Kevin Acee mentioned again that the Chargers might shy away from TCU CB Jason Verrett in the first round of the draft in his chat yesterday. What would the Chargers do if they didn’t go in that direction? There are a number of different directions the team could go, but they will be keeping all those options open.

With the 25th selection in the draft, the team has to ensure that they are getting the best value for their selection. The team will likely look to move out of that spot, but finding a trade partner will not be easy. If they are unable to find a trade partner at the spot, the team must be thinking that there are higher graded players on the draft board.

Who could be on the team’s draft board?

Cooks if he is there….if not then Su’a-Filo is a Chargers

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

cooks would be legit if he is there

    • esco charger

Su a filo might not be there when we pick have a feeling the dolphins will take him if not then the chiefs will grab him im thinking more and more that if a top corner doesn’t fall to us we will go with Dee Ford I just have a feeling

      • Michael Norton

I agree with your logic here. I’d be okay with all of the above tho IMHO. I think the Chiefs may go Cooks. I hear Andy Reid really likes him and they need big help at WR.

        • Sergio Quintero

Andy Reid had whole lot success with Desean Jackson, Cooks reminds me so much of him, just makes too much sense.

      • Sergio Quintero

Sua Filo to dolphins make a whole lot of sense, Fuller looks like he wont be there, Verrett & Ford appear to be the most likely.

        • esco charger

Completely agree I dont think any of the top four corners will be there when we pick I know people are high on verrett honestly he makes more sense to me as a early to mid second and I do not think he is best player available I think the pick will be Ford if Barr isn’t there I read an article that telesco said that if u think the team is gona draft for needs that ur mock or who u think is gona get picked is gona be wrong so best player available approach

          • Sergio Quintero

I really like Ford, he has elite speed for a pass rusher, and has excellent pass rush technique, I can live with mediocre run defense, and have play mostly a pass rush specialist early in his career, like a Antwan Barnes role.

          • Julien Bélair

I think I prefer Moses over Ford

          • Sergio Quintero

I hear that James is ahead of Moses as an OT, either one of those guys I would prefer them early in the 2nd.

          • Julien Bélair

ya me too but I think Ford is too one dimentional to be our first round pick….he would barely see the field

          • Sergio Quintero

He would see the field, at around 30-45%, teams do tend to like to spread the chargers and make them play nickel.

That percentage would be pretty close to what a NT would see the field, but a CB would possibly see 100%.

          • Julien Bélair

Remember Ingram rookie year? He almost didn’t play…

          • SDmarm17

I think that was more Norv’s fault than anything. He liked to play veterans more.

          • Sergio Quintero

            Great minds think alike!!

          • Julien Bélair

            Stupid Norv

          • SDmarm17

That’s why I think Wright and Gilly will have big seasons this year. Both finally getting playing time and are starters. Basically this upcoming season is their sophomore year in the NFL.

          • Julien Bélair

Wright yes Gilly is depth at best to me

          • SDmarm17

Well they keep moving him around so I think he hasn’t really found his place yet.

          • Julien Bélair

well he is just average everywhere that’s why ;)

          • SDmarm17

But average because they keep moving him. I think if they just kept him in one position, preferably slot he would be much better. But I have a feeling Williams is going to take the slot position before the end of the season.

          • Julien Bélair

            I hope so

          • SDmarm17

If it gets to pick 25 and Cleveland still hasn’t picked up their QB. Do you think they would trade up with us to make sure we don’t trade our pick to Jax or Houston or even Minnesota?

          • Julien Bélair

Well if that happens the Chargers will prefer to trade with Jax or Houston anyway

          • SDmarm17

Why would they prefer that? Cleveland has the 35th pick where Jax has the 39th pick

          • Julien Bélair

OH ok I though that we would swap our 1 round and they would give us something like a fifth round also. But no I don’t see it happening

          • SDmarm17

I could see us swapping first for a fifth rounder if it means someone like Barr is still there at 25. 23.5 hours to go til we know for sure.

          • Julien Bélair

To be honest I would be SHOCKED if Barr is available

          • SDmarm17

I would too, but this is the draft! If someone unexpected takes a QB like Tampa or Tennessee, there could be a good run at QBs via trades.

          • Julien Bélair

If Barr is there when the Eagles are on the clock I think he will be their pick

          • Sergio Quintero

But Norvy didn’t like playing any rookie anyway, McCoy seems more willing to play young players.

