The San Diego Chargers’ offense will have a familiar look Monday night — short-handed.

According to The San Diego Union-Tribune, the Chargers expect to be without rookie running back Ryan Mathews and possibly tight end Antonio Gates and wide receivers Malcom Floyd and Legedu Naanee in their home game against the Denver Broncos.

Philip Rivers is one of the most accomplished players at his position never to have played in a Super Bowl, much less won one. The league’s leading passer is enjoying a potential season for the ages, and the most valuable player award is within his grasp.

When Williams went down with an injury early last season, we saw several players cycle through the position. Notably, 2009 rookie Ogemdi Nwagbuo displayed potential, but the Chargers rushing defense still suffered. However, it can still be said that with 19 tackles and one sack, the five games that Nwagbuo started were more than were expected of the 312 lb. defensive tackle. He just has to beat out the much larger Cam Thomas for the job.

Personally, I can’t wait to see what Thomas can really do at this level. We will probably see both players in that position throughout the season unless one of them emerges as a convincing starter. Whoever that will eventually be has some gigantic shoes to fill.
