49ers RB LaMichael James Is On The Trade Block. Would Make A Nice Returner

San Francisco 49ers RB LaMichael James is on the trading block and he is someone that would be a nice fit for the San Diego Chargers. He wouldn’t get many opportunities as a running back in his initial season on the roster, but he would be able to help immediately on special teams. He would be an impact player as a kick returner and punt returner for the team.

He could then be of use in the following season as a running back. Danny Woodhead is signed to the end of this coming season, but will become a free agent at the end of the year. If he were to walk, the team could use James in that Woodhead role on offense.

The biggest question for James is his cost. What will the 49ers be asking for as compensation? If the 49ers want anything more than a late round draft selection, then the Chargers should just look in another direction. The market for running backs have dipped tremendously in the last season and there are different options that can be picked up later in the draft for that special teams role. LaMichael James would be a nice player to pick up, but a player like DeAnthony Thomas could be picked up later in the draft as well.

True. They could get a young guy in the draft for less. However, LaMichael brings experience and is still young. the other side if they looking to trade him, he’s either just a role player, or they are looking to make room on the roster, to see who takes the bait.

    • Eli Rodriguez

I’ll take James over Thomas. Thomas doesn’t have the weight to be a running back.

      • gpack17

i’d actually take thomas..yes he doesnt have the weight to be a running back but he played some slot receiver much like percy harvin did at florida…

        • Eli Rodriguez

With him not having any bulk I can just see him getting injured alot.

          • arnie

I’m thinking he could take up the place that Ronnie Brown is in.

  • Daryl Peek

Pass, the team already has the RB position set. ST’er may be on roster in Tobias Harris. Best to no spend anything on James IMO.

  • Calman21

He has a good 5 years of returning left 6 or 7th might be worth it.

  • Eli Rodriguez

I’m pretty sure he wants to leave the 49ers because he wants to be more involved in the offense not just a return guy. I don’t think we could use him in the offense until woodhead is gone. He could be used as a Sproles back. I wouldn’t do it unless it’s a low pick.

Is he even that good of a running back when he does play? My buddy is a huge SF fan so I watched a lot of games, and never saw him make much of an impact… and then there is that huge fumble he had in the Super Bowl. I think the niners don’t think he is good enough, or they would keep him. I think the same thing. Some desperate team will take him off of their hands, and the niners will profit… yet again.

  • serg21

    They want a 3 or 2nd round pick I think I read

    • Eli Rodriguez

He not worth that at all. Sproles was traded for a 5th and he is very productive. I doubt they get a high pick for him.

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

        exactly

        • Eli Rodriguez

I’d give up a 7th pick for him.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

            That would be ok.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

      Bwahaha.. ridonkulous

  • Gunnar Martin

I knew it was a wasted pick for them the second I found out he was going there. James was just stuck behind a really solid stock of running backs. I would love to have him, but it’s a no for me now that we have Woodhead. Hopefully he ends up somewhere he’ll get the touches he deserves.

    • Eli Rodriguez

I mean we could just have him wait a season. If Mathews gets hurt we could probably use another back. I just wouldn’t use a high pick.

    • Diegoblue

They wasted a 2nd rounder on him right ?

      • Gunnar Martin

        Yep. 61st overall

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I don’t really think he is that good, Gunnar.. quite honestly

      • Gunnar Martin

Probably not in the NFL. But dang, he was a beast at Oregon. He was so fun to watch. It’s too bad that kind of stuff doesn’t translate great to the next level. I’ll admit, I will be pretty surprised if he ever gets to play a legitimate role as a running back in his career.

  • tubbs45

Meh… it would resolve the KR/PR with allen backing up on PRs. But I would rather have allen focus on receiving and not get hurt returning. Bet yah the Eagles jump on that trade…

  • Daniel Sutter

If we could get him for 6 or 7 then he would be better value for us but no way SF will get the 2nd or 3rd they apparently want.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      getting a 2nd or 3rd is crazy

      • cameronmm

They would be extremely lucky to get a 5th round pick for him.

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

No… they are just smart.. there always seems to be some desperate sucker out there, trying to help the niners get even more dominant. Why wouldn’t they ask for that?

    • Diegoblue

      They must crazy..

  • Charger2139

I say we draft De’anthony or Archer in the 5th/6th round. And just keep them for kickoff and punts then we could extend wood heads contract and keep him as our third down back! I don’t want to fall back into out Aj way and let our good players leave! To me Woodhead is a playmaker and a big part out are offense!

    • Rob Base

Chandler Jones in the 6th or 7th rd

      • Charger2139

The reciever of out San Jose State? He’s pretty good! If Thomas and archer are gone if defiantly take him in the 6th/7th!

        • Rob Base

Yes the dude is clutch. His stock is rising after his pro day. He could be a steal in the 6 or 7th. Also another Burner is Jalen Saunders possible 5th or 6th.

          • Charger2139

Ya that’s where I heard about jones I was watching there quarterback and they just kept talking about jones! lol, I just watched a video on Saunders and I could picture that dude in blue and yellow! We need that kind of speed!

  • Chris Cutty

Don’t we still have Kerwyn Williams on the practice squad? He was supposed to be the next Sproles.

  • Diegoblue

    Get DeAnthony Thomas instead

  • Steve Valadez

I’ll give them a 6th rounder, a bag of footballs, and a lottery scratcher from my local 7-11

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

seems like we are giving too much… keep the bag of footballs

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Ya know… I say pass on that one. No thanks.

    • arnie

Just making conversation before the draft…

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I get it. I just never thought James was that good in S.F. so I’m not surprised they are tying to trade him. We already have three solid guys in the backfield. I would rather see us pick up a kick returner in the draft.. preferably a wide receiver (or cornerback, if we trade up for Gilbert.. Lol). I was actually an advocate for the Chargers getting James in the draft. He hasn’t played as well as i expected.

        • Julien Bélair

Trade up for Gilbert hehe! I agree on thr late round wr or cb who can do returns. I like acher more than thomas though

  • Nick Mansoor

Man I loved James back in his days at Oregon, but he wants to start we have no room for him on this roster until Woodhead or Mathews leave
