For the team that shouldn’t be, they sure made a statement on Sunday. The San Diego Chargers defeated the reigning Super Bowl champion Indianapolis Colts 28-24. The experts are no doubt exasperated.

The game was a back-and-forth match of will and desire. Neither side of the ball was letting up.

In the second half disaster struck as Phillip Rivers and LaDainian Tolmlinson went to the sideline due to injury. Enter career backup quarterback Billy Volek. Even when the Bolts looked down and out, they never faltered, never flailed against the favored Colts team. San Diego showed incredible resolve and depth in relying on Volek to lead the team to victory. The Chargers defense stepped up and played big time, playoff-style football to beat the Colts and bring their team to the next level.

The victory will no doubt be short lived as their next opponent is a juggernaut who happens to be really good at not losing.

This AFC Championship Game might just be the most important contest in the history of the Chargers franchise. It eclipses the Super Bowl they played in. Never before have they taken the field against such a fantastic foe.

If they can dislodge the New England Patriots from their throne then the Chargers can forever be a mark on the record of what is one of the best seasons this fair sport has ever seen. Being a footnote is not what the Chargers want ultimately, however. It’s all about the Super Bowl, and the Bolts are now one game away from booking a flight to Arizona. The only thing standing in their way is quite possibly one of the best teams ever. But the Colts were pretty good, too.
