Just ran into Roger Goodell & asked him if the NFL finds it important to keep the Chargers in San Diego…says he’ll answer that Fri. – Marty Caswell

What BOMB could Commissioner Goodell drop on us tomorrow? Could this be a Black Friday for the San Diego Chargers? We already received news this Tuesday that the unbuilt Los Angeles Stadium will be called Farmers Field with a $700 million deal.

I don’t have a good feeling on this announcement, but I would think that there would be more buildup on announcing which team(s) would be playing in Los Angeles. So, what could it be?

Maybe, Commissioner Goodell was just in a hurry to do an interview with Inez Sainz and totally dismissed Marty’s question and just went with the automatic response of “I will answer that Friday”.

I guess we will have to check in on the press conference to see what he has to say.

AEG and Farmers Insurance signed a $700 million, 30-year deal for the naming-rights to the unbuilt Los Angeles Stadium. The stadium would be called “Farmers Field”.

No announcement for an NFL team has been named yet and there have not been site approvals YET. The San Diego Chargers, Minnesota Vikings, Jacksonville Jaguars, St. Louis Rams and Oakland Raiders are all teams that have been mentioned to make the move to Los Angeles.

I feel that the Chargers are at the top of the list. The city of San Diego has done nothing to build the Chargers a new stadium for the last few years and the Chargers already have been creating a following in the Los Angeles market. Since San Diego is doing nothing, then why not move to a city that will get a new stadium and will also bring a huge market that is hungry to have an NFL team.

Philip Anschutz announced a plan for a new NFL stadium in downtown Los Angeles this week with the caveat that an NFL team must commit to move to Los Angeles by the end of March 2011.

Could Fabiani be lying about the situation? MAYBE… but at least this gives me some temporary relief. Especially with it coupled with the news that the Spanos family is no longer seeking a buyer for the team. It also could mean that we don’t commit till after March 2011, BUT I will just keep my optimism for now.

San Diego still needs to build a stadium and there are a lot of hurdles that need to be cleared with that. We can all get pissed at AEG, Los Angeles, and Dean Spanos or whoever, but the city of San Diego needs to step up to keep this team!