          • Julien Bélair

            I really hope so

          • esco charger

I think he is better then barnes and we have butler and teo for run defense that’s why I want a nose so we wouldn’t worry about the run as much I miss big Jamal

  • Nick619chargers4life

I get the feeling this is going to be a tremendous draft for us. Can’t wait .

    • Michael Norton

      :)

  • PowderBlueDrew

What if the Chargers choose to keep continuity going on the offensive line and don’t get a center, but rather let Ohrnberger take over at center after Hardwick retires? Or is that really unlikely?

    • Nick Mansoor

It could happen, Ohrnberger is a very versatile player. He can play all positions on the offensive line. definitely a possibility.

    • Michael Norton

I think Ohrnberger filled in well for Hardwick when he went down. In fact, I don’t think we missed a beat. We should still try to pick up a sleeper C late in the draft or through FA.

  • Nick Mansoor

Would you guys be upset if we picked up Marquise Lee in the first?

I would accept it as it is, I mean, why not?

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      i would love it

      • Nick Mansoor

same here haha. a lot of the readers here i think would get REALLY upset if that happened tho

    • http://boltbeat.com/ ChargerGirl Cindi

Well, according to Ernie, he’s sexy. So, I would say let’s get him. I know we need D, but offensive weapons are hard to come by.

    • Michael Norton

I think we need a WR that is either a blazer (Cooks) or tall (Mathews or Moncrief). Lee is good but a little too much like Keenan Allen (which, of course, is not a bad thing, but does not give us a big red zone target against smaller corners or speed to stretch Ds).

      • Nick Mansoor

big red zone target? Malcom Floyd. BAM! ;)

        • WSU_510_CHARGER

          dont forget Ladarius!

          • Nick Mansoor

Of course Ladarius, we’re talking receivers here tho

        • Michael Norton

Floyd yes, for the 3 games that he is healthy. -_-

      • Sergio Quintero

Same reason I have pushed for Cooks ahead of Lee, Lee seems more of a short intermediate guy when I watched him, I want something different in particular a speed guy to compliment Allen.

  • Marcel West-Bailey

    Ford. War Eagle baby.

    • Michael Norton

Would not mind that pick at all.

      • Marcel West-Bailey

Of course it isn’t!!! He went to Auburn!!!

    • Sergio Quintero

The rumor making the rounds is that Dolphins love Sua-Filo, you have connections down there, what is going down with the Dolphins???

      • Marcel West-Bailey

I called my friend and he isn’t answering the phone. When he calls me back I’ll tell you if he has anything good worth hearing. Ford and Ingram wheewwwww scary

    • Sergio Quintero

I would smile and be perfectly happy with Ford, put him on some slow RT and watch him wreck some havoc.

      • Marcel West-Bailey

Alright Sergio. I just talked to my friend and he was hearing some things from the people in the front and the scouts and he said offensive line has been talked about most.

  • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

I like where you are going about beefing up the O Line…at least add 1 more guy that along w/ DJ, they both can body slam some JokeTown Fakers (those guys that wear silver & black)…I just have my fingers crossed for Dub T to have a great draft and add more players that can start right away and help the team. I am so glad tomorrow is the big day already!!!

  • shane

some draft expert recently said that Su’a-Filo should not be drafted…pretty harsh criticism. I’ve never been a fan of interior linemen in 1st anyways. skeptical

  • http://www.standupforkids.org blackroseMD1

Only 25 1/2 hours left. I’m so ready for this draft.

  • RoyalChargers

I like marquis Lee for some reason I think he’s a problem to tackle

  • http://boltbeat.com/ ChargerGirl Cindi

I like this kid (Su’a-Filo) and I like having actual depth in our line. I feel like tomorrow is Christmas or something….. one … more…. day!

    • Michael Norton

Super exciting time to be a Bolt fan (or just a fan of the NFL).

      • WSU_510_CHARGER

It’s always exciting to be a Chargers fan….

    • Gunnar Martin

      Agree with every word there.

    • NativeSanDiegan

Su’a-Filo seems like the real-deal. Could start and we let Clary with his way overpaid salary go.

