Eddie Royal should not be a priority to re-sign

Eddie Royal is a free agent, but the team won’t need to make him a priority to re-sign.

Do the San Diego Chargers need to re-sign Eddie Royal this offseason? If he wants to take a friendly contract, then it would be a nice signing, but it doesn’t seem to be a deal that the team needs to make. The team needs to focus on other issues on the roster.

Royal is a solid slot receiver. He did well in his time on the field and was a threat in the red zone, but the team has other pressing needs that they should look to fill with their free money. They should look for some players that they can put in the trenches. They need some players that can block for Philip Rivers and they need to find other players to chase other quarterbacks. That is where the money needs to be spent first. King Dunlap will be the biggest priority in free agency to re-sign and then Brandon Flowers will be the next player that the team needs to re-sign.

Last season, Royal finished the year with 778 yards and 7 touchdowns. Those are solid numbers for a slot receiver, but the team will have to find production somewhere else. The first place that the team can look is at their own roster. They used Dontrelle Inman briefly last season, but in his limited amount of action he showed that he can produce. He showed some good hands during his stint on the field. In his 2 games last season, he finished with 12 catches for 158 yards.

The Chargers could also look at their practice squad for some help at the position. Javontee Herndon almost made the squad out of training camp. He could be a nice player to add onto the roster. Austin Pettis was signed in the offseason to the practice squad and he could be a solid player to use on offense.

If the Chargers are uncomfortable with any of those options, they could always look at the draft to find some talent. There should be some solid players to choose from in the middle of the draft. They could look at the speedster out of Miami Phillip Dorsett to add onto the roster. He would have that game breaking speed that we have been looking for and could be a solid threat in the slot. There are plenty of other options the team could have interest in as well.

The Chargers have options. Eddie Royal doesn’t have to be a priority for the team. We will see what way the team leans though.
