The pursuit of Brandon Flowers

Brandon Flowers has a lot of San Diego Chargers fans buzzing over the possibilities. He hasn’t even been signed to the roster YET.

There is a lot to takeaway in the team’s pursuit of Brandon Flowers.

Tom Telesco is not afraid to go after players with a big name. Flowers isn’t the biggest name, but he did head to the Pro Bowl last season and signed a hefty contract with the Kansas City Chiefs for his performance in the past. He is wanted by a few teams out there and we are one of the mentioned. We had been mentioned to be in pursuit of other big names as well in the past.

Tom Telesco is always looking for players to improve the roster. Last season he brought in Dwight Freeney late in the offseason. We also added Sean Lissemore right before the season opened up. This season we are looking to bring in Brandon Flowers. We already brought in a few corners this offseason, but Tom doesn’t want to stop adding talent.

We are ready to win now. If we were looking toward the future of the team, we would take the bumps and bruises with Jason Verrett and Steve Williams getting a buttload of reps in the secondary. Instead, we are looking to add veteran talent onto the roster to help ease the youngsters into the game. We want to hang with the big boys. We an be mentioned with the rest of those teams.

This reminds me of the McKinney situation from last off season…..

    • CALiFORNiAkiD

Former Chiefs CB Brandon Flowers will visit at least one other team, source says. Before making decision, Time with Chargers went well. – Gehlken

Brandon Flowers has a picture of Chuckie on his twitter holding a knife.
That pretty much says it all. Lol, We made a pretty big cut…I feel confidant.

      • RZ

As long as he doesn’t post a pic of Godzilla holding a Samurai sword after his next team visit. Lol!

  • shane

Flowers vs Wright last year: Shareece Wright allowed 774 yards & nine TD in 2013. Brandon Flowers allowed 778 yards & 8 TD. Both on 52 receptions on 89 throws their way.

do we really want to break the bank on a dude that’s same as wrights overall mediocre production last year???

    • Marcel West-Bailey

Flowers was not in the position that he could succeed. Bob Sutton screwed this guy over putting him inside making him play press when he’s used to playing outside and off. You can’t expect a player to do well in a system if that isn’t his strength.

    • philiprules

Please, let’s not let facts and figures get in the way of the latest ooh shiny.

    • Derek

KC recently switched to a press man heavy scheme (small cb’s kryptonite) wasn’t long ago that flowers and Carr were top corners in a zone scheme. So it’s likely he would be better here. Being foolish would be bringing Chris Houston in tmrw who often looks like he’s guessing instead of reading and reacting

    • arnie

Like Marcel an Derek brought up, context.
Wright was in his first year as a starter, and progressed as the season went it. It showed in the last four game and in the playoffs. They switched defensive schemes and set up flowers to fail in the slot.
Numbers are great, the truth is something we have to dig a little deeper for.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Let’s be serious… TT will not overpay. But, I don’t care WHAT those stats say, I would take Flowers over Wright any day of the week.. night and day. We have all read that stat line on Bleacher Report too. Wright will never sniff a pro bowl.. I don’t even think he’s as serviceable as Jammer.. who was barely average.

      • CALiFORNiAkiD

        lol

  • Corby

BF left San Diego without a deal. He wants to play for a better team than KC was and SD isn’t any better.

    • Gunnar Martin

      ^^^Joke of the day everybody.

      • Corby

        Not a joke, reality.

        • http://www.standupforkids.org blackroseMD1

Which is why SD beat KC twice last year, and went further in the playoffs?

          • Corby

That’s why SD almost lost to KC’s second string. If it wasn’t for a missed field goal SD would not have even made the playoffs. Also, SD played CIN in the playoffs… A team that hasn’t won a playoff game since 1990. That is over 30 years without a single playoff victory. But hey, if you think SD is marginally better than KC, good for you! Now that’s something to brag about SD fans!

          • Gunnar Martin

Actually, being better than you guys isn’t much to brag about. But we’ll take it.

          • Corby

Not a KC fan… but If I was a Chargers fan, I would take what I could get too!

          • jcrisp

How did the chiefs fare against broncos and other playoff teams?

          • Corby

Despite the fact that the Chargers finally hired a new head coach and GM last year, the team’s deepest problems remain exactly the same. They play in a shit stadium. They are constantly on the verge of skipping town. They have a rapidly-aging QB who is one season away from the Carson Palmer tier of washed-up journeymen.

          • RZ

You can go back to your favorite Jacksonville team thread now ma’am. Enjoy

          • http://www.standupforkids.org blackroseMD1

You say you aren’t a Chiefs fan, but so far have neglected to mention who your team is. Are you embarrassed of them? Come on…it’s ok to admit that you’re a Raiders fan. Yes, it’s embarrassing, but you’ll live.