  • buckeye54

I really have a lot of faith in Telesco and his eye for talent. And unlike AJ he doesn’t know it all and is willing to consider input from McCoy and the scouts. Since Richard Sherman signed his huge contract extension I thought I’d go back and see how Todd McShay evaluated him on ESPN.com prior to the 2011 draft. He had a score of 30 and was ranked 38th among CB’s (Marcus Gilchrist had a score of 78 and was ranked 9th among CB’s). Sherman ran a 4.54 40-yard dash at the Combine and his 20-yard shuttle time was .04 seconds away from being the worst among DB’s. And he was also rated with below average cover skills. So I think it’ll take a few years to evaluate the draft, but I think TT will make some good choices. But I sure do like Van Noy!

  • BlueBoltFan

Unless a blue chip player takes a serious slide, I’d only be looking to draft Kyle Fuller, Bradley Roby, or possibly Brandin Cooks at #25.

Any other player we’d be likely to draft at #25 wouldn’t be worth more than picking up the extra draft picks, imo. And even trading into the top of the 2nd, we’d still probably be looking at some combination of Louis Nix, Jason Verrett, Kyle Van Noy, Cody Latimer, and/or Demarcus Lawrence. I’d love any of those guys in Lightning Bolts.

    • Sergio Quintero

Fuller seems to be making a push up the draft, the early word is that the Steelers love Fuller. I’m feeling a trade down for the chargers, the only corner that might be there is Verrett.

      • Julien Bélair

or trade up because if we stay at 25 it seems likely that all our targets won’t be there

        • Sergio Quintero

If the chargers love Fuller, I’m starting to convince myself that a trade up might be justified, if they love him go get him.

          • Julien Bélair

that’s what I believe my prediction is this : if Fuller is still available when the Packers are on the clock at 21… we will trade up with them

          • Sergio Quintero

That makes a whole lot of sense, jump Philly and Cincy

          • Julien Bélair

yep ! I hope it happens seriously

          • BlueBoltFan

I agree on moving up for Fuller. I think he’s the best all around CB in this draft.

The only question is, if it looks like Roby will be available at #25, is Fuller better than Roby plus whatever you have to give up to move up in the draft?

          • Julien Bélair

Depends on where you go but let’s say we move up with the packers it would be at worst a 4th round pick and at best a fifth

          • Sergio Quintero

4 spots that okay, something like 10 spots to get ahead of the Steelers that I don’t feel so comfortable.

          • Julien Bélair

            me neither

          • SDmarm17

As long as its a future draft pick, Im okay with that. Hopefully not a first or second rounder though to move up 4 spots.

          • Julien Bélair

            no it would be a 4th or a 5th

          • SDmarm17

But would they take a future pick? so we can take advantage of the depth this year.

          • Julien Bélair

I doubt it they will want a pick this year for sure but hey it depends on how negotiations go

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

I like the Walter football mock that has us getting Cooks in the 1st and Van Noy in the 2nd that would be one extremely cool way to start off the draft.

    • Sergio Quintero

Yeah, I would make changes afterwards but I would be perfectly happy first 2 picks, I would take Philip Gaines in the 3rd round, but no returner, and no Olineman till the 7th, seems unlikely.

    • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

I also hope Bridewater,Bortles,Hagemen,OBJ,Martin,Cojo,Mosley,Nix somehow go before our pick and push some nice talent up our way.

  • BlueBoltFan

I’m not big on drafting guards in the 1st round. You don’t get enough of an impact from interior o-line play. Louis Vasquez was a third round pick. The difference between him and the best guard in the NFL (Carl Nicks maybe?) is minimal in terms of the impact on the team. Going after a guy like Trai Turner, or even Brandon Thomas, in the middle rounds is a better value imo.

    • Julien Bélair

early first I agree but late first is good value on the first G of the draft

      • BlueBoltFan

I don’t think it would be a bad pick. I’m just of the opinion that the early rounds should be focused on the passing game, QBs, receivers and tackles on offense, coverage and pass rush on defense. In the middle rounds you focus more on starters in the run game, offensive guards, runstopping DL and LBs. That way you can get quality starters into later rounds

        • Julien Bélair

I know Gs are not sexy picks

          • BlueBoltFan

It’s not about sexy. it’s about value. We can find a starting guard that’s an upgrade from Clary in the 3 round, maybe even the 4th. Vasquez and Levitre are 2nd and 3rd round pro bowlers. Be we cannot find starting CBs past the 2nd…and even in rd. 2, they’re gonna be projections. After Verrett, there’s a considerable drop off.

