The Defense

Shows you how meaningless stats are, especially since they have no factor in a game. You still have to play the game. The Chargers no.1 Defense gave up 251 rushing yards to the Raiders RBs McFadden and Bush. Though they only had 117 passing yards, the ground and pound was enough to win the game for them. The defensive line had no answer for the Oakland running game and it made them venerable to play action; as we noticed with a fake run up the middle which resulted in a pass from QB Campbell to Louis Murphy for a first down in the red zone. Jason Campbell had more rushing yards with 37 than the core of RBs for the Chargers.

On the biggest shipping day, we will look at the shopping needs of our boys in blue and gold.

• Special Teams

The special teams have been a problem all season long and the last game looked like we had made some improvements. Norv Turner even guaranteed that we have seen the last blocked punt against us. I am not going to say that I don’t trust him, but we’ve seen this unit struggle all season long and it would be nice to have a trustworthy group.

The Chargers quarterback covets wins more than numbers or awards, but those are likely to come if San Diego can play well after the bye.

“I know Vincent has been through a lot and he wanted a deal and didn’t get it,” Antonio Gates said. “But the bottom line is he wants to be a champion. To be around this energy, you can sense the urge of ‘I’m ready to get back on the field.’ I don’t think the contract is going on (in Jackson’s mind), the business side. You get back around it, it’s just natural, you’re ready to get going, ready to play.”
