Cody Latimer Hype Has Him Climbing to 1st Round. Should Chargers Consider In the 1st?

The buzz on Cody Latimer has him skyrocketing up to the first round in the draft. His combination of speed and size has all the scouts talking about his skills and he is making an epic rise up draft boards.

Should the Chargers consider taking him in the first round of the draft? The Chargers have shown their interest in the young player with Tom Telesco attending his Pro Day and by having him come down to the facility for a visit. The team is interested in selecting the receiver in the draft, but is Latimer worth our first round draft pick? Is he worth passing up on a defensive player?

With all the talent in the NFL Draft at wide receiver, the Chargers should wait till later in the draft in order to make a move for a receiver. At least later to make a move on Latimer. There should be better receivers available in the first round when the Chargers select and Latimer seems to be a better value on Day 2 of the draft. If Latimer is the best receiver on the board, then we should have some nice options to select for the defense.

Would you want the Chargers to take Cody Latimer with the first round selection?

No way.. He’s good but the WR position is the deepest in the draft IMO..

  • Marcel West-Bailey

Well…time to look at another receiver.

    • tubbs45

Totally agree! He is good but that taters a little too hot to handle…

    • Alter Ego

phhhht…really Marcel? Not in the first two rounds …lord no.
      Try again.

      • Marcel West-Bailey

        What?

        • Alter Ego

No to picking a WR in the first two rounds – that would be a bad choice..
3rd round – only if its a steal…better for the team.

          • Marcel West-Bailey

I know. That’s why I said we should look for another receiver. If Lattimer is going to go as high as some people think he will (1-2 round) then we need to look for someone else.

          • Alter Ego

            Sorry…my bad. Misunderstood.

  • philiprules

    no

  • Calman21

    nope, look for another one.

  • gpack17

have a feeling benjamin might slip to us in round 2 now..there are a ton of corners and receivers that are going to be taken in round 1 and the beginning of round 2..

    • Derek

but do we want his bs? he showed up to the pro day 15lbs overweight, then stopped workout because “he’s tired” i get protecting urself from injury but 15lbs durring interview season? tells me he’s on break when he should be trying to better himself…

      • Sergio Quintero

That sounds like a guy who will eat himself into the TE position.

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

I started a new Madden franchise and created Verrett – Van Noy – Latimer just for kicks before the draft (did it last year with 3 guys and created Te’o before we got him), I use Latimer all over the field and teams 2nd 3rd 4th CB’s can’t cover him (having Allen/Royal/Latimer/Green/Gates on the field at the same time is a absolute nightmare for defense’s and it’s quite fun. Rivers broke his ribs 3 games in on a sack given up by Dunlop (I traded a future 2nd rounder to the Pats for Ryan Mallett and he’s been a force with this group of receivers).
Mathews got injured in the 5th game out for 6 games, then Weddle went down in the same game for 4 games lol sounds like real Charger Football. Anywho it’s fun and gives me something to do =p

  • Ryan Hayes

I feel that the Chargers should try to get a WR deeper into the draft. The obvious need for the Chargers in a Cornerback or a Defensive Tackle in the first round. I think San Diego needs to draft the stud TCU Cornerback and draft the best option out of the Wide Receiver or Defensive Tackle in the second and third round.

  • tonyloc1970 .

NO. Not at pick 25. There are much more pressing needs for the team. I do think we will pick up a receiver at some point (3-4 round), but besides that I believe that V. Brown is going to have a come up year and suprise us all.

    • Derek

i hope so… i dont think he has the quick twitch muscle to burst off the line n get open. our offense may not have room for him except as a 4th wr. reguardless i think we need a wr by 3rd rd and since that clemson guard tore his acl we can take him in the 4th

  • tubbs45

Love the hype that teams create to scare/bluff other teams. NFL prime time drama at its finest. I dont think he goes any higher than the second round, but we shall see!!!

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

You know those expert NFL Total Access hosts would have us taking Latimer at 25, if they could… while they aren’t busy raping chicks, that is. I never liked Sharper. Such a d-bag!!! Can you believe that s**t Tubbs?

  • esco charger

I been saying if barr slips to us at 25 then take him but I doubt he will be there if not we take nix I think fuller will be gone by the time we pick with nix not only does our run defense get better he takes on blockers meaning the edge rushers get a lot more one on one match ups it also means our inside linebackers are free to roam around but the best part about taking nix is that weddle doesn’t need to help in the box and is allowed to make plays in the back field instantly helping our secondary I think we should take mcgill, sjb,or dessir in the third there is so many CB in this class u can even get Gaines in the 4th plus a rookie CB does not come into the league shutting their side of the field down it takes a year or two to develop them we need impact players now not two years from now

    • Sergio Quintero

If Barr is there, then you take him, even lacking the instincts of someone who has played defense for most of his life, he was a double digit sack guy, with 20 tackles for loss.

Have him play behind Freeney this year, let Dwight bring some wisdom to Ingram & Barr.

      • esco charger

I hope he falls in our laps serg with good pass rush u don’t always need the best corners

        • Sergio Quintero

Pagano’s system is based on pass rush, its no accident that the points per game improved as soon as Ingram was available.

