Top Available Defensive Tackles in Free Agency

Signs are pointing to the San Diego Chargers rolling with Sean Lissemore as the starter at the nose tackle position going into the 2014 season, but why wouldn’t the Chargers want to add some depth at the position? Why wouldn’t the Chargers want to add some competition to the position?

The team went into the 2013 season with Cam Thomas as the starter and there was nobody else on the roster that could compete for the gig until he started slipping. Lissmore stepped in and stole the job from him in the middle of the year, but the team should find someone that can compete for that starting gig right from training camp. There are a few veterans that are available that could push for some playing time.

Evan Silva listed his top defensive tackles that are available in free agency and the team should investigate what it will take to bring one of them onto the roster:

Sean Lissemore could be a solid player at the nose tackle spot, but it would be nice to bring in a vet that has handled the everyday duties that can come in and give the youngster a few more tips. I don’t mind if Lissemore is trusted with the job, I just think that there should be some insurance behind him.

Which one of the listed guys would you want to bring on?

thanks for looking out… just corrected it

      • Conor Cahill

in that case, probably only ryan picket or terrence cody. after the draft if they dont cost much

  • Julien Bélair

no one will be sign before the draft

    • Daniel Sutter

i agree julien. we will be quiet like last year and make our ‘splash’ through another solid draft and picking up the pieces after june 1st. next year we will have too much money not to make that FA cannon ball style splash.

      • Julien Bélair

and we will have the money to resign Liuget and mathews if we want to

        • Daniel Sutter

I think both are a given. This year shows us that RB arent getting huge checks anymore (for the most part anyways.) Mathews loves his PB too much to leave anyways lol.

  • powderBLUE801

I’m still not getting the link.

  • Sergio Quintero

If they wait till after the draft i’m sure they could get Kevin Williams pretty cheap.

    • Marcel West-Bailey

Lol Sergio, I’m reading the notes from the chat today with Gehlken. You apparently have an enemy, Alejandro. So it’s pretty safe we can drop the talk on a tackle? We’re going with Lissemore.

      • Sergio Quintero

Who knew I inspire enough bab mojo to get an enemy!!, yikes, less questions or more fluffy the chargers are awesome questions I guess?!?!

        • Marcel West-Bailey

Ha! I’m not sure if you saw it and you might be somewhat humored by it, there was a guy on there wondering if the Chargers may be moving to Tijuana

          • Sergio Quintero

I love my town, but it ain’t happening, why don’t we move the Lakers to San Diego while we’re at it, it would make a whole lot easier to go to games.

Seems like it corner or corner in the first round, from reading in between the lines with Gehlken.

          • Marcel West-Bailey

Speaking on moving teams, I really think the Chargers should move to L.A.. Not because it should be in L.A. but to keep the Raiders and the Rams away. I hate what it’ll do to the San Diego community but I think it would be worse if another team moved in upstairs.

Yeah, that’s what I’m feeling too. Maybe a pass rusher but I’m thinking corner. I’m still wondering if Telesco is going to trade up this year since I know they have a strong interest in Van Noy. However I don’t think he’ll be there in the second round when they draft so if they really want him they’ll be forced to trade up or try to make a trade for him after he gets drafted.

The people in SD would be livid, there is big mental divide this is SD over there is LA, I understand it from a business sense, but they would lose a big chunk of current local fan base.

Most people in SD don’t care about the Clippers, once they left they were forgotten, people should show more respect and affection towards Dean Spanos if the guy was all about the money he would have left for LA about 3-4 years ago. The guys lives in SD and actually wants them there.

          • Joel Ayala

That would suck ass if they leave. I’m a San Diego Chargers fan. Not just a chargers fan. My city my team. Keep the Bolt where it belongs. In SD. Bolt on fellas :)

          • 619chargers4life

Chargers ain’t leaving this city . That’s just crazy talk . There will be a vote in 2015

          • Daniel Sutter

Never followed football before moving to SD in 2009. Adapted the love of the game through living in SD, adapted the love of the Chargers from living in SD. SD is where the Bolts need to stay! 619 baby!!!

          • Marcel West-Bailey

Oh I agree whole-heartedly. I think now because there have been some “reports” of the Rams owner buying that land in L.A. people are seriously talking about it but since they have already started talks with the new mayor about a new stadium, I don’t think they will.

  • tonyloc1970 .

    Franklin or Sopoaga

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

I was saying Williams weeks ago because of his pass rush abilities. Would love it if we got him.

  • arnie

I agree, there just isn’t any hurry. seriously. We got Freeney at half his price he was asking for. WE got the LT from Pittsburgh, for a song and a dance to push Dunlap. The reality is, there will be plenty of FA as well as Rookie FA to choose from, and bring into camp. For a lot less money….

    • Derek

We got Dunlap because Vick made him look so bad. Freeney because of his injury cox was our only free agent we prob had Competition for. With nt being such a in demand position I’d say more so than a quality cb. Notice even with a bad knee nix still doesn’t make it out the first rd while only dennard and Gilbert are predicted ahead of him

  • Daryl Peek

Not impressed with any on this list. Cody is the only one younger than Lissemore. Williams is the only one who’s clearly better than Sean but his age? Lissemore has more upside than all. I’d rather see th team stand pat and hope McCullers is available in the 3rd or 4th round. He jumps off the screen when I watch his highlights at UT. I’m not good with Nix at 25 and believe other positions are more pressing in the first and second round. Corner and WR first, speed, speed, speed!

  • ioane

The Chargers are high on Lissemore, but maybe they also really like Kwame and Jerideau as players who can help with the rotation. I am personally very high on Jerideau, I see him as our future starter at NT.

    • Julien Bélair

      based on what

  • vct

Sorry but I think we need to prioritize a wr over db at this point. Even the raiders are getting stronger in the secondary with Carlos Rodgers and Darrell brown. We need Allen green and another wr assuming Alexander and Floyd no go.

    • vct

      Tarell brown*

      • Julien Bélair

I agree! with TT taking a shot at Nicks and Smith it sure seems like he knows it too

    • Derek

Ur right at this point qbs are scheduling drills we need to tlk about free agent recievers

  • CALiFORNiAkiD

LOUIS NIX III or DaQuan Jones

    • Sergio Quintero

I get feeling its corner in the first, and Jones will definitely be an option in round 2-3, but from seeing the answers from the UT chats it seems the chargers view corner ahead of Nose Tackle in their priorities.

  • jcrisp

Daquan all the way yes yes yes