          • Stefanie Smith

He’s younger than Brady and Manning and Brees. So get over yourself. And don’t speak about the Eli Manning trade. You have no clue how that occurred.

          • Adam

Yes!!! He doesn’t have the right, or even the ability to speak of it! I’m glad someone said it!

          • arnie

And still, nothing you said makes sense…..

          • Gunnar Martin

Actually, you are a Chiefs fan. A quick look at your profile shows that you’ve only commented to support Kansas City or put down the Chargers (loser). Oh I guess that’s not the only thing- you called someone an idiot on an article about a giant shark at a gas station. Didn’t even use the right *you’re* when degrading someone else’s intelligence.

            Feel clever now?

          • Corby

Not a Chiefs fan… Go Patriots!

Did you think for a second this might be a shared computer? But hey, thanks for checking out the profile. It feels good to have fans out there.

          • Hunter

but the question remains: why the hell are you trolling a Chargers fan site?

          • CALiFORNiAkiD

Why are we even bothering with this clown.

          • Corby

Just to bring you pathetic fans back to earth who think signing a veteran undersized cornerback entering his SEVENTH season in the league is going to magically turn your team in to a legitimate contender. Now that’s the joke of the day!

          • chargersfanfromswitzerland

well, dont care about the past, looking forward to see the chargers beat the chiefs again and again and again and again and again… stay tuned!! :)

          • shane

2014-1990….not quite 30 years, doesn’t even round up. go home loser.

          • Corby

Oh thanks good catch guys! 24 years not 30 dang my bad… My point is still the same though.

          • GT

Hey Corby, what about when we beat KC’s first string at arrowhead? And BTW, 1990 was 24 years ago, not 30.

          • Corby

Sorry about the wait, I had to look up that game. Looks like Chargers won 41-38 on the final play of the game. KC lead most of the game and played without their starting RG, RT, LOLB, and ROLB (Both pro bowlers) SOOO… Like I said Marginally better, maybe?

          • Gunnar Martin

Excuses much? If you’re going that route, San Diego was technically missing their No. 1 receiver (Floyd), first and second best pass rushers (Ingram and Freeney), special teams captain and safety (Stuckey), bell-cow RB in the second half (Mathews), second best active receiver in the fourth quarter (Royal, whose absence forced Ajirotutu, a special teams reserve, into being forced onto the field and eventually catching the game winner), and our starting RT and DE late in the final quarter (Fluker and Luiget).

Did I forget anyone? I’m not a believer in making the excuse that a team should have won if a couple of their players got hurt (a TEAM consists of depth, not just starters), just showing you both sides of the argument.

          • Corby

And I’m just showing you the marginal difference that may or may not separate the Chargers and Chiefs…

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

it doesnt matter if you win by an inch or a mile… you lost both games bro

          • arnie

            BOOM ( drops the mike….)

          • Corby

            Oh Boy!

          • Corby

          • CALiFORNiAkiD

We’re 5-1 last 3 years vs the Chiefs

And have won 4 consecutive games.

          • Nick Mansoor

Fast and Furious quote haha I love it Ernie.

          • http://www.standupforkids.org blackroseMD1

“Almost” is the operative word there. We beat your team twice, and now you’re in here trying to say your team is better when the scoreboard said they aren’t.

          • Diegoblue

You LOST TWICE I don’t care who was on the field ..

          • Corby

Chargers have always been losers. They traded away Eli Manning for Phillip Cry me a Rivers… Had Drew Brees and let him go… Chose Ryan Leaf over Peyton Manning.

How many super bowls do you guys have? Let me help you out ZERO! Combined these three quarterbacks have… wait for it… 4 Super Bowls and 6 Super Bowl appearances. Is it bad luck to be a Chargers fan? Maybe, things will start to swing in the other direction when the team moves out of San Diego.

          • Diegoblue

How many Super Bowls do you bums have ??? And I’m not talking about when the NFL and AFL was split.. Rivers is better than any QB you had since Montana.. Andy Reid ain’t winning nothing over there.. Did you bums even beat a playoff team last year ??? Just 1 I believe .. GTFO.. Fn chief fans .. Lmao

          • shane

**ryan leaf was picked 2nd, peyton 1st. Brees had HUGE questions about the longevity of his shoulder when the chargers let him go. wasn’t a highly sought after free agent as you may think. You aren’t very smart. sorry.

          • Stefanie Smith

We beat KC in KC. Was that KC’s second string?

