King Dunlap was named a team captain this year. He re-signed with the team in the offseason and has been a solid left tackle for the team to protect Philip’s backside. When he first was signed by the Chargers a couple of seasons ago, fans were wondering if he would provide anything to the team. He didn’t have a role on the roster and Max Starks was signed on the roster to give him competition. Dunlap had spent his first few years in the league with the Philadelphia Eagles and he struggled on the line. A change of scenery to San Diego has brought out the best in him and he is now looked up to by the rest of his teammates.

Antonio Gates is a player that likely could have taken the offensive captain role with the team, but his 4 game suspension for PED use has to be a reason on why he didn’t get selected for that role. Malcom Floyd is another player that could have been a good team captain for the roster entering his last season. Instead the team went with Dunlap as the team captain. Dunlap deserves the honor. He has worked hard and has been the best offensive lineman on the team.

Corey Liuget was also selected to be a team captain this year for the defensive side of the ball and it will be his first time with that honor. Liuget recently signed a contract extension and will get the opportunity to be a team captain for a long time. He has been the best defensive lineman on the roster for a number of years and now gets a chance to be the defensive captain alongside of Eric Weddle.

There is a shift coming on the roster and you can start to see it with the captains. Eric Weddle might not be part of this group next season. Philip Rivers will be the veteran of the group and he then will be standing with the new wave of talent on the roster.
