Brandon Flowers in town to visit San Diego Chargers

The San Diego Chargers have brought in former Kansas City Chiefs CB Brandon Flowers into town for a visit per Ian Rapoport. Flowers was making $10 million per season with the Chiefs and was a member of the Pro Bowl last season, but the Chiefs were moving in a different direction.

Flowers has a lot of interest around the league and it would likely cost a pretty penny in order to sign him to a deal. The Chargers do not have much room under the cap in order to bring him on. If they would want to bring Flowers onto the roster, it would take a big move to make some space under the cap. It could mean that the Chargers release Jeromey Clary or work a new deal for him.

Flowers would be a nice addition to the roster. The team had issues in the secondary last season and we have been looking for any help that we can get for the team. Jason Verrett will already be an upgrade on the roster. Flowers would add even more talent onto the team.

It would be a legit move. It shows that the team is interested in winning. Last season, the Chargers made a big move late in the offseason to bring in Dwight Freeney. Could they do it again this offseason by bringing in Brandon Flowers.

Wow , I get the feeling he isn’t going to leave . Why would he come here first knowing we don’t have much cap space .

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Because he knows we are desperate for a prowbowl CB, made the playoffs, and want to win now… and we have dead weight on the roster. I am hoping he doesn’t get away. It doesn’t look like it, but we have room to sign him without a doubt. Time for TT to make a decision on some players. The fact that Flowers is even in SD just reinforces what people should be aware of. Clary will restructure, or retire.

      • Nick619chargers4life

Excellent points . On a side note you going to the home opener ?

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I haven’t looked. If it it’s on a Monday, like it had usually been… probably not. If it’s Sunday, I might do a Bolt Beat Tailgate… even if I don’t have tickets.

          • Nick619chargers4life

I don’t have a ticket yet but I’m working on it. It’s on a Sunday 1pm start . The Monday nighter is that Arizona game . I might just get a single club , I’m not sure yet though . We will see .

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Ooooh. Seahawks. Yep… probably gonna be there. Let’s try to coordinate our ticket purchases. Is Ash going? Maybe we can get some other folks to buy tickets with us? That would be DOPE!!!! Also, it’s P.O.W. / Missing in Action Day the following Friday. Maybe we can incorporate that into our tailgate. You down? Ernie? Arnie? Cindi? Colleen?

          • Nick619chargers4life

I have to check with ash but regardless I’m down.

          • Nick619chargers4life

So this Saturday I’m going to head down to the stadium and try and get tickets I’m shooting for P47 L47 L49 and L45 . Hit me up if u want me to call you or something when I get down there to do a group thing if u want .

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Sorry i missed this, I was out of town. I don’t have cash yet anyway. You get tickets?

          • Nick619chargers4life

No I haven’t got the tickets yet this Friday or Monday in going to do that . Also the wounded warrior 5k is at liberty station in point loma I believe , same place LT does his 5k. Here’s the link

i might be doing the wounded warrior 5k with my moms on sat sep. the 13th as well , she walks so were going to walk , if your going to that as well maybe we can meet up there also

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I might be down for that. Where is it?

      • philiprules

Does anyone really think a probowl means doodly squat? How many has Weddle missed to inferior talent?

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Yes… and I have watched him play a lot, too… and he’s good… Better than anyone on our roster now, in fact. People may object… but, letting Cromartie go was stupid. Especially when Cason and Jammer were the alternative. Don’t get me wrong… TT should have licked down a legit veteran starting CB a long time ago. But, here is the lady one standing. Shareece Wright will never sniff aprobowl. Just sayin.

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE sign Flowers. He might make this an eleven win team. If Telesco signs a proven probowl veteran CB right here… I take it all back… simple as that.

    • CALiFORNiAkiD

      Love the enthusiasm.

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Your wallet might disagree… lol. J/K.

        • CALiFORNiAkiD

          Lol

I still have Wright as the #1 if we sign Flowers.

Let Wright take on the bigger more physical WR’s while Flowers takes care of business on the other side.

Let Verrett lock down the slot.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

The bet was that he wouldn’t be the starting CB in 2016, unless there was an injury to the #1 or #2 CB. Obviously, there is a lot of time before then. But, if Flowers signs… dios mio, mang… lol.

          • CALiFORNiAkiD

The bet you made was that he wouldn’t be on the team, period.
Going on and on about how he was garbage and wouldn’t make the team.