          • Steven White

Joe Montana led KY to their last playoff win 20 years ago buddy. So KY ranks right up there with Cincy in my book! Losers

          • Steven White

KY was auto correct but kinda fitting hahaha

        • Stefanie Smith

Even at our worst, we never played as bad as KC. What did they win prior to Smith and Coach Reid joining KC? 2 wins?

        • powderBLUE801

Go troll on your own page puke bucket.

    • tonyloc1970 .

In your opinion there not. In mine the Chargers are. I know we can go back and forth all day to justify our stance, but I’ll let this year play out and answer your question that way. Bolt up!

  • Steve Diaz

So do we still have a chance to getting him?

    • Marcel West-Bailey

Not if history follows suit. Once they leave they usually aren’t coming back.

      • Gunnar Martin

Not necessarily. Besides, is there another team out there that wants him as much as the Chargers do that can put him in a better situation than the Chargers can? I think the only other team contending for his services right now that made the playoffs last year (besides us) is New England, and they’re not even THAT interested in him. I’m still liking our chances with Flowers.

        • Marcel West-Bailey

Yeah I agree just that once a player leaves they “usually” don’t come back. I know Detroit needs a corner and they may be able to pay him more.

        • Steve Diaz

thanks. I was up all night a day ago wondering if we would sign him, and thought about all the defensive schemes we could use him in. That would be soooooo nice to have Flowers, Wright, Verret, AND Steve Williams…plus Brandon Ghee and Marshall as depth. We would have a mixture of height and speed. How many CBs do we usually carry?

          • Gunnar Martin

Usually we keep quite a few (like five or six) on the roster, with another couple on the practice squad. You also have to account for guys that are versatile, like if they can play both corner and safety (i.e. Gilchrist). They essentially take up two spots on the depth chart at the cost of one roster spot, which is always handy to have.

My guess is, assuming we land Flowers, we carry him, Wright, Verrett, Williams, and Marshall on the active roster along with Gilchrist, who will be labeled as a safety but will probably end up playing most of his snaps at nickel corner. I don’t really think Ghee will be able to survive that kind of competition, and I don’t know if he’s eligible or not for the practice squad. I do really like the prospect of Chris Davis making it onto the PS though.

Anyway, adding Flowers will make it a lot more complicated, but that’s absolutely a problem we want to have.

    • Derek

My guess is like b makinne of the dolphins he used us to set the bar for his other visits. I know Houston is a yr away from having to make big cap cuts. I forget who else would be interested. 49ers panthers. It would be sweet though

      • http://www.standupforkids.org blackroseMD1

Freeney left without a contract last year too, and then signed a few days later.

        • Derek

True but he wasn’t too happy about the offers he was getting. The only thing on our side is he’s short. But he’s still a db in the pass happy nfl.

  • Mark G

I am hoping to hear of Flowers putting on the Bolt, but if he expects to be treated special and doesn’t have the “team chemistry” that TT and our coaches look for, I’m okay with his talent and problems going elsewhere. We are already in a better position to win more games than last year, despite what idiots like Gil Brandt says.

  • Edward Sherman

it would just suck if we didn’t sighn him cause to dangle him to us fans just to show you tryed would suck not saying they would do that just not known for sighning big names in their prime.

  • 21serg

Keep in my mind he said he’s going to visit another team and then make his decision the one advantage San diego has on that team is the weather and the lifestyle but that’s just how I determine it I really think we have a good chance to sign him in a day or 2

    • Nick Viebrock

Another huge advantage is working with eric weddle

  • Nick Mansoor

I have a feeling Flowers is testing us on this one, he wants to check in with another team to see if they can outbid us. All we can do is hope they low ball him, I am confident that we have the advantage in sealing this deal. But first we need to see who he visits next

  • Gunnar Martin

So we just signed this dude…

    • Gunnar Martin
      • Padraigh Keogh

Think we released Taylor so we could sign him. How many DT do we need? Have 6 on roster now.

        • Gunnar Martin

Well Lissemore, Carrethers, Geathers, the Mowin Samoan from Utah, the guy with the weird name from a foreign country/Boise State… I think that’s it. If TT cut Taylor to make room for this guy, I will be severely disappointed :/

  • Travis

We all know the Pro Bowl is a joke. Flowers is massively overrated and overpaid. His -9.8 coverage grade was worst on KC and 96th out of 110 graded CBs. Wright and our young guys have higher ceilings. Let us not waste our time and cap space. https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2014/03/07/2014-team-needs-kansas-city-chiefs-2ow

    • Stefanie Smith

You should take a look at what he actually got paid at overthecap.com. in 2013. His base pay was around $3.3 million. He did get a bonus at the beginning of his deal, a portion of which hits their cap each year. So, he is hardly overpaid. Then, as to his struggles. Chiefs changed defensive schemes. For years, they play zone coverage. Now they play press. They put Flowers in a position playing press where he would not do well.. Neither would Verrett or any of our short CBs. So, we have a zone coverage scheme. That suits Flowers better and would put him in a position to succeed.

