Poll: Which Corner Should the Chargers Select?

A lot of the Bolt Beaters have been doing their homework on the possible corners that the team should select in the first round. The draft is so far away that we have looked at all these players over and over and over and over and over and over again. We have been running videos on each of these players till it is making us sick.

It feels like it is time to put this thing up for a vote on which corner the Bolt Beaters would like the Chargers to take in the first round. This post will just be about the corners. We will vote on some of the other positions at another time. We will then come back and run a vote again as we get closer to the draft in order to see if the hype train has changed your minds.

Here are the different prospects for the first round:

Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State
A lot of analysts feel that Gilbert will be the first corner off of the board because of his combination of size and speed. Does his tape match that athleticism though?

Darqueze Dennard, CB, Michigan State
He was thought of as the top corner going into the draft, but Gilbert has jumped him for that position. Still one of the best available and many believe he will not be available when the Chargers select.

Kyle Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech
Fuller is a physical defender and is great in run support. He has been rising up draft boards of late.

Jason Verrett, CB, TCU
Remember the last time the Chargers took a player from TCU? Verrett doesn’t have the ideal size at corner, but he is a solid defender.

Bradley Roby, CB, Ohio State
The Chargers have brought in Roby for a visit and have shown interest in him. He had a down season last year, but  has all the tools that can make a good corner.

There are all the possibilities for the Chargers in the first round. If all those players are taken by the time the Chargers select, then we are going to have to add someone at a different position. It would almost be like the situation with D.J. Fluker in the first round. We wanted a left tackle, but decided to take a right tackle after all the good ones were off of the board.

Cast your votes. Let’s see who the Bolt Beaters feel should be the Chargers target in round 1.

Which corner would you like the Chargers to take in the first round?

Ok my choice is Jason verrett he’s to me the most physical next is fuller

    • Derek

he wont be able to be as physical when the wr’s have 15-20 lbs on him.

  • Julien Bélair

    Gilbert

  • Brett M

    Gilbert

  • Tazzster

Gilbert, but I don’t think he will be there. If he is still on the board at 15, we should be thinking about trading up.

  • navw21

I voted for Fuller just because I don’t think the Gilbert or Dennard will be there. But if all were there I would select them like they are listed in the above order.

    • philiprules

      Same for me

  • gpack17

none of them..id wait and get a corner in round 2-4

  • Marcel West-Bailey

    All of them

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      hahaha…. i wish

  • Cooper

Take the BPA and not reach on a corner. I know the secondary sucks, but the defense as whole sucked. If I was looking for an instant impact on defense I would look at Dline or an OLB.

  • Sergio Quintero

Super close between Fuller & Verrett, considering the chargers have Steve Williams, and Verrett is so similar to that, I’ll go with Fuller, but either I’m cool with.

Dennard & Gilbert should be long gone, Roby seems a little of character for Telesco who seems to favor production over ceiling.

  • Derek

my knock on fuller is can we count on him for a whole season? verret has played and done the combine hurt, roby has too, i think even dennard had a surgery after the combine. fuller plays well but i dont think he will be able to tough it out durring those games where we need him. not caling him a crybaby just saying the other guys show more toughness than him and i think that should be considered.

  • Matt

I would go in order: Dennard (Best production) > Gilbert (Cromartie type) > Roby(Nasty Corner but questionable attitude) > Verett(great combine but might be exploited for shortness) > Fuller(All around with average speed)

    • Sergio Quintero

A consideration with Roby has to be the bad history the chargers have in developing corners and making them reach elite potential, in the last decade the chargers have had one pro bowl corner in Cromartie. And according to the stat heads at Pro football focus only 2 corners rated in the top 30 for a year (Cromartie ’07, Cason ’09).

Considering the chargers history I would want one as close to a finished product as possible, because the chargers have no history of success at developing corners.

      • Julien Bélair

We made some changes in the coaching staff though but I agree we need elite not project

        • Sergio Quintero

Until I see the chargers develop an elite corner I’ll say they can’t, at no point in the last 25 years as a fan have I ever thought “Damn they are really good at developing corners, and everybody on the roster has excellent technique”, just looks at the Seahawks their 3-4 corners were probably better than the starters here.

          • Julien Bélair

I agree with you about the Chargers. But don’t get me started on the Seahawks corners. They are just holding all the time without getting called. I hate them!

          • Sergio Quintero

Its brilliant what they do, games are not called by computers, if they were they would get called for holding on every play, they now there isn’t an official that has the guts to call it on every play, and they get away with murder because of it, don’t the hate player hate the game.

            Learn from teams, copy-paste Pagano!!

          • Julien Bélair

I think it’s cheap and I wouldn’t want our corners doing it. Sherman thinks he is thr best cb? Hahaha not even top 3

          • Marcel West-Bailey

            O.O

      • Matt

I also agree that the Chargers can’t develop their corners or take advantage of their skills scheme-wise. Can’t we just get Wade Philips back as our DC so he could shore up our pass rush again?

        • Sergio Quintero

Not a fan of Pagano but he’s here to stay, I can’t see the chargers succeeding and he being gone, I can’t see the miracle of this defense developing enough for him to be a head coach candidate.

        • julian vesga is chargerfan#21

          Thank you!!!

    • BoltNative

Dennard (too grabby and avg. speed), Gilbert (plays off too much), Roby (quite possibly… but may be a project), Verrett (definitely! extremely fast, strong, skillful tough competitor, but short height), Fuller (quite possibly, slightly above avg. speed, needs to work on strength).

