San Diego Chargers War Room Day 1: 2014 NFL Draft Open Thread

Welcome to the Bolt Beat war room. It is now open for business and everyone is invited to talk about all the craziness that is happening on the day. Of course this post will be at the top of the site until we make our selection with the first selection.

Will we even make a selection in the first round though? There is a lot of talk about the Chargers moving down in the draft in order to pick up some draft picks. It sounds like a great idea, but we still need to find a partner to make that deal .

Today is the day and I am looking forward to seeing what tricks Tom Telesco has up his sleeves for this draft. He picked up some nice talent last season and we have some high expectations for the coming year.

To start out the open thread, let’s talk about what positions the team needs to bring in during this first few rounds of the draft. What are the team’s top priorities?

Please address that front 7… It won’t matter who is in our defensive back field if the front 7 can’t get after the QB… Welcome to SD Jason Verrett

  • RZ

    Looking forward to round 2 & 3 tomorrow…. peace

  • Marcel West-Bailey

I am stupid excited right now

    • Sergio Quintero

It Put my theories I have for Telesco in display, and it confirmed, production drafter, measurables are very secondary to this guy.

      • Julien Bélair

        ya Verrett is the man

      • Marcel West-Bailey

I think most of us knew that even though some didn’t want to expect it. And I think he was the best corner on the board. I hit him up on Twitter to welcome him to the team and I think I’m going to give him a link to some growth pills he can take.

        • Sergio Quintero

I remember that Darren Smith interview with Gehlken and you could listen to smith put together the Verrett pick.

          • Marcel West-Bailey

What I hope though in his rookie season is that if he doesn’t do well the first assumption isn’t due to his lack of size. If he gets beat on every jumpball or misses tackles that’s fine but I want him to be judged fairly.

          • Sergio Quintero

He’s starting outside, I still think the chargers want Williams to play Nickel, play him outside until he proves he can’t play it.

You might ask him to always face the finesse speed WR if he can.

In the division he would get Sanders from Denver, Avery from KC and Jones from the Raiders.

          • Julien Bélair

He will be in their short !!! and welker from Denver also

          • Sergio Quintero

I want him on Welker on 3rd and medium in a clutch spot no question.

          • Julien Bélair

            yep shut him down

        • tubbs45

          Doctors note for HGH

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

dude… everything we thought he was.

  • Julien Bélair

let’s just enjoy the fact that it wasn’t Nix

    • Sergio Quintero

A whole bunch of mocks have him going to the chargers at pick 57, I prefer Ellis & Kerr.

      • Julien Bélair

Right Now I hope we get Adams

        • Sergio Quintero

Lets see if the chargers find Latimer who clearly they seem to like a lot.

          • Julien Bélair

I would be ok with Latimer too

          • Sergio Quintero

Everybody on the page seems to want KVN, so Latimer or Van Noy at 57 sounds good to me.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Do you think Herron could fall to the 4th?

          • Julien Bélair

            I do… for what it’s worth

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

If we get an OLB in the second, I think we may want to get a center in the 3rd. The WR class is deep, so getting one in the fourth is like last year’s 3rd.. where we got Allen.

          • Sergio Quintero

Yeah very good chance, i actually think he might make the 5th, MWC players slip more than they should.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I was thinking that we might take a shot at centerin the 2nd or 3rd. Hardwick IS retiring. Can we afford to neglect that fact? I think that they re-sign Clary, keep Troutman as a back-up, and Rinehart is already under contract. But, who is going to fill Hardwick’s shoes?

          • Sergio Quintero

Marcus Martin has to be an option in round 2, if he’s there in round 3, you run up with the card.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

OK… from what I have seen people post on the board about it, they say “Oh yeah.. I forgot we need a center”, and then forgewt about it two seconds later, and don’t include it in their mocks.. lol. Glad you see the need to. It’s a big one. What if he’s gone.. is Richburg an option in the 3rd?

          • Sergio Quintero

Guard or center in the 3rd round, had Gabe Jackson, because I liked the idea of 2 plowing monsters playing right next to each other, and I would start him ahead of Clary, and have Fluker & Jackson be the key to the running game for next year and the future.

          • Sergio Quintero

Which WR would you like Pete?

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Gosh.. there are so many I like Sergio. I want one who can return kicks. Ellington would be my front runner, I suppose. But, I like Moncrief, Herron, Latimer.. they are all really good in their own right. I just didn’t want one in the 1st round. Now that we have our CB, NT & C are my biggest concerns.

          • Sergio Quintero

I had Huff in the 4th in my mock, had Kyle Van Noy in the 2nd, Gabe Jackson in the 3rd, Kerr in the 5th, Saunders KR Oklahoma 6th, Mauro DE Stanford in the 7th.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

He could even go in the fifth. I like that he had to work for his place on the team.. tough background. He played CB & QB too.. interesting. Does he return kicks?

          • Sergio Quintero

He plays like he can, has a thick RB like build and is really good with the ball in his hands, break tackles. I believe D’Anthony Thomas did most of that at Oregon.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Yeah, I’d be cool with Huff. I think we have the luxury of taking a late round receiver this season, without totally going over Floyd’s head with the pick… still acts as insurance though… Is it going to be Lisse”more”, or do you think we take a NT in the upper rounds? I still think Zach Kerr could be a late round option.

          • Sergio Quintero

Love Kerr’s tape, at worst he’s a complimentary player to Lissemore, wouldn’t be shocked that he outplays Sean and the chargers have Lissemore play more DE.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

The Chargers have been looking at a lot of late-round defensive linemen, for sure. I just found a bunch more they checked out. If I have time, I might post another article before day 3. They have been looking at a ton of LB’s too. Inside & out.

          • Sergio Quintero

Off to diner Pete, long day tomorrow, work and more draft.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

See you then, Sergio.. good looking out with the draft trade link ; )

          • tubbs45

Exactly what I was think about… While I love Lissemores hustle and work ethic, he is a rotational guy better suited to DE

          • Julien Bélair

I like a Wr over KVN personally

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i wouldn’t mind Nix in the next round… would be a solid spot to have him. think he is more talented than those others

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      agree with that

  • Sergio Quintero

Verrett better learn from Allen to throw away his Raiders gear as he grew up a Raiders fan. Hopefully he finds the same level of sucess

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Yeah.. he better delete his Vine account now.. lol… we’re watching.

      • Julien Bélair

        hahaha

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

hahaha.. he can also learn from Allen and kill it as a rookie

    • tubbs45

This just seen on his vine account…

  • Marcel West-Bailey

        • Nick619chargers4life

I wouldn’t count on it , I don’t want to get my hopes up .

        • Nick619chargers4life