          • BlueBoltFan

P.S. if Zack Martin fell to us…then we’re having a conversation. Guard with the ability to play tackle.

          • Julien Bélair

I is a top 15 player imo but anything can happen !

          • Sergio Quintero

Martin will not get passed Miami, no way no how.

          • Julien Bélair

            24 hours away guys !!!

          • Sergio Quintero

Very true, and my directv just died yesterday, going to have to watch it on the PC.

          • Julien Bélair

            wow bad timing

          • Sergio Quintero

My technician said that it will take a miracle to fix it before monday, so basically I’m glued to the PC for the rest of the week.

The tivo is going to get a workout with things I already recorded.

          • Julien Bélair

And this year the second and third round is almost as exiting as the first round !

You will watch it on NFL.com??

          • Sergio Quintero

If they stream for free yes, if not I’ll use Wiziwig.

          • Julien Bélair

I doubt they’ll stream the first round

          • Sergio Quintero

We’ll see I’ll find a solution, not a situation that is ideal but I’ll make it work

          • Julien Bélair

            watch it with friends…?

          • Sergio Quintero

My friends are not in my level of football junkieness, I have season tickets and I go alone.

          • Julien Bélair

That’s why this blog exist right?

          • Sergio Quintero

Yeah pretty much, not much in sharing my problems, but the timing couldn’t have come in a worst time.

          • Julien Bélair

            I feel you haha

          • Julien Bélair

I’m sorry I can’t agree with you but I respect your opinion

          • BlueBoltFan

            Same here. Just different preferences.

    • Sergio Quintero

How do you feel about Dee Ford, I still say I would take Verrett over Ford, in particular for the ammount of snaps that Verrett would get over Ford early in their careers.

      • Julien Bélair

Verrett over Ford all day for me

        • Sergio Quintero

I have seen the Richard Marshall movie, and I don’t want him starting anymore.

          • Julien Bélair

            can you explain ?

          • Sergio Quintero

They need a CB early, if they wait too long and take a developmental guy, by consequence Marshall will start, and we have seen that he is mediocre on his best day.

          • SDmarm17

            Philip Gaines in the second!

          • Sergio Quintero

Gaines, Desir are my favorite post first round corners, and Gaines might be the only one you might risk starting from week 1.

          • Julien Bélair

            I reallllly like Desir also

          • SDmarm17

I really started liking Desir after watching him on Draft Academy on ESPN. He has two daughters and seems like a humble guy.

          • Julien Bélair

            Yep great locker room buddy

          • BlueBoltFan

            Agree again.

          • Julien Bélair

ok ok well I agree I made a post about the fact that we should go Cb in the first no matter what….I’m also really willing to trade up for one as you already know

          • BlueBoltFan

I think Verrett will be better than Richard Marshall. I just don’t know that from a player standpoint he’s all that different from Courtland Finnegan or Brandon Flowers. Good players, but both have limits.

          • Sergio Quintero

Want a corner with less limitations, you might have to give up picks to trade up.

          • BlueBoltFan

            I agree.

      • BlueBoltFan

I really like Dee Ford. I just don’t like him more than trading down and getting D-Lawrence or KVN and an extra pick.

    • Parker Richardson

Yea but Louis Vasquez didn’t develop into a good guard until a few years ago. Giving coach D a top talent at the interior line would have a great impact! Especially in two seasons when we lose the majority of our starters, or this season if we lose a bunch to injuries. A top pick on an o lineman would help solidify the o line for the future. We can’t afford to have our o line take a step back when hardwick retires because all of the success of philip and our offense depends on the o line as we saw last season.

      • Julien Bélair

        this

      • BlueBoltFan

Actually, Louis Vasquez had 1 holding call his rookie year (which he started from week 1). He only has five or six penalties for his entire career. Meanwhile, last years can’t miss 1st round guard prospect Chance Warmack was up and down and #2 guy, Jonathan Cooper, finished the season on IR.

      • BlueBoltFan

I’m not saying the team should get scrubs. I’m saying from a team impact perspective, the difference between a guard in the 1st round vs a guard in the 2nd or 3rd is not as significant as the difference between a 1st round CB, QB, LT, OLB, DE, etc. vs the same positions in the 3rd. To me, that gives more value to those positions early in the draft.
