What Players Are on Your Draft Board?

Everyone has their group of players that they are hoping for the San Diego Chargers to select with the 25th selection in the draft. Here are my Top 5 players at this time for that spot:
  1. Jason Verrett – I am not a huge fan of taking a corner in the first round of the draft, but if it has to be done, it would be with Jason Verrett. He is one of the best talents in this draft at the position and would be a huge upgrade at corner for the team. He would immediately be looking to take over the starting gig at corner and could be huge for the defense.
  2. Dee Ford – Ford’s potential coming off of the edge is out of this world. He gets off of the ball quick and can force quarterbacks to get rid of the football before they want and that could give the secondary some opportunities to pick off the ball. Imagine having Melvin Ingram and Dee Ford coming off of the edge for the defense for the next few seasons.
  3. Odell Beckham Jr. – This seems more like a dream than anything. I don’t know if Tom Telesco has the balls to take a wide receiver in the first round, but this offense could be one of the best in the league by adding a talent like this onto that side of the ball.
  4. Kyle Fuller – We need help in that secondary. Fuller is another player in the draft that could be an instant help to the defense. He could start immediately and make some good things happen for the team.
  5. Louis Nix – Nix is the best nose tackle in the draft. The team could use his wide body in the middle to clog things up and allow his linebacker to do work. Is the need at nose tackle larger than the needs at the corner position though?

Those are my top 5 players for the Chargers to select in the draft. Who do you have at your top 5?

Those 5 are exactly my board I would add Cooks & Lee as outside considerations, and Barr & Dennard as players that might fall as a surprise.

    • Nick in PB

      Barr would be awesome.

      • Sergio Quintero

Some of the most recent mocks have Barr dropping at around 16-22, its not a big drop to go from there to 25, as for Dennard he’s not the fastest CB maybe some team takes another faster player and drops him to 25.

  • 619chargers4life

Mine is pretty much the same as yours but would look like
    1. Ford
    2. Nix
    3. Fuller
    4. Verrett
    5. Beckham jr.
I believe if the QB doesn’t have time to throw the rock then our corners don’t need to be probowl corners every single down.

  • afroamongfew

1 – Odell Beckham Jr. – Possibly the second best wideout prospect in the draft, but because of his height folks will rate Evans over him. Would instantly bolster our WR corps.

2 – Zack Martin – Too small and short-armed to play OT, but Martin would give us license to cut all ties with Jeromy Clary and have a fantastic presence on the interior.

    3 – Xavier Su’a-Filo – Same thing as above.

4 – Kyle Fuller – Best prospect at CB in the draft in terms of who fits our scheme.

5 – Kelvin Benjamin – A better prospect than Marquise Lee in terms of what we’re hoping to run offensively, Benjamin would basically be VJax 2.0.

6 – Timmy Jernigan – The only DT I would be happy with taking in round 1, has the tools to be molded into a powerful 0-tech (or, if Pagano has any sense, the key factor in a revised 4-3 base set) and is a mean kid.

7 – Morgan Moses – Less shitty issues than Lewan and the potential to have a high upside as King Dunlap’s eventual replacement at LT.

8 – Dee Ford – Pass-rushing monster whose sole limitations are an inability to drop back into coverage and a history of back problems, but he might be worth it.

9 – Jason Verrett – The safe choice at #25

10 – Marquise Lee – Has the speed and route running ability to succeed, if only his hands were more sure.

    • Sergio Quintero

With the chargers making so much hype about continuity can’t see the guards in the first round, love Beckham as a player, but I still think its CB’s, Ford or Nix.

      • afroamongfew

Well, it could be that the organization might be thinking more long-term in that, rather than draft a guy to fit a hole day 1, you improve a position that will be vulnerable after next year (when Clary and Dunlap’s contracts end and Hardwick might retire if not also enter free agency). Plus, aside from Moses, both Martin and Su’a-Filo can play all over the line, so they’re not pure “guards”.

I get the impression that he’s the high emphasis pick around here, but I would be dreading it if Nix was taken at 25. I watched his tape against Michigan, Michigan St. and Arizona St. and didn’t see anything that would warrant taking him at 25. I don’t see Vince Wilfork 2.0 when I watch him play.

        • Sergio Quintero

I understand your point of view, part of the reason I think Ford is a consideration is the long distance view since Freeney, Johnson, English, Keiser could all be gone after the season. Even with them the pass rush looks mediocre at best.

But with the 29th ranked pass defense, and 31st pass rating allowed I just think that were the pick is going.

I don’t feel comfortable with Nix either, its more the chargers will consider him more than me situation. 2 things don’t jive for me about him: he already has structural knee problems and probably will carry 340lbs plus, and he’s a non factor as a pass rusher, in a pass driven league I don’t like irrelevant pass defense players.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

in the passing league that we are in at this time, we need to find people to help slow that down. Corners and pass rushers are at higher demands than a run stuffing nose tackle.

