Brandon Taylor waived by San Diego Chargers

S Brandon Taylor has been released by the San Diego Chargers today, via Chargers.com. He didn’t get much of an opportunity to get on the field with the team after being hampered with injury after injury. He was drafted in the third round a few seasons ago out of LSU and was expected to be our starting safety to fill the spot next to Eric Weddle, but things just didn’t work out the way we had planned.

Taylor got his first chance to start in his rookie season and suffered a season-ending injury during that game. He never was able to make it back on the field for the Chargers after that injury. .

It  looked like he was going to make a return last year during the preseason, but he suffered a setback and could not last till the regular season. .

The Chargers will have Marcus Gilchrist and Jahleel Addae battle out for the starting safety job next to Eric Weddle. Taylor could have been part of that mix, but he just did not work out. Addae seems to be the front runner to win that starting job.

It seems that there is a spot open in our secondary now….. Brandon Flowers?

I did not see that coming… Wowwww. Making room for another defensive back…. Hummmmm

  • DJChrisLEE

interesting what could this mean? HMMMMM

  • CALiFORNiAkiD

    Good news.

Wish Brandon Taylor good luck. Hope he starts somewhere else.

    • CALiFORNiAkiD

Crezdon Butler, Larry English, Jonas Mouton.

Time to remove the dead weight.

  • Nick619chargers4life

I didn’t see him getting cut but I did see him riding the bench , looks like that fat trimming has begun for Flowers.

  • Nick619chargers4life

    Thanks AJ Smith .

  • Brett M

Wouldn’t he have been worth something to someone being that he was still on rookie contract? Even a 7th rounder?

    • Nick619chargers4life

All he has right now is college tape . Maybe a seventh but who knows. I doubt it .

  • vct

I heard we signed flowers to a three year deal 12m

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      where did you hear that?

      • vct

I heard it from talking to people, no official sources. But it is possible if he’s staying overnight to finalize the contract terms.

    • Nick619chargers4life

      Where when who how ?

    • Joel Ayala

Come vct dont leave us hanging like that!! Lol

    • jamfed

NO WAY! I would expect a lot more, but that’s where I’d start contract negotiations

    • Gunnar Martin

      SOURCES!!!

  • shane

bummer, i like b taylor…hate to see a guy get cut due to injury

  • Trey P

Never the one to say i told ya lol

    • Nick619chargers4life

Ok then I will say it , lol I told y’all so lol

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I was wrong… surprises the heck out of me. We couldn’t be any thinner at the safety position, quite honestly. Now we are down right anemic.

        • Nick619chargers4life

I feel you. But what makes me wonder is another UDFA SS is still on the roster in Darby. Was Taylor really that bad for him to be the first to go or were they just tired of waiting on him . I hope he finds success somewhere . In the mean time Gilly Darby Addae and Stuckey. It’s not so bad ya think ?

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Well.. I don’t know anything about two of these guys (Darby / Phillips). Addae is decent. Gilly blows at safety… Stuckey is auight, I guess. So…. pretty bad, in my opinion. The rest of the backfield is slowly getting better tho.. just gotta be patient.

          • Nick619chargers4life

True that ! You know me, I been high on Addae since we signed him , I really hope he can stay healthy as well .

        • Nick619chargers4life

I forgot one, also we have a Adrian Phillips S

          • arnie

The safety position IS Weddle, then it’s whoever plays next to him. What it comes down to is making room for some new rookies to make an impression, an for Stuckey to move up the depth chart. At this point production is everything, and I guess TT felt comfortable enough, they could move on with Addae an Stuckey

  • tonyloc1970 .

Ok, now I am getting excited about the possiblity of Flowers actually coming on board. FINGERS CROSSED.

  • arnie

Wow. It really is step up or step off time in Chargers Park.

    • Nick619chargers4life

      I like it !

      • arnie

You an me both, this is not aj n norvs team anymore. Time to produce…..

  • Nick Mansoor

Out with the old Brandon….. In with the new Brandon.

That’s basically what this move means

    • arnie

If the TT is making play for flowers, thIs means he is competing to win the AFC West.

      • Nick Mansoor

Nice to see some sense of urgency for our defense from TT

        • arnie

          Agreed.

      • Stefanie Smith

Agreed, arnie. I would feel good about this because he is not thinking major multi-year rebuild. He is giving us a shot. Yeah, it could backfire, but he is trying. Yes, it indicates he is not packing it in and he and the Chargers are competing to win the AFC West. That makes me happy for sure.

        • arnie

At the end of the day if T&M aren’t pleased with what they have, they are going to make moves. This re-affirms it’s not “lip service”

          • Stefanie Smith

Yes. I agree. Makes me feel like they are actually making a go of it now–not in 5 years.

  • jamfed

Cutting a player just before you add a player????
Didn’t this happen a few month ago?

  • RZ

I have a funny feeling that someone else is right behind him…hmmmm.

    • arnie

      crezden butler?

      • Nick619chargers4life

Dare I say I hope all of them lol would that be wrong of me ? I like Butler though.

        • arnie

Lol butler is okay. But he has become expendable with Verrett, Ghee, an possibly Williams as depth. Marshal may be on his way out, if Flowers becomes a Charger.

          • Gunnar Martin

From what Gehlken and Acee have been putting out there, it sounds like Marshall has gotten a lot better since last season. I’m not the biggest fan of his, but I’m curious to see if there’s any truth to it.

