San Diego Chargers Pre-Draft Prospect Visits

A list of players that the San Diego Chargers met with was released by ESPN today and it had a few names that we have been  talking about on this site. There were also a few names that were not mentioned.

Here are a few of the names sorted out by Sergio:

http://espn.go.com/blog/san-di…

Rumored first rounders: Anthony Barr, Xavier Sua-Filo, Bradley Roby, Jason Verrett.

Rumored 2-3 round guys: Davante Adams, Jeremiah Attaochu, Carl Bradford, Scott Crichton, Cody Latimer, Marcus Martin, Kyle Van Noy.

Players that surprised me to not be on the list: Kyle Fuller, Darqueze Dennard, Justin Gilbert, Louis Nix, Timmy Jernigan, Jarvis Landry, Dante Moncrief, Paul Richardson.

A long list of late round guys that could be UDFA’s c ompesate s most of the remaining list.

Some of the names that didn’t get a visit might be telling. Some of those guys have question marks with their health and the team would likely want to meet with them to see if they are alright. Other prospects  that don’t have many question marks might not even need a visit.

Is it Thursday yet?

I’m not so high on verrett my best choice would be fuller or Dennard but fuller seems to be a more likely option

    • CALiFORNiAkiD

I would go to sleep happy if Telesco picked Verrett in the 1st round.

      • Gunnar Martin

You know what, I would too. We could use a play maker like him.

  • gpack17

I think people read too much on this…fluker, teo, and allen all didnt visit last year..

    • Julien Bélair

not true….. Fluker and Teo visit last year

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

        this is true

        • Julien Bélair

          lol my statement or his?

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

yours.. haha.. teo and fluker did visit

          • Julien Bélair

ok ok I’m not crazy :)

    • Gunnar Martin

Well the second part isn’t true, but I totally agree with you on the first part.

  • Marcel West-Bailey

This makes me wonder. Barr is the only player on here that really can go before the Chargers can pick. I don’t think Roby will and the rest of the players are all 2nd-7th rounders. I wonder if the Chargers may be looking to trade up to get him. Obviously visits don’t mean a guarantee but since Barr has been falling in some drafts lately Telesco may be thinking he can grab him.

    • Julien Bélair

I think Barr will not pass the Eagles

      • Marcel West-Bailey

        Don’t they need a safety?

        • Julien Bélair

yep but they were almost willing to trade their first round ice for Dion Jordan. I think Barr can play the same role in chip kelly defence. They can address the safety position later.

          • Marcel West-Bailey

I think Ernie has the right idea. Chip Kelley is like Mike D’antoni is not concerned about the defense. And if Marquis Lee or Brandin Cooks is available 22, his eyes are going to light up and see the replacement for DeSean Jackson

          • Sergio Quintero

In particular both are Pac 12 guys, Kelly was still in Oregon when Lee was playing like a monster in 2012.

          • Marcel West-Bailey

            I bet Kelly is thinking, if I can’t beat’em, draft’em.

          • Sergio Quintero

He drafted Barkley and Ertz last year

          • Marcel West-Bailey

He’s probably talked to Barkley about Lee.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

they could go for a wide receiver as well.

  • davacho

charles casserly (nfl.com) says many times they would not bring in their guy as part of the smokes and mirrors. LT had no idea…

    • Julien Bélair

Ya but that was 10+ years ago….the draft have change since then.

Our new regime seems to make a visit with the players they want (Fluker and Teo)

      • davacho

casserly is the expert and he was discussing things present tense. my LT comment was for fun.

      • Gunnar Martin

Julien, you have one year to go off of to reference the new regime. The draft really hasn’t changed all that much recently, at least not in that way. There’s a good chance we draft someone high that we didn’t bring in beforehand.

        • Julien Bélair

          I guess we’ll see thursday !

          • Gunnar Martin

Yep can’t wait. It should be a pretty fun one to watch.

    • Gunnar Martin

Haha yes! Maybe I should have looked down at the comments before I posted… Oh well. Great minds think alike, I guess :)

  • Edgar_Avi

I think the Chargers should pick up Fuller in the 1st ..trade up to get Van Noy in the 2nd(for a 4th round pick) and then use the 3rd round pick to get either a NT OR WR.

    • Julien Bélair

If he is there Fuller is the best choice. Easy selection

      • Sergio Quintero

He fits all the boxes, scheme fit, measurables, good player, I’m getting the feeling he wont be there Philly and Cincy have needs at corner.

        • Julien Bélair

we have to hope that Cincy wants to gamble on Roby

          • Sergio Quintero

            Geography pushes Cincy to Roby??

          • Julien Bélair

ORRRRRR we trade up with the Packers and give them a 4th round pick and pick Fuller in front of the Eagles

          • Sergio Quintero

I think a trade down with QB teams in the 2nd is more probable, let it be thursday now, these 2 extra weeks is ridiculous.