So, they either pick Verrett in the 1st (Fuller if Verrett not available) and hope for either DaQuan Jones, McCullers, or Deandre Coleman in the second. Or, if Nix is available in the 1st then pick him and hope any of the aforementioned CBs are available (which they won’t be) or get Keith McGill, Rashaad Reynolds, Marqueston Huff, or Dontae Johnson (in that order) in the 2nd.

  • Rob Base

Fuller is my vote but I still like Rashaad Reynolds though.

    • Julien Bélair

      Yep good second round

  • Alter Ego

Only Gilbert or Dennard – if they are gone as expected…no reaching – take Nix DT instead.

  • RZ

They’re going pass rusher in the 1st

  • Anthony95

Of this list: Gilbert – Dennard – Fuller – Roby – Verrett

However, I prefer to not grab a first round CB. Its such a deep position in this draft that in round 2, 3, or even 4th round.

  • Nick Mansoor

Gilbert, Fuller, Verrett. Jean Baptiste is gonna be a huge sleeper tho

    • Anthony95

Really intrigued by Jean Baptiste and Desir as well. Round 2 – 4

      • Nick Mansoor

        Agreed

      • Daniel Sutter

I personally would take 2 CBs in the first three rounds if it was up to me. Fuller/Dennard and Desir/SJB. I think the later two could even end up being the top CBs when we look back in a few years…

        • Daniel Sutter

          Ran one of the FanSpeak mocks and came away;
          1)Kyle Fuller CB
2)SJB-CB (reached a little to get him before he was off the board)
          3) Marcus Smith DE/OLB
          4) Dakota Dozier G
          5) Bandon Coleman WR
          6) Zack Kerr DT
          7) Kevin Norwood WR

          • Sergio Quintero

Nice draft Daniel, I would take a OG or OLB in the 2nd and get the extra CB somewhere between 4-6.

          • Daniel Sutter

Thought about that too but I just couldnt pass up SJB cuz I just like him too much lol.

          • Sergio Quintero

My guys: Lattimer at around round 3-4 and Zach Kerr NT Delaware anywhere from round 4-7 I could justify it (love the highlight tape on this guy).

I would love to see Barr magically drop to 25, but 11-16 seems to his range.

          • Daniel Sutter

I think Kerr is the prospect I want plugging the center of our D. Great talent and a great leader.

          • Anthony95

Kerr in RD 6 is fine but he seems like a prospect type guy not a plug and play Day 1. 2 start prospect out of HS and played against weaker competition. We need a day 1 or 2 pick at NT to clog the middle and open up Reyes, Liuget, and our LBs.

At CB we absolutely need a guy as a true #1, as i said above, our DBs were horrible last year but got better when Cox was pulled. That was without Williams who will be healthy. Need just 1 CB (2 wastes a pick to fill other holes as we need: OG, NT, CB, WR, pass rusher, C, & maybe a TE would be nice to prepare for replacing Gates.

        • Anthony95

We don’t need 2 CBs. We have Williams coming back from injury who will man the slot and Wright who will man #2 CB spot.

So, one CB and we will be fine. If we grab another in RD 5-7 as a flier that is fine also.

          • Daniel Sutter

These guys are just too talented. May even provide Wight competition and possibly take the starting gig from him. Our secondary was so poor that we needto upgrade so why not take two..

  • gpack17

I am banking on them either getting a Sua Filo or Nix in round 1..

    • Anthony95

Yep or trading out of round 1 and gaining picks in RD 2 and 3.

    • jamfed

      NIX in the 1st!!!!

  • jamfed

I hope the Chargers wait on the CB’s. There are some good prospects in the 3rd, 4th and 5th round. I’ll take Keith McGill, CB, Utah in the 3rd round (Nix in the 1st, maybe a WR or OT in the 2nd)

    • Joel Ayala

I’m really thinking Nixs is gonna be our pick in the first.

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I would trade up for Gilbert. He can return kicks, and is a sure thing… kinda like Patrick Peterson was. I am not convinced that Telesco has a knack for picking defensive talent yet (Like Seattle did with Sherman), and San Diego has been awful at picking CB’s in general. I am just not sold on the Verrett’s and Fullers like everyone else. If you aren’t getting Gilbert.. you may as well take a later round project who is AT LEAST over 5’11, who had the measurables, and see where that goes. This draft reminds me a lot of the 2011 draft where Peterson and Sherman were selected, and we ended up getting Gilchrist in the second round. They already dicked around in Free Agency. I hope they get a taller CB, and don’t get suckered into taking yet another shrimp CB… no matter WHAT people keep shoving down their throats about how awesome they are. We need a taller CB. End of story. Everyone in our backfield ids no taller than I am, and showed on the field when they get torched by tall receivers.

    • julian vesga is chargerfan#21

Telesco and the Colts personnel picked Tim Jennings in the 2007 draft in a later round so I think telesco can find a good corner
He drafted players like Robert Mathis
Dwight Freeney, bob Sanders and Terrance newman

      • Stefanie Smith

Did Polian draft Mathis or did Telesco? Telesco was one of Polian’s staff, is how I understand it. And Telesco did not draft Freeney. They are almost the same age. Polian drafted Freeney.

It should read: Polian and the Colts’ personnel picked…(Telesco was one of the Colts’ personnel.) He is a newbie to the GM position.

        • julian vesga is chargerfan#21

I meant to say the Colts gm and personnel telesco was part of the draft personnel and has experience in picking defensive players because the colt have found good talent

    • julian vesga is chargerfan#21

How tall are you (unless if you’re being sarcastic)

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

        Six foot.

  • Edward Sherman

    Gilbert, Fuller.

  • yea yea

i like to see fuller at the top would really see him in blue and gold also like Brandon Coleman, Jeremiah Attaochu
