Free Agency is almost upon us my friends. It’s that time of year again, everyone is throwing out there wish lists and hoping that their favorite team picks up the best talent available. It is no different for us Charger fans, we can use all the help we can get, it will only make us better.

The free agency market in 2015 is loaded with talent all over the place, and I’m sure that Telesco is going to make one or two big signings. The Chargers have glaring holes all over the place, the offensive line, the defensive line, runningback — and even cornerback and wide receiver as well — depending on how many players we end up releasing soon. I’m going to take the focus off of these positions and look at another area the Bolts should address — the safety position.

The safety position has been a strong point and a weak point for the Bolts all season long. Eric Weddle is an amazing safety and he is most definitely feared by opposing offenses, but who do we have next to him? Marcus Gilchrist is an OK player and Jahleel Addae isn’t really a starter, he is more of a change of pace type of player for certain packages.

It just so happens that New England Patriots Safety Devin McCourty is set to hit the free agent market this offseason. The dude has tons of talent and he is only 27 years old. Since he was drafted by the Patriots in 2009, Devin has racked up 17 interceptions and 7 forced fumbles to go with that. Plus, the kid has 2 Pro Bowls under his belt. For a guy coming off his rookie contract, those are some really good numbers.

Just imagine our secondary with McCourty in it. We will have Eric Weddle, Flowers, Verrett and McCourty. Those 4 names alone just sound super nasty and should strike fear into the hearts of oppposing offenses.

Here is a little known fact about Devin McCourty as well, he played as cornerback throughout college. He was switched to safety when the Pats drafted him in 2009. So the guy has talent, is young AND he is versatile. I’m sure with we would be able to come up with a cool defensive package with Devin in at corner since Pagano likes exotic defensive plays.

Devin won’t come cheap no doubt, keep in mind, we have some money to spend this offseason. I would imagine that Telesco is willing to make at least one or two big signing in free agency this year and I would be more than happy to make McCourty one of those guys. It just makes sense.

Alright Bolt fans, what are your thoughts on the Chargers signing Devin McCourty? Sure he’s not an o-line man or a reliable runningback, but think outside the box for a bit. Feel free to join the conversation below and drop a comment with your opinion! Bolt up everyone!
