San Diego Chargers War Room Day 3: 2014 NFL Draft Open Thread

I likely will not be around to make the posts throughout the day since it is the weekend, but the Bolt Beaters will likely all be aware of what is happening and post it in the comments section. That is what I love about this Bolt Beat fam.

We don’t have a 4th round draft selection, so the team will likely have to sit around for a little bit until they make their choice. I would love for the Chargers to get Bruce Ellington with the selection, but we have no clue on which direction that they will be moving next.

At the end of the draft, there should be a ton of movement with the undrafted free agents. Let’s see who Tom Telesco will be able to bring on the roster.

    Nicknamed sweet feet

Not sure what the Bengals are going to do with a WR who’s 0’0″ tall.

    • Marcel West-Bailey

The league probably needs to worry about this guy dunking on the goalposts

  • Julien Bélair

    He looks like Desean Jackson

  • Daryl Peek

The Packers went and got Jeff Janis, surprise. I really hoped we could grab him.

  • Conor Cahill

seems like a trindon holliday type

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Weighs 168… and y’all thought John Brown was too small for the return game… lol. Love this pick too. He could be a deep threat.

  • Sergio Quintero

NFLdraftscout has 4.36 as his best 40, 22.8 yard per catch

    • Diegoblue

      SPEED brother SPEED

  • Conor Cahill

If he adds ~10 pounds Ithink he could be an effective flanker

    • Sergio Quintero

DeSean Jackson was 169lbs when he was drafted, then this guy has a chance

      • Julien Bélair

        yep Jackson 2.0

  • Eli Rodriguez

    I’ve always liked Reese

  • Cgoodness13

he kinda looks like Orlando Jones in the replacements :/

  • Sergio Quintero

I would give Reese a chance as a returner, sub 4.4 he will make it to the 20 just running straight

    • arnie

I can be happy with that.

    • Gunnar Martin

Still like the prospect of having Grice back there (reliable, doesn’t fumble, shifty, experience there), but I’d be fine with him back there once he puts on some weight.

      • Stefanie Smith

Yeah, I think it would be nice if we don’t destroy this kid. He needs to put on some weight. But I was doing some research on DeSean. He is around the same as this Reese’s is. Maybe his slight build and lower weight affected his playing. But he is not much different than DeSean Jackson in weight when Jackson was drafted.

        • Gunnar Martin

I could see him becoming a very, very dangerous deep threat in the NFL, much like Jackson. Desean did put on some bulk, so I expect Reese to follow a similar path.

  • arnie

i can’t wait to see these guys in camp and there are still rookies out there that can add depth and value….

  • Gunnar Martin

Home run hitter type. Have to line him up so that he doesn’t have to face press coverage though…

    • Sergio Quintero

      Deep throws off the slot??

  • Marco R.

    41 inch vertical? Damn.

  • FitzWilly

    Nice pick
a burner that can take the top off defenses
Over all good draft by TT and crew :)

  • Gunnar Martin

Crazy thought… what if Michael Sam turns out to be Mr. Irrelevant??

    • http://www.standupforkids.org blackroseMD1

I was thinking that earlier. Would make a weird kind of sense. I could see him doing pretty well in Houston too.

      • NativeSanDiegan

        PRETTY well? lol

        • http://www.standupforkids.org blackroseMD1

In the Texans D as a rotational player? Yeah.

    • Marcel West-Bailey

That would be the biggest oxymoron of all time

  • Sergio Quintero

38 catches 867 yards 8 TD’s in 9 games (22.8 yards per catch), before breaking his wrist and missing the rest of the season, I’m intrigued.

  • Stefanie Smith

    Reese:

WEAKNESSES: “In desperate need of NFL weight training and nutrition — is rail thin with small hands and weighed the lightest of any combine participant. Can be jammed and re-routed at the line. ” This kid needs work. But that is what a 7th round pick is for.

    • Marcel West-Bailey

You gonna mention any positives? lol

      • Sergio Quintero

STRENGTHS Boasts freakish athleticism, including rare leaping ability. Explodes off the line. Fast and sudden. Turns over fluid stride with length and frequency. Stretches the field vertically. Tracks and adjusts to throws and displays terrific body control. Catches easily — snatches throws out of the air. Good short-area quickness. Darts upfield after the catch. Playmaking ability — averaged 19.4 yards per catch the last three seasons. Paced all receivers at the combine with a 41-inch vertical jump and tied for the longest broad jump at 11 feet.

      • bolt up!

lol i guess thats how skinny he is

      • Stefanie Smith

You guys took care of that and sort of ignored the negatives.

    • Sergio Quintero

I still think Reese has a better shot at making the team than Grice, we know the 3 RB’s ahead of him are making the team, and most teams don’t want to carry 4 guys.

      • Gunnar Martin

Practice squad? And I have hope that they convert him to more of a receiver than a running back.

        • Sergio Quintero

If I were him I would prefer to be a slot WR rather than a RB that is a more valued position.

          • Gunnar Martin

He’d probably have a longer, perhaps more successful career as well.

        • Stefanie Smith

I think he is heading to the practice squad. That is where the 7th round picks go. And hopefully, when his number comes up, he seized the opportunity. I am talking about Reese. I have no feeling about Grice. A lot of these guys end up on the practice squad. Some eventually get cut.

  • Conor Cahill

Damian Copeland is also still available

  • Gunnar Martin

Seriously, what is wrong with Coleman?! Anybody?? This is crazy.