          • arnie

He basically stopped the bleeding wound cox left, with less time to prepare. His experience on the field helped Weddle, mostly, to drop into coverage, because marshal didn’t get burned like cox did. Which means he needed less help.
Marshal probably isn’t a top 10 or 20 CB in the league, but after 8 to 9 seasons he’s doing something right.

      • RZ

        Shit all of the above…

        • arnie

HA! they may be the first string cuts.

  • http://www.standupforkids.org blackroseMD1

Man, that sucks. I had high hopes for Taylor. Hopefully he gets healthy and catches on elsewhere.

    • arnie

He may be back. Remember TT is always turning over the roster and should injury occur Taylor could be re-signed to special teams.

      • tubbs45

        good point

      • Trey P

Man hes not coming back give it up lol

        • arnie

Really? Like we all knew Flowers was coming for a visit? It wouldn’t be the first time TT reached out to a player they released…

          • Alter Ego

Arnie your right – never say never…unless you are Jared Gaither – then its hell no

  • Morgan Josepher

does that free up any $$?

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Probably not much.. but some, I would think.

    • jamfed

      Probably a half a million

  • Daboltz

I like how TT is changing the culture on this team..level of competition moved up couple if indeed Flowers is here.

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Of all the pplayers we could have cut… Taylor? Hope Addae doesn’t get hurt.

    • Gunnar Martin

I was thinking the same thing. There’s so many other guys I would have let go before him. At least we know Taylor has potential, unlike a few of the other scrubs currently on the roster. However, I guess we aren’t the ones watching them practice every day…

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

        Agreed.

    • philiprules

Only thing I can think of is after the mini camp they just decided his knee is just not there.

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Yeah.. you might be right… tough break for the kid. Plus, he was an AJ pick who hasn’t worked out. TT May not have be high on him to begin with. If we get Flowers in exchange, I’m good with it, I suppose.

  • Morgan Josepher

Just looked it up, should free up about $660k

  • esco charger

If/when Brandon flowers is signed does that also mean the end of gilchrist we already have depth at CB or do we keep gilchrist for depth

    • Nick619chargers4life

Probably going to keep him as CB and SS depth .

      • esco charger

I doubt for corner maybe more SS we are stacked at CB if we sign flowers with wright Marshall Williams verrett ghee butler gilchrist can’t wait til camp

        • Nick619chargers4life

You know how TT likes his versatility. And camp couldn’t get here fast enough ! It’s driving me nuts .

          • esco charger

Versatility is good to have I think that’s why clary hasnt got cut yet but we can make cap room by cutting a couple of players

          • Nick619chargers4life

            Oh yeah !!!

    • jamfed

I think Taylor being cut insures more playing time for Gilly

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

keep gilchrist because he can play safety

  • Edward Sherman

Flowers stayed the night in SD visiting coaches again this truly great sighn.

  • Padraigh Keogh

Cut Clary now… come on. Taylor was good for depth.

    • Nick619chargers4life

      Please say it again lol

      • Padraigh Keogh

        Cut Clary now… ;-) lol

  • Marcel West-Bailey

Damn. I always wanted to see him play. Well if this is the first step to getting Flowers I am down. Ghilchrist, Darby, Addae, Weddle, and whoever else is on the roster can handle it

    • Gunnar Martin

Same here. I’m saddened by his release, but I’ll be okay with it if we land a Pro Bowl corner.

  • 619rockstar

Dang everybody hating on clary, I love it , lol

    • Nick619chargers4life

I think he is overpaid . I wouldn’t mind him staying but not at his price .

    • arnie

LOL not I. He’s just playing out the contract aj smith gave him. His value to the team is worth the money, for now. until someone on the roster can prove they are a better an more affordable option at the position, he’s staying put. Only T&M can decide this.

  • RZ

I’m getting anxiety attacks just thinking about whether Flowers signs or flys away today…smh.

  • rickochey

we do have another veteran DB from ????? I cant remember his name …

  • Jose Aguilar

Best wishes to Taylor! Just another chapter of those dreaded injuries we so seem to be unlucky with! Let’s wipe the tear away and move on. FYI, any opinions on the other Safety we signed from Texas???

  • Alter Ego

Taylor got cut because the competition on the team is better. He showed a lot of promise coming out of LSU but with only four games played in two years – promise becomes a dirty word.We save about $650,000 in cap space with the move.

    • Nick619chargers4life

IMO I think a team could make anybody look really good. LSU was solid as a whole, I think LSU made him look better then he was. Take some of those players of his D at LSU and he might as well been a late round draft pick . IMO

  • philiprules

Too bad for Taylor that the knee failed him. Thought he was pretty impressive at LSU. But, there’s a reason why the career expectancy of the average NFL player is so short.
Now I guess we’ll see if Flowers wants to come here or if it’s to be a bidding war with multiple teams. Here’s hoping he wants to stick it to the team that dumped him by guaranteeing he’ll get to see them twice a year.

  • powderBLUE801

This is getting interesting!! I know that move is not enough to bring Flowers in so what or who is next??

  • Nick619chargers4life

And Elvis has left the building !!

  • Nick Mansoor

Anyone have any updates on this situation? I’m too excited.

    • RZ

Flowers supposedly left town today…no word on any signed contract….yet.

      • Nick Mansoor

Shiiiiiiiit, well that was a total buzz kill

        • RZ

          ya feel me?!

  • Stefanie Smith

I get a kick out of it when goofy fans think Steve Williams is a vet with over a year experience in the NFL. lol

    • Gunnar Martin

Really can’t wait to see what he can do in some real action this year. I get the feeling he’s gonna be a special player for us.
