Count Down to Camp: Marion Grice

Telesco took a Running Back in the 6th round?! That was my reaction when I watched the NFL Draft on DVR. With so many other positions that could have been addressed, especially when you traded away the 4th pick. A running back Tom?! Then I dug into is background…

Appeared in 10 games for Blinn in 2010 and ran 160 times for 1,169 yards (7.3-yard average) and 17 TD’s with eight receptions for 90 yards (11.3) and no TD’s. In 2011 after totaling 174 rushes for 1,052 yards (6.0) and 16 TD’s and 14 catches for 171 yards and 2 TD’s. Despite not starting any games for ASU in 2012, he scored 11 rushing TD’s and led FBS running backs with 8 receiving TDs. Rushed 103 times for 679 yards (6.6) and 11 TD’s and caught 41 passes for 425 yards and 8 TD’s. In 2013, totaling 191 carries for 996 yards and 14 TD’s and 50 catches for 438 yards and six TD’s; he also returned 21 kickoffs for 507 yards and no TD’s (was the only player in the country to surpass the 400-yard mark in each of those categories).  The full spread..

Here’s what caught my eye…

“Had 39 TD’s in his 24-game ASU career and did not lose a fumble in 406 touches.”

Grice is an interesting study. kid can play, he has great hands holds onto the ball. 6th rounder could be productive in the future. dont see him starting this year, unless its for return purposes.

    • arnie

Even if that’s all he does, he will take those roles away from Royal, Allen, an Verrett, whom i would like to see stay healthy, an focus on their “main” jobs.

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

39 touchdowns just aint what it used to be lol RB’s get no respect for doing anything anymore, I’m surprised young guys want to even play the position anymore.

    • tubbs45

It is crazy how little “value” teams have for RBs these days…

    • arnie

LOL. “It’s a passer driven league….”, baloney. It’s a team sport and you can’t rely on one aspect your team to wIn Championships. The Chargers knew this, before the seahawks embarrassed manning and won it all. Ignoring Grices’ “versatility ” and production is madness.

      • Aaron Johnson

If it was a passing league, we would not have stayed in any of the games with Denver. We stayed in the games because the league cant protect against solid run games with tall lanky guys as DBs.

  • Tazzster

I really like this pick up. I think this guy will suprise us.

And I totally agree with the planning for the future thing. With both Woodhead and Matthews being free agents…. One or both of them might not want to stay… Woodhead is going to get a lot of looks from teams if he has production like he did last year.

I think it’s RM24 that may have frog legs by seasons end. However i wouldn’t put it past them if they appeared in “titan” uniforms, next season. ;)

      • Derek

I’ll put ken in the Eli manning catergory if that happens. I hate seeing players we drafted in other uniforms! And even more I hate poaching coaches even though McCoy and Tt are guilty of that……

        • arnie

True, but when it’s “My Coach” an ” My GM” #(&@$$!

  • Nick619chargers4life

I like how shifty he is in the open field . Can’t wait to see him catch a pass out of the backfield this preseason and he take it to the house 40 yards out .

  • Rob Base

406 touches and no fumblelia! I’m sold lol Telesco is the weird science guru of football. Great article!

  • Joel Garcia

I could see him become a weapon like, how Green Bay uses Cobb.

  • Derek

Looks like Shane Vereen to me by next season. I hope we find away to keep rm24 though. I think his best yrs are ahead of him simmilar to Donald he’s finally putting it together. Matthews, Donald, and griece would be ideal then all we gotta worry about is grooming another reciever or 2 and some linemen.
