Hidden Gems in Chargers' Undrafted FA Signings

The San Diego Chargers signed 17 undrafted free agents following the draft. There are many great players in NFL history that started their careers undrafted: Tony Romo, Jeff Garcia, Jeff Saturday, London Fletcher, Arian Foster and our very own Antonio Gates to only name a few. Which, if any, can join them in the ranks of great NFL players from the Chargers’ undrafted class of 2014? Here are 3 of the undrafted free agents that could end up paying dividends for the Bolts…

1. Alden Darby, Safety, Arizona State

He has more career interceptions than the Chargers’ first round pick, Jason Verrett. With 10 career picks and 217 total tackles, Darby was a productive defensive back for the Sun Devils. He was second on the team in tackles and interceptions in 2013. Though the Chargers have a solid safety in Eric Weddle, Darby can contribute greatly in special teams and in nickel formations. His 4 picks came against USC, Arizona and Oregon State in 2013, meaning he is battle tested.

HUGE fan of Chris Davis. I know Marcel is too. Really hope he can make his way onto the roster.

Lots of options for PR/KR :)
That part has been sorely lacking for the past few years
even with a decent return game, you could add 2 more wins last year
    just one mans opinion

anyone now if Brelan Chancellor is related to the Kam “ShitHawk” Chancellor?

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

      Lol… What’s a ShitHawk, Mr. Lahey?

      • FitzWilly

        Well, Young Peter
it’s what we call seagulls here in the great white north :)
just curious where is Mr Lahey from ? lol

It’s from one of the greatest shows Canada has ever graced us with… Trailer Park Boys.

Here is a scene where Jim Lahey, the trailer park manager, goes on another one of his drunken rants to “Bubbles”, one of the main characters, (who lives in a shed with cats) about “ShitHawks”. The show is friggin hilarious!!! One of my faves.

            you rock pete
how did you get a hold of trailer park boys way down there

I actually met randy and mr lahey at the casino i was working at
I thanked randy for wearing a shirt, and mr lahey did a quick drunk skit for us
            wicked kewl
            this is too funny pete
            five thumbs up :)

That’s awesome that you got to meet them!!! I saw Ricky & Julian at the burning man festival in Nevada back in 2010.. They were driving their POS car around, and posing for pictures.

          • FitzWilly

            very kewl my friend
they were very nice and down to earth folk :)

Here’s an awesome compilation of his best “shitisms”. Pretty funny.. lol.

    • mikmikewaewa70

No he is not. I was there for all those highlight reels and then some. He gets better each game. His 41″ verticle at his pro day doesn’t’ hurt his ability to go up and get the ball either.

      • FitzWilly

        i’m rooting for him already
there is going to be some great competition
        in training camp this year
        can’t wait :)

  • Nick Mansoor

We are gonna have a kick returning frenzy in preseason. Chris Davis is awesome by the way, can’t believe he didn’t get drafted.

    • Julien Bélair

weird right? he is from a big school…I don’t get it

      • Nick Mansoor

Perhaps NFL scouts are seeing something we don’t? He looks pretty good to me.

        • Julien Bélair

          yes for sure

        • Aaron Johnson

I think it was just a deep draft in general. There were a few guys that fell pretty far.

  • Tazzster

Pulling for Ducre… because he is a Dawg!

  • Dave

Tenny Palepoi looks interesting. Very strong and short-armed like Carrethers. For some reason, the Chargers like that. But, hopefully he will get to compete with Reyes, get some playing time, and stop the run.

  • Julien Bélair

it seems like ST was the focus of the UDFA

    • Why O Why

Last year we were horrible. I doubt that will be our situation this year.

  • Rob Base

Thanks for the post Rob. This dude is a highlight machine! Very impressed with his first step to elude tacklers. 5’9″, 188. We may have the fastest and shortest receiving corps in the NFL next season. I’m starting to like this UDFA class!

      • Rob Base

No problem I’m starting to like the udfa class myself a couple of them could make the roster or ps. Torrence Allen WR I think has a shot also.

    • Anthony Zoccolillo

I hate seeing these 3 minute highlight videos everyone looks so damn good – but this kid is fast, decisive, and elusive as hell. Hopefully that field vision translates to the NFL – loving the speed from this draft.

Chancellor will make the team. Best returner among UDFAs

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Darby makes the team, due to need for depth at safety.
