What is 6 foot 5 inches, has 34″ arm length, weighs 306 pounds, and has 9 1/4″ hands?

By now you have already read the title of this article, so SURPRISE!!! It’s Arkansas-Pine Bluff “SWAC” Left Tackle, Terron Armstead!

For those of you who think the Chargers are moving toward the zone blocking scheme, Armstead was an eight time record setting track & field champion, who is incredibly light on his feet! He decided to go to a school that would let him play both football, and track & field. Let’s just say, he is an athlete. He isn’t a top 3 left tackle, but he is a solid 4th. He would be an excellent choice for the San Diego Chargers with their 2nd round pick!

He may be a little undersized, but he could bulk up, and pay big dividends moving forward. He has been effective pulling coast to coast, and has great football intelligence. He can hide offensive screens, draws, and fakes. and isn’t easily fooled by trickery. He has proven himself to be a good pass protector, yet is efficient enough in the run game to break Ryan Mathews to the second level. Judging by the amount of people who have fallen in love with Lane Johnson’s athleticism… picking Armstead could be the next best option… killing two birds, with one stone.

Recent conversations have pointed in different, yet mutual directions. We need a two-headed monster to support our main starters. Philip needs blindside help, and Mathews needs better blocking. Despite playing against weaker competition, Armstead appears to be a blend of both. Even if he isn’t the starting left tackle coming out of preseason, he will definitely compete for a starting role. He can make the competition that much better. This would be a good thing for players like Dunlap, Clary, Harris, and Haslam. I wouldn’t be surprised if he landed the starting job, or at least took over at some point during the season. If the new strength & conditioning staff can put a few extra pounds on him, he could be a good starter for years to come. Possibly even by September / October.

So, Charger fans. Is Armstead the guy to fill this spot? Can the Chargers pick him up in the second round, or will he be gone by the time we pick? Could a trade down for extra picks lock him up earlier than the 45th pick? Or, do you think there are better options? Please post your opinions & analysis below, and remember… the draft is only 12 “nail-biting” days away! We will have our answers soon enough!

Interesting note that the Chargers OL Coach ran him through his Pro Day workout.

Armstead is the speedy offensive tackle at the combine. He is a freak athlete and the Chargers can use any help they can get on the offensive front. The Chargers need to do their research on the kid, since he didn’t face tough competition at Arkansas Pine Bluff. They will have to see if his athleticism will translate to the NFL level.

I just want to know which prospects and free agents will be wearing Chargers uniforms already.

Can you run a 4.65 second 40-yard dash? The shame…

Arkansas-Pine Bluff OL Terron Armstead opened up some eyes this morning at the NFL combine by running a 4.65 second 40. That is unheard of from a 306 pound man. The fastest time for an offensive lineman before Armstead was 4.84 by Allan Barbre. Armstead blew it away.

Armstead will have a few people going over his tape again after his performance at the combine. His competition was weak, but his athleticism can’t be denied. I know there are a few teams out there that need an offensive tackle or two.

Ahem… San Diego Chargers!

Does it really matter how fast an o-lineman runs? Nope. Nobody knows what it means, but it’s provocative. It gets the people going.