Last thing: If you think our guys Steve Williams and Verrett are ready to compete at the NFL level, with no vet help and coming off injuries, then I guess that is your opinion. Flowers could give our young guys a chance to heal more and get up to speed.

Verrett and Williams wouldn’t play so hot either in a press man coverage type scheme either.

As to press man coverage: This is what I do not like about the old timer coaches and co-ordinators. They will not budge from their scheme nor adapt to what is going on in the league. Many teams are changing over to press and Pagano does not adapt.

      • Gunnar Martin

        Preach Stef!

      • Travis

Yes, Flowers was a top 10 corner in the zone scheme, but was horrendous in man. He was the 6th highest paid CB in the NFL last year. Bottom line is we do not have the cap space. “His weighty $5.25 million salary for 2014 dimmed the prospects of being shopped, but Flowers’ looming $2 million training camp bonus made this a clear-cut decision for general manager John Dorsey.” http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap2000000358463/article/brandon-flowers-released-by-kansas-city-chiefs. We have just under 2.6 mil in cap space. http://overthecap.com/teamcap.php?Team=Chargers&Year=2014
We did not have a decent pass rush last year which added more pressure on our young DBs. I think this year will be different. With added depth at OLB, a healthy Freeney and Ingram and a solid NT rotation our secondary will be more consistent and have more opportunities to make plays. Both Verrett and Williams showed great flexibility in both press man and zone coverages in college. Watch the tape. “TCU asked a lot of their cornerbacks, asking them to switch often between press, off-man and zone coverage schemes. Verrett appears comfortable in each, demonstrating a quick back-pedal, smooth turning motion and remarkable closing speed.” http://mweb.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/nfl-draft-scout/24057839/top-prospect-of-week-six-tcu-cb-jason-verrett. Pagano uses an off-ball, man/zone switch scheme most of the time. So on the majority of plays, the CBs are on a seven-by-one alignment (The corners line up seven yards off, one yard inside their respective WRs). We use this scheme to confuse opposing offenses on whether the defense is in man or zone coverage. Our CBs have to play both press man and zone. I think Verrett and Williams are perfect fits for this scheme, Flowers is not. They both have looked well beyond their years this off-season according to Weddle, Royal and other vets on the team. Marshall with a full off-season under Pagano’s system will be better as well. With that said, I wouldn’t mind Flowers at a decent price but I would not overpay for him. Would you suggest we cut Clary?

        • Stefanie Smith

I think Clary needs a pay restructure. If we want to get in a discussion about overpaid, Clary would make a great topic. The guys seem to think he contributes something. Great. But he could take a pay decrease or a pay restructure. Most fans think Clary should hit the road. I believe if Clary were to hit the road, he wouldn’t be getting top dollar. But maybe I am wrong.

Yeah, and I agree with you, Flowers at a decent price would be good. We don’t have to blow a whole bunch of money. If he produces and really kills it, then maybe TT can write in a bonus of some sort.

  • NateLew

The fact he left after two days without signing isn’t a good look. At least he’s yet to visit anyone else so far. We better grab him because he’s going to Pittsburgh or New England otherwise.

    • CALiFORNiAkiD

      Not Pittsburgh or Minnesota.

And with New England already having Revis and Browner it’s highly unlikely for him to play the slot again.

We run the perfect system to maximize his skill set.

      • NateLew

That’s true about the Pats, and I didn’t mention the Vikings because he said he doesn’t wanna play their himself. But the Steelers could be willing to start him over Ike Taylor. Detroit also just cut Houston and need someone.

        • CALiFORNiAkiD

Pittsburgh has interest but he doesn’t want to take a visit there.

Lions only cut Houston to sign Ebron. They have no cap space.

          I like our chances.

          • NateLew

Damn. You got the scoop on this shit. Sounds good to me brotha!

          • CALiFORNiAkiD

            Haha

          • Gunnar Martin

Where did you hear the Steelers are out? The people demand sources!

      • Stefanie Smith

I heard/read somewhere that the Ravens were showing some interest. Man, I hope he fits here and gets signed.

  • Stefanie Smith

Geez, I almost wish we didn’t hear or read about it. I get all worked up and then there is a let down. Hope the guy comes on board. Most importantly, if he comes here, hope he WANTS to be here and fits in.

  • seamill guesthouse

Please, just field a defensive team that can actually get off the field on after 3rd downs.
