San Diego Chargers GM Tom Telesco’s Approach Going Into NFL Draft

Tom Telesco went in front of the media today to talk about the upcoming draft and other things football. He shared a lot of insight on his approach going into the draft.

Going into the draft at pick 25, he believes that the team needs to be flexible. He has no idea on what the team will do at pick 25 since he isn’t sure who will be available. They have to be willing to see all kinds of things happen before pick 25 because the player that they want might not be there. The team has to be willing to move out of that spot if the opportunity presents itself.

The team doesn’t rank the team needs 1,2 3 going into the draft and would rather rank the prospects that are on the board. If the team was looking at team needs going into the draft last season, then we wouldn’t have Keenan Allen on the roster.

The team has Malcom Floyd on their depth chart right now, but the team is not afraid of adding another receiver to the roster. “The more the merrier.” Getting more weapons for Philip Rivers is always a good thing.

Telesco does look at the NFL Mock drafts from certain people. It gives him an idea on where players could land and can give him a little insight on who will be available when their selection is up.

The press conference should be available up on Chargers.com soon, but those were some of the highlights.

Watch Telesco surprise us all when drafts either a TE, RB, QB or MLB. I know he is gonna do it. I can feel it haha

hahahaha… we would lose our minds

      • Nick Mansoor

AMEN, if that happens I will literally jump out of my seat on draft day and question Telesco loudly in front of my family hahaha

        • arnie

Like we did when he took a RT and not a LT?

Omg I went insane when he picked Fluker. I was mad until the next day. I really wanted vaccarro but Fluker ending up being the best tackle prospect out of all the tackles even tho he’s a right tackle. I wouldn’t want any1 else.

i wanted vaccaro also… still wouldn’t have been a bad selection.

I Agree, however Steve Williams was a good pick up to address the issue.
This is why i won’t be mad when they don’t a take CB in the 1st.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

we dont know that about steve williams yet

          • Nick Mansoor

Keenan Allen said Steve Willams the only CB that actually gave him a challenge when they played at CAL. Sounds promising.

          • arnie

…in the NFL we don’t. He looked pretty impressive at the combine and on tape. Yet we are all hear swearing up an down Verret, an Roby are going to be by leaps and bounds better prospects?
Context. There is a good, young CB on the roster, just making the case it is not a “high” priority they take on at #25.

          • Julien Bélair

            I wanted Lotulelei badly

          • Nick Mansoor

yeah i was pretty pissed with our first 2 picks in last years draft for like a good weeks haha.

      • Rob Base

        Go insane for sure!

Its funny how damn worked up we get about the draft picks. Last year was the first time I watched the draft since Larry English in the first round. I will admit my head almost exploded with the Fluker pick, followed up with Teo… I will watch again this year, but keep the sedatives close at hand!!!

Hey Ernie are we gonna have an open thread for the draft?

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      yes sir

  • Diegoblue

I just hope we get the BPA available that can help our team.. It seems that the chips fall into place when you approach the draft that way

  • ECAVILLE/Ace of Spades

I can see Telesco picking a Safety like HaHaDix, or MLB Moseley if available. Players that were predicted to be gone within the first 10 picks Telesco could stick to the trenches too with BPA on the front lines.

01/03/14 – North Dakota State’s Brock Jensen isn’t often mentioned among the top quarterbacks in college football, or even his own division. His coach cites one quality that he believes will earn him a shot at the pros: Jensen wins. Jensen has won more games than any other quarterback in the history of the Football Championship Subdivision, formerly known as Division I-AA. He needs one more victory in this weekend’s FCS title game against Towson to give the Bison their third straight national title.

    so what do you think??????????
