May 8, 2014; New York, NY, USA; Jason Verrett (TCU) poses for a photo with commissioner Roger Goodell after being selected as the number twenty-five overall pick in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft to the San Diego Chargers at Radio City Music Hall. That was an interesting draft, very interesting. Who knew the Buffalo Bills were going to trade up for Sammy Watkins? Who knew Johnny Manziel was going to fall to pick 22? Like I said, it was a very interesting draft indeed. Here is a recap of the Chargers 2014 draft picks:

Round 1) Jason Verrett CB

Round 2) Jeremiah “Attack You” Attaochu  LB

Round 3) Chris Watt OG

Round 4) Traded away

Round 5) Ryan Carrethers NT

Round 6) Marion Grice RB

Round 7) Tevin Reese WR

So now that we have completed picking our 2014 draft class, I would like to shed some light on the position these players will be fitting in and how they could be used. I will go in the same order as our picks were made. Here we go:

I really like Grice actually more then Thomas I think he s a tougher runner and can run inside more effectivly. they guy scored 39 td’s in two years at ASU that is huge production.

    • Cody Young

Agreed. I’m surprised we didn’t here more about Grice before the draft because everything I’m seeing now is really impressing me. He could almost start at WR!

    • zeus619

Same here. Grice pick is a solid pick up, sixth round for a guy who lived in the end zone sounds good to me. In two years he had like 39 TD running and catching. He’ll be a project but could be another weapon for our Offense down the line.

    • Alter Ego

Yes yes and yes Brennan – he really is that guy coming into a solid backfield – and so thankful for that…we will – as everyone else will, hear his name a bunch.

  • zeus619

Really like Verrett and Attachou picks. Defense was the biggest issue going into the draft and I feel that we did a good job adding talent to it. Can’t wait for season to start.

  • Cgoodness13

The main thing all these rookies have to do is hit the weight room and listen to the coaches, do that and all of them could be big time players for years to come

  • BlueBoltFan

I think a guy that has kind of slipped under the radar is Ryan Carrethers. I preferred Zach Kerr because he has a poor man’s version of Louis Nix’ skill set. But Carrethers isn’t just a typical space eating NT. He was highly productive in 2013 with 93 tackles, 8 TFLs, and 4 sacks. That’s CRAZY production for a nose tackle. It means he can get off blocks and has a nose for the ball. That typically translates well to the NFL. He is a bit short armed which isn’t ideal, but he has legit potential to be a hidden gem in this draft.

    • Diegoblue

i agree about Carrethers ..incredibly stong (squatted over 700lbs) was a wrestler they say so he knows about leverage. 6’1 1/2 and almost 340lbs will be hard to move in the middle

    • Parker Richardson

Very true! The more i look at Carrethers the more i like him! I don’t think he is going to have the same type of production that he had in college, but he will be exactly what this defense needs, which is a really strong, durable force in the middle to occupy blockers. He is going to greatly improve our run defense from the first game IMO. Donald and Manti are going to be stoked!

  • Nick619chargers4life

I wanna see Reese get 2 or 3 plays a game only. for now that is . Just go deep ! Stretch the field . I want the whole stadium to know his route and just use his speed to burn it into the endzone . Speed kills . Can’t stop what u can’t catch .

  • Alter Ego

    Nice post Nick
I think all of our picks can be future starters.
Your assessment of Verrett and Attouchu are on par with what other analysts are saying – I liked the way you elaborated on their projection as starters in the future and agree.
I differ with Grice – he may surprise everyone. He reminds me of Arian Foster – a lot. He will define his own role without regard to our other backs.
And Reese…phhht – he can play on the outside and I believe he will not only make the team but be a factor for us… BCS record holder for 21, 40+ yard scoring plays – 3rd on all time receiving yards at Baylor…he is a gamer. A great pick up for us – needs to add some beef so he doesn’t get snapped in two…I’m excited about him.

    • Gunnar Martin

Yes! That’s I’m talkin about! I agree on all accounts dude.

      • Alter Ego

Gunnar – I think we bob to the same beat…I always enjoy your viewpoint even if sometimes we have a different opinion…are you going to play fantasy football this year?