          • Sergio Quintero

Ernie how serious is Ford’s back injury??, I know he head surgery at the start of 2013 season and missed 2 games, but is it fixed, or is it something that may linger???

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

his surgery was in 2011 for his back and he played through it all this time. 2013 he missed a couple of ames with a knee injury. he did miss part of the combine though because of his back. It will be something to watch out for.

          • Sergio Quintero

Beckham is starting to look really tempting, I know defense is urgent, but he probably might be the BPA at 25, 6’0 Wr’s with 4.3 speed and excellent hands and route running skill don’t grow on trees, plus he’s an excellent return man.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i would absolutely love that selection. don’t know if Telesco will do it though

          • Nick in PB

Agree and I do think Tolesco would do that. Not as high of a need but still a need and he may be the best player available at that pick. At 25, 3 or 4 corners could already be gone. Do we reach for another or take a stud WR. Can’t wait to see how it plays out.

          • Trey P

Ernie why do u keep forgetting that Nt and olbs are the most important players in a 3-4.. Yeah we need a corner but The nose frees up everything look at dontari poe for kc. And look at what lissemore did against the broncos.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

lissemore didnt get to play in the playoff game. pretty sure he was hurt. i agree that nose and pass rush is key to the defense.

          • Trey P

Im talking bout the game we beat them in I think that’s why they aibt got a Nt yet just becuase of that game tho

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

oh… i thought you were talking bad on lissemore… i dont think lissemore is bad, just think there should be more depth behind him. there lack of signing someone means that they have to trust in Jerideau or Geathers

  • Julien Bélair

    1. Between Ford and Nix
    2. see #1
    3. Verrett
    4. WTF… Su’a Filo
    5. no freaking way…. BPA..

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

    Hageman! not happening though

  • Marcel West-Bailey

Everyone on defense, all the guards, and all the receivers. And that’s just round 1.

  • tonyloc1970 .

Your list is good. Enough said.

  • Keegan Tatum

I’m hoping we draft somewhat along these lines:

    1. NT Louis Nix III
    2. best available CB
    3. WR or Offensive Lineman
    4. Offensive lineman or WR (which ever position wasn’t taken in the previous round)
    5. Michael Sam
    6. second offensive lineman
    7. Strong Safety/Special Teams player

  • Sergio Quintero

An ideal mock for me, and possible going with the chargers tendency of tape over skill set.
    1. Verrett/Fuller CB
    2. Van Noy OLB
    3. Davante Adams/Daquan Jones
    4. Josh Huff/Justin Ellis

  • esco charger

1 barr if he falls to us which could happen
2 Nix fills a need and one of the best players available that this point
3 Dennard if he falls the draft has lots of surprises and I would love dennard
4 Ford would be a great addition makes us a dangerous Defense but the injury history is what makes me hesitant on him dont want another Shawn merriman your best attribute is your availability doesn’t matter how talented u are if u are not on the field then how does that make us better ???
5 best player available because ultimately thats what Telesco is going to do last season our biggest need was left tackle but took the best player which was fluker when our pick came around one thing that TT likes to do is good value with the picks even when he was with Indy that’s why trading back and getting picks would be our best option

  • Conor Cahill

    1. louis nix
    2. Calvin Pryor
    3. anthony barr
    4. jason verrett
    5. kelvin benjamin
    6. Brandin Cooks
    7. Zach Martin

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Wow Conor…. get out of my HEAD!!!!! I love your picks, and how you & Nick help me pound the table for strong safety! I like Gilbert too, though… I know it’s unlikely, but he has so much going for him. Size, speed, athleticism, swagga, returns kicks, pick sixes… he’s the whole package in my eyes. Kind of like Patrick Peterson was a lock.

      • Nick Mansoor

I’m telling you Peter, people are gonna be like WTF when we draft one this year hahaha

  • powderBLUE801

I really want Van Noy in the 2nd round.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

      Me too.

    • Sergio Quintero

Me 3, I love instinctive players that are more than their physical skill sets.

      • justin

Didn’t Van Noy also said he would love to be a Charger?

  • Nick Mansoor

Verrett, Barr, Fuller, Beckham, Dennard, Lee, Gilbert (if he falls to us), Ford, Pryor.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

      Love it.

  • BlueBoltFan

    My list is like this:

    1. TRADE THE PICK FOR MORE PICKS! #greed

1a. Kyle Fuller. He’s my favorite CB not named Gilbert or Dennard.

2.Jason Verrett. If he was 5’11″ (or taller) he’d be my top choice. He plays fast, physical, and bigger than his size.

