San Diego Chargers Met With USC C Marcus Martin

Here is the scouting report on Martin from CBS Sports:

STRENGTHS: Only a third-year collegiate player but already boasts the frame of an NFL interior lineman, possessing the naturally thick build conducive to playing in the trenches. Good quickness off the snap, showing the ability to get to the second level as well as seal defenders to create running lanes.
Possesses good core flexibility and natural knee bend to help him anchor against bull rushes. Slides well laterally to mirror pass rushers and keeps his head on a swivel to help teammates.

Plays with some nastiness. Plays to the whistle and isn’t opposed to getting an extra shot in as the whistle blows. A good athlete whose flaws are coachable, suggesting that his best football is still ahead of him.

WEAKNESSES: Only has one year of starting experience at center and is likely to remain at this position in the NFL due to his less than ideal height. Plays very low, which gives him a natural leverage advantage but also makes him prone to effective swim moves from taller defenders. Relies on his punch too much, over-extending and getting himself off-balance.

Spends too much time on the ground because he attempts to knock defenders over rather than simply mirroring them or working to sustain his blocks. Can be a step late in reacting to surprise blitzes. Good quickness to the second level but doesn’t redirect well.

Nearly forgot we need a Centre in the draft. Hope get one in the 3rd round.

  • Parker Richardson

This would be an awesome pick! He manhandled Nix in their game against ND

would be such a good selection

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

I just hope we don’t get both of them lol

          when amazing happens

    • Sergio Quintero

Saw that game, he gave Nix a serious lesson, completely outplayed him, how much was it bad knee, how much is it level of play?

  • arnie

This would be a good pick as well. Having an eye on the future is key to continued success. I could see this kid in the second round, however if he’s still there in the 3rd or 4th and they haven’t addressed the O-line, take him.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i would love this guy in the 2nd round

      • arnie

Agreed. Like i stated else where we already have Steve Williams at CB, so that position is not in dire straights to have. If anything NT in the first, then this guy…..

        • BoltNative

If we could pick up this guy in the 3rd round after addressing CB, NT needs in the 1st & 2nd then I would be ecstatic!

          • arnie

The Chargers addressed the need of CB last season, and this draft is stacked with CB. Offensive and defensive linemen are not as plentiful.
it’s not “where” you draft, but “who” you draft. Case in point, Richard Sherman was taken in the 5th round.

        Absolutely.

  • Gunnar Martin

If we don’t get Su’a-Filo in the first, this would be my next favorite way to go. It’d be nice knowing we wouldn’t really have to worry about center next offseason.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

would be so solid with either player

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

I want me some Su’a Filo in the 1st!

    • John Trizonka Kinney

Why not get them both? :)
They dont need to start right away… and a few players will get hurt along that starting front… they always do… then boom… throw these big guys in there and never miss a beat.

A couple years ago or offensive line was complete trash, then we drafted Fluker… but thats only one player out of 5 Oline positions that is a long term fix

      I WANT O’LINEMEN Lol

  • gpack17

We also brought it receiver Eric Thomas from Troy for a workout…likely undrafted free agent..watching some game tape the kid looks like a stud..seems like he doesn’t go all out on every play..probably because he plays at troy..but at the next level going 100 percent i think he could be a stud..

Off topic, here’s a link to a podcast about picks 25-29 that Mel Kiper and Todd McShay had, they open with the chargers, in particular they talk about the corners, and the value of Nose Tackle from a draft perspective, you can listen to it on this link:

    • Julien Bélair

you guys need to stop listening to Mel Kiper

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

someone needs to stop paying him.. then i can stop

        • Julien Bélair

well if everybody stop listening to him he will loose his job

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

hahahhahaha… shouldnt he lose his job since we all dont trust that fool anyway

          • Julien Bélair

Nop because even with all the critics he stills entertain us…. just like Matt Miller and his players ranking ;)

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

its true… ugh… i cant help but look… even though i know it is a terrible idea.

          • Julien Bélair

haha same here. But now I just absolutely no expectations when I look it up

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

    Yes please = )

On another note… Hoping Louis Nix falls to us this year = Hoping Lane Johnson would fall to us last year. I just don’t see it happening, barring an EXTREMELY unusual set of circumstances, which would raise red flags for me across the board.