        • Gunnar Martin

I’ve been wondering whether I should take a break this year or not since I ended as top dog in two leagues last season, which would make this a great time for a temporary retirement ;) However, if I do decide to play again this year, I think it’d be pretty awesome to go up against you and maybe some of the other guys from the Bolt Beat Fam.

          • Alter Ego

Tried to wheel you in last year …we had a strong league of true competitors representing this site – your decision…I won the league…are you ready? – ha ha …threw that in to make your wheels turn.

          • Gunnar Martin

I’ll definitely be thinking about it ;)

          • Alter Ego

No pressure,,,yes there is…its in public now…you gotta join – we got an impressive group that you chat with daily.

          • Gunnar Martin

            What website is it on?

          • Alter Ego

Phhhht…nfl.com – I decided to make it the most friendliest site available for the Bolt faithful – it’s an excellent site actually. I played in 33 leagues last year – by far the best FFL site in my opinion.
This year I’m going to do a bit more writing…so only 10 leagues – this will be one of them. Let me know…early – love to have you.

          • Gunnar Martin

33?!? You can’t be serious… I thought my uncle was crazy for doing 18! Haha. When I first started on nfl.com, I hated it, but it gradually grew on me and I’m mostly fine with it now. Don’t be surprised if I end up joining. Sounds like a blast.

          • Alter Ego

Won 23…Josh Gordon(wrote an article on another site) and DeSaun Jakson – helped a lot – knew they would.
Come with it bro – I will test you – it will be fun

          • Alter Ego

Everyone in the Bolt Beat league is very competitive and knowledgeable – let me just say that again…very competitive and knowledgeable – that is why I would think you would be interested. I believe you will hold your own.

          • veazy

Except for me. I really suck at fantasy football.

          • Alter Ego

            are you playing again Veazy?

          • veazy

Sorry AE, fantasy football isn’t for me.

          • Alter Ego

Thats okay Veazy…enjoyed playing with you last year.

    • Nick Mansoor

Thanks for the love Alter Ego. And yes I agree as well, I hope they all become stars.

      • Alter Ego

You are an impressive easy read writer – keep doing it dude.
You offer up good opinions – be different…I think it will make a difference.

        • Nick Mansoor

thanks bro, thats exactly what I try to do! looks like it’s working lol

    • Scott Lee Miller

Totally agree with the comparison to Arian foster. I really believe every single one of these draft picks will contribute to our team moving forward…

      • Alter Ego

Cool Scott – you may have missed your calling…Charger scout Miller. I’m a charger homer for sure…I have a feeling that Grice will be a scratch your head moment for a lot of folks…I think we are very fortunate to have him – even if we didn’t know it on draft day.

  • jamfed

I’ve been watching some film on Grice and I’m trying to compare him with an existing (or past) NFL player. I really can’t think of any off hand, except for one guy, and you’ll never guess who it is… My Grice comparison was a good college player from Mississippi State, that actually had a position change in the NFL. He started out at a college running back, then he was converted into a wide receiver: Michael Spurlock

    • Cody Young

Marshall Faulk comes to mind, between the way he sets up his blockers and catches passes.

      • jamfed

Marshall Faulk? might be a good comparison for setting up blocks and catching passes, but thats it.
Faulk was a super star in college that stood out above and beyond every player on the field. Grice doesn’t have the foot work or lateral quickness Faulk had. Watching Faulk play at SD State was awesome. Him and Darnay Scott were electric.

  • Joel Ayala

    Great Read.

  • C.Steele

Nice article Nick! Finally, someone not belly aching over their favorite player getting picked! #GoBolts!

  • Robert Fairbanks

    To the new guy:
    Questions.
    1. Who is going to start on the other corner?
    2. What is your prediction on the Chargers final win-loss record?

  • Stefanie Smith

Is Verrett coming off a torn labrum? Or is that something the NFL writers are making up? We got taken down on the power ranksing for Verrett and Attaochu. And I think Denver went down in the power rankings also. I can’t remember.

If he is just coming off an injury, how come no one talks about it except NFL.com?

    • Marcel West-Bailey

He got surgery in either March or April for that tear. I want to say he played most of the season with it. He should be ready to go by the time training camp starts. He may be there for OTA’s.

  • Matthew Sung

I’m curious… Is there a team out there where EVERY pick they made in a draft are full time starters? That would definitely be hitting the NFL lottery where all rounds 1-7 become starters on a team.
