The Chargers made another roster move, signing S Tyrone “Chowder” Carter to the team. Carter is in his 11th year and started 12 games last season for the injured Troy Polamalu in Pittsburgh. He is a 2 time super bowl champion and will provide some veteran leadership with the suspension of Steve Gregory.

In order to make room on the roster, the Chargers cut DT Alfonso Boone. Boone was inactive last game and has not recorded a tackle this season. He started 4 games last season. This will give more opportunities for the young players like Ogemdi Nwagbuo, Cam Thomas and Vaughn Martin to see some playing time.

More running back news out of San Diego. The Chargers claimed running back Marcus Mason off waivers from the Washington Redskins. This is wonderful news, because it adds much needed depth to the thinnest section of the roster. Mason has had some exciting moments as well. Even though he has bounced between the Redskins and the Ravens. Then he went to the Jets active roster, but did not get any game time. Then he went back to the Redskins in April of 2009.

Mason is used to competing for a roster spot and that is what he will be doing with the Chargers. This also inspires a competitive scenario for every running back that ends up on the roster in this coming season. Every running back knows that if they end up on the Chargers roster, they will constantly be compared to future hall of fame running back, LaDainian Tomlinson.

That has got to be an enormous amount of pressure. We need somebody who is up to the task. Tomlinson was not just a running back to is. He is a hero to the working people of Southern California. In my opinion, you dont just cut or release a man like that. I would have loved to have seen him finish his days in the NFL as a Charger.

Hell, I am just happy to see the issues of depth at running back and on the defensive line being addressed. Alfonso Boone and Antonio Garay got their contracts, and we know that we will address this in the draft as well.

The pieces are falling into place. Even though the news pours out painfully slowly as this time of year. Every move that gets made has the potential to make or break a season. We need to soak up all of the football we can this season in case the lockout happens. Which is a shame but that’s part of the business side of the game. You can’t have one without the other. All I know is, we are hungry for a Super Bowl run. This town deserves a championship.

It saddens me that L.T. left us without a ring. Bless him for all that he did for this city and the inspiration he provided to so many. Every back that passes through here will be compared to him for decades. That’s just the way it’s going to be.