The off man zone coverage the chargers run is more about being a student of the game recognizing routes and making plays on the ball, its a scheme where guys like Aeneas Williams & Ronde Barber are the prototype instinctive corners.

      • Alter Ego

Yup – Yup and Yup…normally I have disdain for your posts – this isn’t one of them…rare – but we are on the same side. Hope it pans out if we miss on Nix – NT is key though.

    • Alter Ego

Thumbs up Esco…nice pointed piece of wisdom. I concur.

  • philiprules

Off topic but….how about a post for a poll/reasons on which “guaranteed 1st rounder” has the biggest potential for bust. The QBs excepted…..that’s just easy pickens.

  • RoyalChargers

Not with the 25th pick. We will find a quarterback needy team to trade with. Jacksonville Houston Cleveland. One of those teams will be our trade partner and from there the talent we select will be more than good enough for this roster. Many possibilities but I don’t expect a bad pick thru the first 3 rounds. We’ve evaluated pass rushers wide receivers offensive guards corner backs and defensive tackles. They are stars at all positions in this draft. I have my favorites (Roby Van Noy Marcus Smith, Louis Nix also but only with the 57th pick due to his knee injuries) I think everyone does but in the end its not like we are looking at position or prospects that won’t fill an immediate need for now and the future. It’s all about coaching. If we didn’t have good coaches that’s showing promise of being great. I would be worried who we choose. We don’t so I just hope they choose bradley roby and marcus smith or kyle van noy.

    Brooklyn Chargers fan 4 life

    • Alter Ego

      Nix is our guy.

      • RoyalChargers

        I’m hoping it’s with the 57th pick

  • BlueBoltFan

The Chargers definitely should NOT pick him at #25.

With Latimer as well as Donte Moncrief, Jordan Matthews, Davante Adams, Allen Robinson, and Martavis Bryant that’s SIX receivers with very similar height/weight/speed and skill sets to choose from. Plus, there are other receivers in this draft such as Josh Huff, Paul Richardson, and Bruce Ellington, that offer different skill sets and possibilities that could also be very effective.

There is no reason to reach for ANY wide receiver in this draft. At all.

  • Nick Mansoor

Aaaaaaaaand their goes Latimer off my list. Back to the draft board.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Thankfully, he was never on my list. Anytime Chris Hansen from Bleacher Report writes an in depth article about a draft prospect that the Chargers should take, I tune out. Dude is never right.. lol.. he IS a Raider fan, after all ; )

  • Derek

any team taking him in the first expecting him to contribute must have mel kiper as their head scout. he’s on the same level as benjamin, both are project wr’s that need coaching and a good qb. both can make contested catches but struggle with route reading & running. he may be a diamond in the rough but requires more polish than a 2nd rd reciever should unless you design him specific plays like cordelle patterson.

    • Julien Bélair

He is way ahead of Benjamin… Benjamin is 23 years old and doesn’t dominate in college. Latimer is 21 and you just can see the potential. With that being said he is not a first rounder. More like a late second imo.

      • Derek

Wtf!?!? I thought Benjamin was a college sophomore!!! Wow then he has no excuse for his stats. I’m hesitant to say latimore is a 2nd rder even because of his competition. Was he dominant either? I have just seen a few of his games. He has potential with his height speed n strong hands but free agency and practice squads are full of those

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

benjamin had to go back for 2 years of school when he was younger.

        • Julien Bélair

Well defenetly not a first round pick

  • Julien Bélair

Just draft Adams, Allen, Brynat or Montcrief in the second or third round. Not first round Wr…. especially not Latimer

    • Sergio Quintero

They will find value in 2-3 round staying pat, so yeah one or several of the guys you mentioned should be there.

    • Diegoblue

      I agree

  • Alter Ego

    No…defense.

  • Sergio Quintero

Loved him as a 3rd round pick, I figured that they probably had to take him in the 2nd with they hype he had been getting I was okay but didn’t love that, in the 1st he’s not value, he’s not in Beckham/Cooks class.

The other player rising like crazy is Philip Gaines, seems to be a consensus late 2nd to early 3rd round pick, so any expectation to see him after 3rd round seems completely unreasonable, and he looks like less than 50% odds at being available for pick 89.

    • Diegoblue

I like Gaines underrated CB.. 4.38 in 40 cant coach speed. He’s fluid in his change of directions

      • Sergio Quintero

Kiper has him going 56th to the 49ers one pick ahead of the chargers in the 2nd round.

        • Diegoblue

I’m hoping he slips for my own selfishness ..

        • Diegoblue

What do you think of Steve Williams?? I’m hoping he might surprise.. He mos def has the speed around a 4.3 I believe

          • Sergio Quintero

The one game I saw in the preseason I thought he had the ball skills of any of the corners, and the speed was for real.

I thought the only game I saw that he could play outside, I read that scouts thought he could have been a 1-2 rounder had he stayed in school another year.

I would let him play outside in the preseason until he proves he can’t play there.

          • Diegoblue

Well let’s hope he can play like a 1st or 2nd rounder .. Thanks for the report brother

  • Daniel Sutter

No way is he a first rd talent…

  • davacho

Not about hype. More curious about the non media darlings slipping to us in later rounds… Hype may be real, but is the player?
