The San Diego Chargers exercised their 5th year option on DE Corey Liuget today and they will not have him under contract up until 2015, per Michael Gehlken. Liuget is one of those players that showed a ton of potential a couple of seasons ago, but he needs to consistently play at that level in the next couple of seasons. A couple of seasons ago, he was one of the top 3-4 defensive ends in the game and was not getting the love from the national media that he should have received. Last season he struggled a bit.
Liuget was best when he had a big nose tackle in the middle of the defense clogging up a couple of blockers. Liuget received more double teams last season without a strong presence in the middle and struggled at times. He can get off of one blocker and fill his gaps, but trying to stand up a couple of guys and cover his gaps was not his game.
Liuget will have more pass rushers around him in this coming season and the team could look to add another big nose tackle in the middle of the defense from the draft. Having Liuget under contract for another season should be a solid investment from the team. Tom Telesco continues to keep his talent on the roster.