I can pull up the convo.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Please do. Was on a game day thread. If not… I will… lol… all fun, of course.

          • CALiFORNiAkiD

“Tell you what… if Shareece Wright is even the #2 CB on the team when 2015 is done… I will personally mail you $50. If not, you mail me $50.” – Peter Thompson

            Obviously we made it 100.

I believe in Shareece Wright. I went back and re- watched those late season games. I saw a special player.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Okay… thought I put an injury clause in there. But, what I meant about “When 2015 is done”, is that if he starts the following season, I owe you $100… That’s what we agreed upon.

I mean… I didn’t have my lawyer present when we made the bet, but you didn’t either… and you know what I meant. Clearly, you think he will start in 2016.

          • CALiFORNiAkiD

Yes you’re right. It’s going to take awhile though. lol

It’ll be fun to track his progress with you throughout the season.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

            We’re bonded through Bolt Beat until 2016… & beyond….

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

This is… BY FAR… the most important development of the offseason… hands down. Don’t let him leave without a contract TT!!! He knows the Chiefs defensive system, and is talented!!! Every team in the AFC West is cringing about this news… PULL THE TRIGGER…. I can’t believe he is even in town… that is huge!!!!

    • Nick619chargers4life

      Indeed !!!!

I will get shirts made if he gets a legit nose tackle.

        • arnie

          mke one for me too.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

            I’ll hand it to you ; )

    • Gunnar Martin

Couldn’t have said it better. Definitely the biggest newsworthy headline going for us this offseason. I’m feeling pretty optimistic about it too because Telesco and McCoy seem to have a knack of signing a guy once they come in for an interview. We hear all the time from the newcomers how they felt like they were wanted and appreciated by the team in the process leading up to the agreement. I SO WANT THIS TO HAPPEN!!!

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Man Gunnar… this is a gift from God himself. It landed right in their laps. When they didn’t sign a veteran CB… NO WAY did they see those coming. Ypu gotta have AT LEAST one probowl CB back there. Verrett will eventually be the next.

        • Gunnar Martin

I agree. We better capitalize on this one, and I really think we will. Telesco is too smart to let the opportunity slip out of his hands. He knows a gift from the heavens when he sees one. He saw it last year with Freeney (well, sort of- Melvin had to get severely injured for it to happen, but you get what I mean).

Just get the man to put pen to paper already, GOSH DANG IT!

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

      21 likes, yo… that’s almost a new record.

          • powderBLUE801

Do we know the record yet? I think mine was only 11 or so. Lol

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I only care about one record. And I hope it exceeds 11.. lol.

          • powderBLUE801

And also how many followers does bolt beat have anyway? That would be kinda cool to find out. And I mean TRUE followers like us who read and contribute every day or every other day!!

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

When I post “polls”… I get upwards of 500 votes… but, I bet that figure is exponentially more, when out comes to readers.

I don’t even care… As long people want to talk REAL sports… and not just hate, and crush stats.. Bolt Beat is here… and we crush stats here too…

Ernie doesn’t care either. He is the best “editing manager” of any of the blog sites. IMO. I don’t think people really understand how awesome he is… he’s like Nick Hardwick… hug Ernie TODAY!!!!!

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Give that one 50 votes… know what I’m sayin?

i honestly have no idea… i wish that disqus kept a count on that.

      • Sergio Quintero

Plus the only way to sign him probably means that Clary is gone, so they probably upgrade at RG as well.

22 I have never come anywhere close, nice job.

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Restructure Clary… cut some Keiser… maybe cut some Ghee or Marshall… dare I say Gilchrist? Front-load the contract.. pay him out big next season… performance based. We have the cap room next season. Pay him then. It can be done, is what I’m driving at.

          • arnie

            Cresden butler before ghee.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

You will see em before we do… lol.

        31!

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

          I know! Crazy.

    • arnie

Flowers just proved he’s intelligent. He knows the Chargers are a playoff team, and after six years, he isn’t getting any younger.
falcons, Viking, texans, jets, are any of these teams headed where Flowers was last season?

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

MAYBE Atlanta.. just based on their receiving corps… but, probably not.

Jets are the Patriot’s dogs…Vikings are bottom of the barrel in their division … and the Texans won’t pay for it… their defense isn’t the problem .