          • Julien Bélair

I know right ? I like the fact that Telesco was against it !

Damn I seems to be the only one who wants us to trade up in this draft

          • Sergio Quintero

Roster needs an infusion of talent, they probably overachieved, thus they need as many draft picks as they can get.

I already told you the only 2 players I would trade up for are Khalil Mack & Sammie Watkins, and the price would be ridiculous.

          • Julien Bélair

I know but look at our 4th rounder in the last 10 years…. No so good … I’m willing to give up a 4th rounder for a #1 corner like Fuller

          • Sergio Quintero

I like Fuller a lot, I have been on the Fuller/Verrett bandwagon the longest time, so you don’t have to sell me on the guy.

You were saying that teams don’t fear throwing at Verrett, if he can cover, that kind is the point, if you think a corner can cover he gets ball thrown his way, you expect him to force an incompletion, tip passes and ideally force INT’s, I think Verrett vertical makes him play like he’s 5’11-6’0, he doesn’t play like a tall corner like Sherman but even big receivers will have trouble winning over the top, his greatest weakness may be against WR that play comeback routes and that can box him out, but the guy does have 4.35 speed, the throw better be perfect or the QB exposes himself to an INT.

          • Julien Bélair

That’s right! Don’t worry Verrett is my guy since january. People always compare him to grimes or finnegan … Grimes was undrafted and Finnegan was a seventh round pick. They certainly showed that you can be small and pretty good but in the first round… this is just scary.

But hey if we pick Verrett in the first I’ll be very happy anyway….it’s just some pre draft talks

          • SDmarm17

Years past do not count. A different Era has begun!
I think moving up in the first round would be a mistake. Too much depth this year.

  • vct

Is Leon Sandcastle available at #25?

    • Sergio Quintero

If not Jerry Ricecakes and his extraordinary hands might be there as well.

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

If the draft started with Su’a Filo and then Van Noy in the 2nd I would be seriously happy. I know we need CB’s but we can get one in any round really, the 2 guys I just mentioned would be my ideal 1st and 2nd.

    • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

I doubt the Filo man makes it past the Chiefs though.

    • Gunnar Martin

I would cry if that happened. From joy. Man, Telesco would really impress me if he got both of them. Knock on wood!

  • Padraigh Keogh

I hope that we trade back in the first on Thursday. Would be great to have 2 second and 2 third round picks. Are the chances of this happening high if all the CBs are gone?

    • Sergio Quintero

If the teams in the 2nd fall in love with certain QB its quite probable.

  • Diegoblue

My first choice would be Nix. It takes a longer time for CBs to develop plus its a very deep position. Since we are staying in the 3-4 we need that dominate NT that can push the pile back..occupy multiple blockers freeing up our LBs to do what they have to do… which is create pressure. We can have the greatest CBs in the world but if there is no pressure they won’t be able to cover any receiver in the league. Just my 2cents

  • Padraigh Keogh

Very few mock drafts seems to be addressing the one position we will need as of next year… the new Hardwick. Will we draft a center/guard or leave that position till next year’s free agency?

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i think we pick up someone late and develop him during the year

    • Parker Richardson

I totally agree that that is something that needs to be addressed this draft! We can’t afford to have a bad offensive line in the year after next because we are waiting on the development of a rookie. With all of the young players we have now and with a good draft this year we will be poised to make a real run in 2015! But if the line takes a step back with the loss of Hardwick that will really be a downfall.

  • Eli Rodriguez

I can Def see our Draft now going like this. TT drafted players last year that he brought in.
    1st Verret
    2nd Van Noy
3rd Adams or Marcus Martin depending on who’s still available.

  • Gunnar Martin

Well the Great and Powerful LT didn’t get a pre-draft visit from San Diego, so I wouldn’t look too much into it. Just because they don’t bring in a guy doesn’t mean they definitely won’t take him.

  • Mauricio Vargas

I think they are bringing these guys in for closer examination. Anthony Barr is an interesting prospect that perhaps needed Coach Joe Barry’s attention to give the thumbs up if Barr does fall to 25. The same with Roby and Verrett. Both are fringe 1st round picks with considerable risks. Size with Verrett and demeanor with Roby. The same with Sua-Filo. How good of an offensive guard is he to consider him at 25. Late round 1st round picks are more hit and miss (i.e., Buster Davis, Antione Cason) and dangerous while it seems that 2nd and 3rd round picks are picked up for their value because they dropped, i.e., Te’o and Allen. There is more inherent risk for those late first rounders while the 2nd and 3rd round picks tend to exceed our expectation. I would not be against the idea of trading down to pick up solid 2nd round talent like Van Noy, Nix (if he is available top of second round), or Desir. With the excellent coaching staff in place, and having coachable players that are hungry and willing to learn, I can see these players rising to a higher caliber much like Butler and Addai have started proving themselves.
