Laken Tomlinson would be a nice fit for San Diego Chargers

The San Diego Chargers need an upgrade on the offensive line and Laken Tomlinson could be a draft selection that would produce up front.

The San Diego Chargers could find an instant impact player for their offensive line if they are ready to add a guard in the 2nd round. There are a number of top guards that should be available for the Chargers to bring in during that round. Whoever is brought in would push Johnnie Troutman to the bench and would immediately become the starter with the Chargers.

One of the top prospects at the position is Duke G Laken Tomlinson. Imagine having another LT to cheer for in a San Diego Chargers uniform? Sounds pretty good to me. This would be a different type of player though.

Tomlinson would be a huge upgrade on the right side of the offensive line. We wouldn’t have D.J. Fluker moving inside to the guard spot like some had projected, but he should be able to hold his own at right tackle. He still will have his struggles against the speed rush, but he will do much better with more talent lined up next to him.

Tomlinson is a thick guard that could give the team production immediately on the right side of the line. The priority this offseason has been to make upgrades on the offensive line for Philip Rivers, so the team re-signed King Dunlap and also brought in Orlando Franklin in free agency to take over one guard spot. Adding another talented guard onto the roster could give this team the talent that is needed up front to allow Philip Rivers to do work in the passing game.

Adding Tomlinson would also give the team an immediate upgrade for the run game. Branden Oliver and Danny Woodhead would love seeing the big man maul people in front of them. I am sure that the Chargers will find some other back in the draft to add onto the roster as well. The Chargers could rely on the running game more this season with the upgraded offensive line. Last season, the team struggled to run the ball with the guys up front failing to create any space. Hopefully the new group will be able to create some running lanes.

Tomlinson is rated the 2nd best guard in the draft and is expected to be available in the 2nd round of the draft. There are other talented guards in the draft that could be available with the Chargers selection as well. Depending on what the Chargers do with the first round, those guards will be on the radar for the Chargers when they make their selection. Tomlinson would be a solid addition and would help this team tremendously. He fits the type of player that Tom Telesco loves.