        • arnie

Yeah I can agree with that. I just wanted to point out flowers has already gotten paid. He got half of a $48 million dollar contract, plus last season s his first time in the playoffs after six years. If he’s an upgrade to Marshal, C.Butler, Ghee, Gilchrist why wouldn’t TT take shot at brining him in? The Chargers are going to the playoffs this year, and he can take a low. ER salary this season and get paid with an incentive laid contract, when the chargers have the in 15′.

      • Nick619chargers4life

        another excellent point .

      • Jack Huber

really good point. The guy is from Florida, but has been living in middle America central for the longest time. San Diego would be the place to be if he wanted the best situation for a little less cash (if he’s that kind of guy).

        • rickochey

I lived in KC for the past 1.5 years and recently moved back to SD. All the fans and radio peeps (810am) wanted him gone. He did get burned quite a bit.

          • arnie

Then he’s in good company, there are players here the fans want gone, and some of them still produced. From what I’ve researched, he got burned last season, when they changed defensive schemes, and put him in the slot. The seasons before that he has been the chiefs best player in the back field.

          • rickochey

I just remember the fans were all saying he was over paid and he sucked. I think sometimes fans of other teams think just because a guy is getting paid means he’s good. He might be, but when fans have seen him play every week for the past years they kinda know what they are talking about. If he was a $900,000 a year player would we be saying ‘sign him’ or ‘Nah, lets see what our guys can do’

          • arnie

I heard the same things too. There in lies the issue, since most NFL people believe fans “don’t know what we’re talking about”. The reality, is Flowers an upgrade to what the Chargers have on the roster, right now? I’m willing to bet, if TT brings him in, he won’t sign him to a $10 million a year deal. TT will pay him what they think he’s worth.
Flowers has to decide if he wants to play for a contender, or hold out for more money, elsewhere, get his ten accrued years in the league an watch San Diego hoist the Lombardi and wonder what could have been.

          • rickochey

nice!!!! Explain how his salary worked with KC, Does he get a portion of his salary or nothing since they cut him?

          • arnie

WE would pay him Zero, he’s FA. They released him so the Chief take any cap hits, an pay any guaranteed money.

    • JeremyG

Brandon Flowers struggled to live up to his contract in 2013. His -9.8coverage grade was worst on the team and 96th out of 110 graded cornerbacks. Releasing Flowers would create $3.5 million in cap space.

  • Braulio

Let’s hope they sign him but Also, let’s hope he’s not a bust like cox was

    • http://www.mpagels.weebly.com Matt Pagels

I agree, but he technically only had one really bad year (last season) and possibly it was because of Sutton’s scheme. One of my pros in my article was that Flowers could regain his form in Pagano’s scheme. Another pro was playing against the former team that cut you, which could be one of the reasons he’s in San Diego right now!

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

      Cox didn’t make the pro-bowl.

      • Braulio

That’s true but everybody was excited when cox sign

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I here what you are saying… but, that was because everyone was sick to death of Cason & Jammer… and would have been happy with ANYBODY else. Personally, my reaction was “Derek Who”? This is different. Unless he comes into camp like Max Starks did, this is perfect timing. I’m sure TT will be careful after the Max Starks incident. Flowers will still have to prove himself in camp, no matter what. But right now, it’s Verret, Wright, and who? Flowers is an immediate upgrade, and probably the #1 CB right off the bat.

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Agreed… I look at it more like this… after Bryant McKinney left town, and we didn’t sign a left tackle last season… everyone was SUPER excited that we signed Max Starks. That went horribly wrong, and Dunlap pulled through (mostly). I would even say that people were more excited for Starks, then they were for Cox. I think the Freeney / Starks / Flowers (possible) signings have more in common than the Cox and Flowers signings.

I mean… were people really AS excited when Starks or Freeney were signed, as they were when Cox was signed? No way. Ironically, none of them contributed last season (Freeney did when healthy, and might this year). So, TT will most certainly be watching Flowers closely, if signed.

  • shane

whoa now…RELAX…yes he made the pro bowl last year, yes he graded out poorly overall, no he shouldn’t have been in pro bowl. yes he was in the wrong system, but lets chill. They’re giving him a look

  • Edward Sherman

Don’t wanna be a downer but a tm like ATL has more cash i would love him depends if he loves playing in SD.

  • Stefanie Smith

He was only making about $3.5 mill and a bonus last year. I can’t find anywhere where he was due to make $11 mill. He won’t get that anywhere. So we likely don’t have to worry about that. TT could make this work for both sides.

    • philiprules

Flowers = 5’9″, 187 pounds. Didn’t you earlier question the Verrett pick due to his size?

