Now that we have a more complete roster after the draft, we can see that we have loads of talent all over the roster. Who will make our 53 man roster? will Malcolm Floyd emerge as our number #1 receiver again? Will Keenan Allen have a sophomore slump in 2014? Will Jason Verrett be our answer to our laggy secondary? All of these questions come into play when judging who will make the 53 man roster when September comes.

In this article I will be evaluating the rosters key positional match-ups on the offense heading into training camp and the preseason as well. Also, I will include which player has the upside in winning the job in these match-ups. Well, let’s get into it folks, I will start with the quarterbacks:

    D. Brown was paid to be the starter after this year. But right now… RM24 is the man.

Allen will be the go to guy for sure.

Brown will loose his spot to Inman.

Clary will get cut before june first (I can dream)

Its nice to see someone else show some Dontrelle love! My fiancee is from Toronto so we have watched a few Argos games and the guy is a burner!

Well let’s start with the QB situation. First more I would have to think that there is a real reason why Sorenson was kept on out roster as our number 3 QB. He may not have the expeirance but he has all the tools to play in the NFL. Plus it really seems to me that he is a really smart player. He seemed to have picked up the offnese so well last year. I really believe that the the beginning of the season we will have one backup QB. Who do you think it will be if we could only pick one.

  • Sergio Quintero

    1) QB’s: Both stay, Sorensen needs to play out of his mind to take the no.2 spot.

    2) Allen vs. Floyd: Not a fight in any way, Allen is the split-end, i.e. the possession receiver in this offense, the role Boldin played in the offense for the Cardinals, Floyd is the flanker, i.e. vertical threat, 2 yards behind the line, playing on the TE side, the Fitzgerald role. The chargers offense is very much based on the Whisenhunt offense in Arizona.

    3) Inman, Brown, Ajirotutu & Reese: Chargers carried 5 WR’s last year, so if they repeat that, 4 guys for 2 spots, maybe they carry 6 if Reese can return kicks, if the number is 5, put me down for Brown & Inman, I’m guessing the chargers are in no hurry to cut a 3rd round pick.

    4) Mathews vs. Brown: Mathews is the no.1 back, the chargers might want to keep his carries at 15-20 and avoid the 29 carry games he had late in the season, if and when Mathews gets hurt then Brown is no.1.

    5) Kick returner/backup RB: Reese has to included with the 2 RB’s you mentioned, whoever wins the return job probably stays the other 2 are probably gone.

    6) RG: Until I see Clary cut, dude is the starter, doesn’t make me happy, but until I see the guy take a pay cut or be cut, he’s the starter, no matter how good Watt is, and yes Watt will outplay him by a ton. Politics wins, and Clary stays at RG.

    Other training camp battles:
    7) Play distribution for NT’s between Lissemore, Carrethers & Geathers.
    8) OLB’s: The chargers carried 5 OLB last year, 4 are locks (Freeney, JJ, Ingram & Attaochu), so 4 guys English, Williams, Keiser & Law are fighting for at best 2 spots.
    9) Nickelback & SS: Gilchrist will fight for both but he might lose both, and barely see the field.

I will be writing another article like this but for the defense, thanks for the leak Serg lol. And I agree on all acounts

    • fact

Yea this is basically right except 9 the chargers are in no hurry to cut a second round pick

      • Sergio Quintero

I didn’t say cut, just irrelevant inactive player, like say Jonas Mouton or Brandon Taylor, Gilchrist better win one of those spots if he doesn’t he’s inactive most sundays.

  • Unsilent Minority

No way that Tutu beats out Vincent Brown. Also don’t forget about Eddie Royal.

    • Nick Mansoor

Eddie is our slot man, he has really no competition, he looks like he will handle his job in 2014

  • Anthony95

    Nice article.
    1. Clemens #2, Sorensen #3

    2. No competition between Allen and Floyd, both will get plenty of balls I say 80+ each

    3. WR back-up – Brown or Inman – unless there is a gem out of Herndon, Chancellor, T Allen, Hatfield (my bet Chancellor surprises), with Tutu maybe being cut

    4. RB – Mathews RB 1, Brown backing him up, Woodhead #3/change of pace, same with Grice

    5. RB 4 – Grice for reasons you mentioned. I see him taking Woodheads spot in 2015 with WH not being resigned (youth movement of team, extra speed which is who TT wants)

    6. OG – Clary and Watt is going to be close & can go either way. I see Clary winning out but also Clary will take over if someone gets hurt which puts Watt in at RG. Though i do see a restructure for Clary coming or he has to be let go (other guys on O-Line can’t be happy with how much more he is getting paid).

Totally disagree with you on Troutman. I don’t even see him making the final 53 as he was absolutely destroyed in the playoff game. Last year was Clary’s first at OG and he did pretty well.

I see D. Johnson making the team (he will be replacement for Hardwick since he is retiring after season) also see Sirles making the team which will make Troutman or Harris expendable (my best Troutman gets cut.)

    • Rob Base

Troutman I could see getting cut. Chancellor I think makes the team. T Allen could make the PS. I also see Dj Johnson making the roster bringing depth at OG. I’m rooting for Tenny Palepoi he could make the PS not sure if he could lock a roster spot.

    • Nick Mansoor

yeah i was over exagerrating about the Johnny Troutman thing lol

  • Marcel West-Bailey

I like that write up on the RBs Ernie. I’m looking at that contract for Brown and I’m pretty certain Matthews is gonna be gone next year. Seems like Telesco wants to have his type of players there and Matthews isn’ that guy.
