NFL Mocks: Chargers Draft LB Courtney Upshaw with 15th Pick

By Ernie Padaon

Last week we saw the guys from NFL Mocks selecting OL David DeCastro and LB Dont’a Hightower in their mock drafts. This week they selected the pass rushing linebacker out of Alabama, Courntey Upshaw:

15. San Diego Chargers (6-7): Courtney Upshaw, OLB, AlabamaThe Chargers continue to try to rectify their pass rush problems with the addition of the talented Upshaw. – NFL Mocks

Since Larry English has not panned out, we will be looking to add a linebacker on the edge that can put pressure on the quarterbacks and can contain the run. Our defense has struggled to put pressure on quarterbacks this year with Shaun Phillips out with injuries. Travis LaBoy is more of a role player and Larry boy has never been able to get off the IR with foot injuries.

Upshaw would be able to add a pass rushing threat on the opposite side of SP95 and he would immediately compete for the starting job. Larry English may have seen his last days with the lightning bolt on his helmet. If we are able to get pressure on the quarterback, it should help out the guys in the secondary tremendously. Antoine Cason and the boys would be getting burned less often.

There may be some character issues to consider before making this selection in the draft. Upshaw was arrested a couple of years ago on a misdemeanor charge of domestic violence/harassment. Do we want to add some of those character issues onto this team? If he plays well on the field, do you really care?