    • Sergio Quintero

Imagine Coleman signed as UDFA, its possible

      • esco charger

I wanted to draft him idk if he will sign is Jackson jeffcoat still on the board ????

      • Julien Bélair

        haha epic

    • http://www.standupforkids.org blackroseMD1

Gotta be something bad there. I hope we grab him as an UDFA.

  • Gunnar Martin

    Ahmad Dixon is gone

  • Gunnar Martin

    Sam drafted by the RAMS!

    • http://www.standupforkids.org blackroseMD1

      Nice!

      “Adam Schefter
Radio City Music Hall chanting, “Michael Sam! Michael Sam! Michael Sam!”

  • Marcel West-Bailey

    Sam got drafted

    • http://www.standupforkids.org blackroseMD1

According to Schefter, Radio City Music Hall went nuts chanting his name too.

      • Gunnar Martin

And that gay bar in LA. lol

        • Marcel West-Bailey

You mean “those gay bar in the US” ? lol

        • Marcel West-Bailey

I think I just saw the gay bar you were talking about…those men are sugary. I don’t have anything against ‘em but they are some sugary fellows

  • RoyalChargers

I liked Jackson Jeffcoat I hope we pick him up

  • Daryl Peek

Rams and Sam coming to LA soon 0_0

  • Gunnar Martin

    From Gehlken-

Tevin Reese said he was a 143-pound Wing-T tight end in high school. Hand in ground. Faced linebackers. “A lot of cut blocks.”

    LOL

    • Julien Bélair

      epic !

  • Marcel West-Bailey

I WANT LONNIE! CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP

  • http://www.standupforkids.org blackroseMD1

    • Marcel West-Bailey

      Burn

    • Marcel West-Bailey

  • http://www.standupforkids.org blackroseMD1

    “Adam Schefter
Today, Missouri DE Michael Sam is Mr. Relevant. Mr. Irrelevant is Memphis S Lonnie Ballentine, the Texans pick at No. 256.”

And that’s all until next year! Time for some UDFAs!

  • FitzWilly

    good times
    good friends
    good draft picks

Now lets get on with this GD season :)
    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BOLTS

  • Marcel West-Bailey
  • Marcel West-Bailey

Chargers agree to terms with ex-West Texas A&M WR Torrence Allen. 6-foot, 183 pounds. Had 93 rec, 1,272 yards, 8 TD in ’13.

    • http://www.standupforkids.org blackroseMD1

Nice. I’d like to get a big body (6’3″+ 228ish) WR though.

  • http://www.standupforkids.org blackroseMD1

    From Gehlken:

Chargers agree to terms with former Utah DT Tenny Palepoi. 6-foot-1, 298 pounds. Versatile. May see him most at end in 3-4.

    According to SB Nation:

    S Alden Darby, Arizona State
    DE Colton Underwood, Washington

    • Gunnar Martin

      Nice

Heh, looks like we just signed Joe Flacco’s brother. I wonder if he’s elite…

    • Marcel West-Bailey

      Nice. Another TE

  • Harry Philpot

i’d say its been a pretty good weekend

    • Julien Bélair

I agree … very pleased with the Chargers picks

  • Nick619chargers4life

DT Ricky Tjong-A-Tjoe, Boise State …. thats a hell of a name

    • Marcel West-Bailey

I’ve decided if he makes the team I’m going to yell his name for absolutely no reason during games.

      • Nick619chargers4life

im right there with you on that one

        • Marcel West-Bailey

I don’t know how to say it but I’m gonna be yelling something. Just found out it’s Chong-Guh-Chew

  • http://www.standupforkids.org blackroseMD1

    Current list, according to NFLtraderumors

    Arizona State S Alden Darby
    Illinois State DL Colton Underwood
    Utah DT Tenny Palepoi
    DT Ricky Tjong-A-Tjoe
    Portland State RB DJ Adams
    New Haven TE Mike Flacco
    Arkansas WR Javontee Herndon

Herndon is a pretty decent WR, but his hands can be a bit iffy.

Maybe we should just have a unified UDFA thread.

  • Nick619chargers4life

they got weddle ranked super low

    • Nick619chargers4life

      92 smh

    • Julien Bélair

I don’t care about that…. it just make the chip on his shoulder bigger

      • Nick619chargers4life

        Indeed but still pretty lame

        • Julien Bélair

          ya I know….

  • Nick in PB

I stepped out for a while and WOW. 1052 comments! Love this site. It’s a bleed Charger Blue and Gold site!!!

    • Julien Bélair

      it’s a family site man… I love it

      • NativeSanDiegan

Except when some people go overboard with vulgarity. Especially towards a friendly visitor from another AFC West city. But I must confess I got a bit carried away with an unfriendly Traiders jerk until Chargergirl Cindy reminded me to take the high road and stay out of that black hole.

    • Gunnar Martin

      1062!

  • Julien Bélair

    verrett will wear 22 !!

    • NativeSanDiegan

Keith Lincoln’s number if I recall early 1960′s correctly. A great fullback paired with one of my top players ever, no. 23 Paul Lowe. Also Dickie (spell?) Post, a great rb paired with Brad Hubbard at fb. Great duo until knee injuries cut their careers short and robbed them of speed and quickness. ACL surgeries weren’t so good back then. Pretty much ended careers.
Verrett should be honored to wear that number, especially in the powder blues. Makes my heart jump just recalling it.