      • Stefanie Smith

Yes. Flowers has NFL experience, whereas Verrett is still recovering from injury and has no NFL experience. And as to size, everyone else seemed to disregard the size issue. If it is okay for Verrett, then okay for Flowers.

Side benefit: Not sure what the value of this is, but he can give inside info on the Chiefs. Now, that–Verrett cannot do.

  • esco charger

I wouldn’t mind a two year deal worth 10 million make him earn his lighting BOLTS would be the starter opposite Wright and Williams at the nickel this could only be good for the team creates competition so you have the best talent on the field can’t wait til this season starts I will be at the opener plaza end zone 54 row 2 BOLT UP

  • philiprules

“Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun reported the Lions are one of 10 teams that have “reached out” to Flowers. Despite interest from the likes of Detroit, Baltimore, Minnesota and Atlanta, Wilson maintains that discussions remain at an infant stage, and that a deal is not imminent”.

Close this deal TT!!!!!! It would be a huge surprise, especially in our division! Chiefs fans will be so upset, and we will finally solidify our secondary without putting all the pressure on Verrett.

    • Sergio Quintero

That settles who will play the nickel corner, secondary gets better, Verrett’s learning curve eased to a reasonable level, win in both positions.

  • FitzWilly

    make it so TT
    stick it to the Chef’s
    cut Clarey-bell, and sign BF

  • powderBLUE801

I just know we will sign him I feel it!! We never bring someone in without giving them a contract. And for him to visit us first has to say that TT and McCoy already have a plan to make some cap space. We wouldn’t waist our time and his if we didn’t already have a plan to bring him a contract.

  • Sergio Quintero

First off, sign the man lets get that out of the way first, he’s a legitimate top 15-20 corner in the NFL, there is a rub and its a major one, the off man zone coverage which Pagano favors is here to stay, and if it wasn’t clear to the fanbase by now, the chargers are completely married to it.

Most fanbases want to copy the Seattle model of big corners, that play press, that use length to disrupt patterns, and in general make throws difficult for QB’s, the chargers are going for the exact opposite direction and Flowers is a major confirmation of the reality, Flowers throughout his career has been an off man corner, he was asked to play press by the chiefs DC Bob Sutton last year, it was a square peg in a round hole situation as Flowers dropped to a below average corner in a scheme that didn’t fit him.

I can’t remember the last time the chargers had a for real can play no.1 corner, and Flowers as an off man corner is still that, I have stated for a long time I’m not a fan off man zone system Pagano favors, but if they bring in Flowers they could actually have a top 10 secondary, and at least an above average secondary, I can’t remember the last time I had that expectation, so Telesco get it done.

  • RZ

Surprised he made the Boltz his first stop,Now it’s just a matter of, if he likes the offer or not…let’s hope he does.GO BOLTZ!!

    • Sergio Quintero

Normally you don’t visit if you haven’t talked at least basic contract parameters even before you visit, that is why most free agents don’t take multiple visits, because they are visiting a place that already offered a deal they would like beforehand. Lets hope that this specific case fall under the usual 95%, where the first visit is the only visit.

      • Diegoblue

Let’s hope brother.. They saying that’s he’s stayin overnight

      • Gunnar Martin

Hey Serg I remember you explaining one time how to get past the pay wall on the UT. Could you inform me again? That’d be great.

          • Gunnar Martin

Thanks man! It works for me. I’ll definitely be using this in the future :)

      • RZ

Well, let’s just hope the reason he left town today was to go back home and let his family know they’re moving to San Diego.

  • 619rockstar

That would put us in the playoffs, for sure, that’s if no one gets hurt

  • 619rockstar

They better not let him leave today, lol

  • Marcel West-Bailey

Flowers has no other visits scheduled today. It’s very possible he WANTS to be a Charger. Or stick it to Andy Reid. Whichever.

Flowers is 28, he’s 5’9″, thinks he’s worth a ton of money despite loosing his playing time on the outside to other Chiefs as last season progressed, and decided not to even show up for his team’s voluntary session. Is this really what the Charger’s need…is there an extra jersey laying around in the locker room with “Cox II” on the back? How ’bout rewarding our own younger players with snaps. I think I’d rather see more of Williams abilities after he’s completed two full training camps and had chances in as many as six pre-season games by the regular season kick-off. And what cap space we’ve got I’d hold in the bank until I see about potential injury loses in camp.
