The Carolina Panthers hired hired Coach Norv Turner’s son, Scott Turner, as the offensive quality control coach.

I had to look up what an offensive quality control coach really was and here is what I found out:

college coaching guys often start their careers as graduate assistants. In the NFL, the entry-level position on coaching staffs is usually as one of the quality control assistants.

At times they are called “offensive assistant” or “defensive assistant,” but the “quality control” portion of the job is at the root of things.

He charts down-and-distance situations, field position, substitutions, etc., and then gives that report to the team’s defensive staff when they begin their game planning each week during the regular season.

The offensive quality control assistant would do the same in regard to opposing defenses and then give the reports to the offensive staff.

Source: Denverpost.com

Anyway, how in the world did the Carolina Panthers end up with the coaching situation that we have been screaming for here in San Diego? Ron Rivera is running the show and “Turner” on offense?

Today, San Diego Charges ex-defensive coordinator, Ron Rivera, agreed to become the new head coach of the Carolina Panthers. Chris Mortenson reports Ron Rivera‘s deal is for 4 years, $11.2 million.

We will now have to keep watch on who from the Chargers he brings over with him. There are rumors that he would bring in Tight Ends Coach, Rob Chudzinski, to coach the Carolina offense. There are also rumors that he would bring over QB Coach, John Ramsdell, as the offensive coordinator.

Rivera has done an excellent job with the Chargers and is well respected amongst the players. Let’s see if he is able to attract any of the Chargers free agent players. Stephen Cooper, Eric Weddle, Kevin Burnett, and Jacques Cesaire are key veterans that become free agents at the end of the season.

Dave Wannstedt has been a hot name that has surfaced to take over the Chargers defensive coordinator position. Head Coach Norv Turner has worked with Wannstedt in Dallas and Miami. Greg Manusky and Rob Ryan are other names that have been mentioned.

The Chargers will also look within their current team to find a replacement for Rivera. They will interview LB Coach John Pagano and DB Coach Steve Wilks.

Pagano would get the support of LB Shaun Phillips:

Congrats to coach Ron for getting a head coaching job he deserves it. I’m hoping coach Pagano gets the coordinator job with us. Good luck – <a href="Congrats to coach Ron for getting a head coaching job he deserves it. I'm hoping coach Pagano gets the coordinator job with us.