    3. Louis Nix. A potential play-making NT who could make our front 7 one of the best in the league. At the very least he improves the run defense year 1.

    4. Odell Beckham/Marquise Lee. Lee might drop due to injury concerns. If his medicals clear, I’d take him over Beckham. But with the other weapons we have, adding either of these guys would have opposing defenses playing a weekly game of pick your poison.

    5. Dee Ford. His injury history concerns me. He never played a full season in college. But he has an elite first step and athleticism, plus (imo) legit double digit sack potential.

  • RZ

Ford,Hageman(I like him better than Nix),Gilbert(I’m just hoping he drops to us for some crazy reason),Verrett,Su’a-Filo

  • chargersfanfromswitzerland

    1. Fuller
    2. Lee
    3. Verett
    4. Beckham Jr.
    5. Nix/Van Noy/Attaouchu/Ford
Would love Justin Gilbert or Dennard, just dont think we have a shot at these guys, so the list above are definitivly my favorites!

  • Harry Philpot

I would love it if we selected fuller and van noy

  • 1961 Fan

CB, CB, Cb, & then OLT, WR, RB.

  • Nick in PB

Ernie, I like your picks. I don’t know if they are in order or not. I like Fuller a lot for us. Verrett next up. I like Ford but have some reservations about the back injury. Beckham is a beast that I would take if the corners are gone. Not sold on Nix, although he is the best at that position, but I still don’t think he’s an all pro type of NT. He’s only a first rounder because of the lack of true NT in this draft, or any for that matter.

    • Scott Lee Miller

Nick I totally agree with about Nix. Injury weight issues and our need for a DT pushes Nix up the board. I would rather have the kid from Penn State in a later round.

  • Anthony95

Nix – that is all I for sure want in this draft. Rest of defense will improve with him. As of now we have Lissemore and Geathers at NT. Yeah that is not good.

If I had to pick from there its:

CB – Kyle Fuller, Bradley Roby, Stanley Jean Baptiste, Phillip Gaines, Bennett Jackson, Demetri Goodson, Jayleen Watkins, Pierre Desir, Keith McGill, Jason Verrett (people forget Wright and Williams will man the #2 and slot CB positions plus I am happy with our safeties.)

WR – if we don’t land D Jackson – Maybe Donte Moncrief, Martavis Bryant, or Cody Latimer

OL/OG – Joel Bitonio from Nevada, should be available in RD 3 but could fall to RD 4

C – Marcus Martin RD 2 as drafting the replacement of Hardwick means we aren’t so desperate to resign Ohrmberger (though i wish we would) – or draft Travis Swanson, Bryan Stork, Jordan Matthews.

    This could be interesting:
    RD 1 Nix
    RD 2 Marcus Martin
    RD 3 Bitonio
    RD 4 McGill/Watkins/Goodson/Jackson/Gaines/Baptiste
RD 5 Donte Moncrief, Martavis Bryant, or Cody Latimer

    RD 6 BPA
    RD 7 BPA

    • Sergio Quintero

If Nix isn’t there what is your draft board and how would your draft play out??

      • Anthony95

If Nix isn’t there, first throw chairs.

We then really have 2 options, trade out out of RD 1 back into 2nd & gain another 3rd round pick or stay put.

Option 1: target Marcus Martin, Bitonio, same group of CB, and WRs. Only real change for me is for NT we target – Justin Ellis, DaQuan Jones, Daniel McCullers, or Beau Allen. Also, with additional pick we can get another pass rusher or OL

RD 1 – trade back into RD 2
RD 2 – Dee Ford, Jeremiah Attaochu, Kony Ealy, Dominique Easley, Trent Murphy
        RD 2 – Marcus Martin
        RD 3 – Bitonio
RD 3 – Justin Ellis, DaQuan Jones, Daniel McCullers, or go CB here and Beau Allen in RD 4
        RD 4 – same CBs
        RD 5 – same WRs
        RD 6-7 – BPA

        If stay put:

RD 1 – Stephen Tuitt, Dee Ford, Anthony Barr (if he drops), Zack Martin, Xavier Su’a-Filo
        RD 2 – Marcus Martin
RD 3 – Bitonio (if we draft DE/OLB in RD 1)
or Justin Ellis, DaQuan Jones, Daniel McCullers (if we drafted OG/OT in RD 1)
        RD 4 – same CBs
        RD 5 – same WRs
        RD 6-7 – BPA

I think all three draft classes will help us: Nix fills huge whole, option 1 trading back adds more depth and having one of those pass rushers would be nice. Without Nix and staying put we still fill needs and getting Zack Martin or Su’a-Filo is the best move IMO and adding DaQuan Jones at NT in RD 3 would be solid.

  • blu3ny3llow

For WRs I would want Martavis Bryant or Donate Moncrief on the 3rd or 4th round.
