Chargers Work Out UCLA OG Xavier Su’a-Filo

Dec 31, 2013; El Paso, TX, USA; UCLA Bruins guard Xavier Su

Add another name onto the possibilities for the Chargers in the first round. We know the team could hit up a corner, a nose tackle or a receiver for the first spot. We can add an offensive guard onto the list for the team at pick 25.

The Chargers worked out UCLA OG Xavier Su’a Filo and he is a projected first round draft pick. Here is a pic coach Joe D. working out Su’a-Filo (via Reddit):

It even looks like the Chargers were testing him out at center. He is an offensive guard that has the versatility to play all along the offensive line. If he were added onto the roster, we would have some nice pieces on that offensive line for the future. D.J. Fluker and Su’a-Filo would be a couple of guys that would beat down on some teams and would give the running game some huge holes to run through. They would give Philip Rivers some time to get the ball out to his skill players. All things would work smoothly with an offensive line like that.

Su’a-Filo will be a name that will be watched in the first round. Building up the offensive line is always a good thing. We saw the crap that Philip had to go through when he had defenders in his lap all day long and it is all kinds of bad. Build up that wall and let the franchise take care of business in the pocket.

I’m tellin ya, I’ve got a really good feeling about this guy. I currently have him going to us at 25 in my personal mock draft, and I definitely wouldn’t be upset if that’s the way it worked out. This dude is a STUD.

    • boltage89

I have watched his tapes and he very good, I would love him as our first round pick, and maybe fuller in the second round

    • powderBLUE801

I didn’t know he was raised in American fork and played high school ball at Provo high!! Dude why did byu or utah drop the ball on that one??

      • Gunnar Martin

I don’t know man, I guess there’s a reason why neither of them can find any long-term success.

        • powderBLUE801

Yeah lol…well I want him even more now I know he is a utah boy!!

          • Gunnar Martin

            Haha same here.

    • arnie

You can never have to many Bruins on the roster. Especially when they were coached by Jim Mora Jr. When Micheal Harris returns things are going to get interesting.

      • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

Harris did get thrown into a Baptism by fire his first year… It’s a shame he got hurt last year

        • arnie

He actually played well as the swing tackle.

  • 619chargers4life

I wouldn’t mind him on our squad . Bye bye Clary .

  • Dave

Only CB or NT in the first round please!

  • ECAVILLE/Ace of Spades

Always build your team in the trenches. Everything else falls into place. I’m not mad at this pick.

  • MachoMenos

If he’s available and the other options at CB, NT and WR are gone then we kill 2 birds with one stone: a dancing bear at Guard and adios to that sorry excuse for a lineman and his $4 million contract. Soooooo many things that could happen. Only trading down for more picks in this talent laden draft could make me happier.

  • Marcel West-Bailey

Could this be the beginning of the end for Clary? Time will tell.

  • Derek

Only an option if we trade down. It is unacceptable to cut our starting cb and let free agency and the draft go by without addressing it with a adequate cb. The latest we can wait is 2nd rd. we can depend on lissemore at nt and get a wr n olb in 3 rd 4 th rds. I feel since we have hardwick one more yr we can find a good guard in the 3rd 4 th. Look Ay last yrs guard and their impact. Bpa but I say skill positions have priority

    • arnie

The thing is CB are a dime a dozen in this draft. A 1st round talent can be found in the 3rd an4th rounds. I don’t want to sleep on finding the future at Center or Guard.

      • Julien Bélair

        especially G

      • Derek

Don’t let Carroll and his dynamic duo of chancellor and Thomas fool you. We need a starting cb right away. Look at last yrs draft. Dee Milner,dj Hayden, truant, Amerson. Of all of them only truant has held down his position. The draft graded them all highly.look at last yrs top guards. Warmack, warford, and cooper. Cooper broke his leg, could happen to anybody. Warmack did not bring back cj2k even with munchack as head coach. Warford did the best and you could credit Reggie’s production to him to some extent and their failure to succeed to Schwartz and staffords ineptitude. But look at our team we don’t need a guard to start right away, we can still grab a guard fa all the fa corners are or will be too expensive or in the Marshall catergory. No offense to the guy, but all he does is not get beat.

        • arnie

Note is said “Center/Guard”. Hardwick is in his last year, and waiting to find a Center only to realize he is not coming back is foolishness. A OL can be a back-up Guard, and learn to play Center while Hardwick is still here.
Taking 1st CB is no guarantee he will be a starter, day one. Or work our at all. Not to mention if does turn out to be a stud, he will not make the defense that much better, than adding a future protector to Rivers, Run blocker, and upgrade from Clary or heir to Hardwick.
This team has not seen what Steve Williams could do (a 5th rounder), that was highly praised in the combine. With Wright, and Marshall at CB, and Williams in the mixed, i do not share the sentiment that ” we need to take CB in the 1st round”.
Again, it’s not “Where”, you take players, it’s “Who” to take.

          • Derek

True it is who you take, but aren’t these cb’s coveted as first rounders because of who they have shown to be on tape? Verret, fuller, denard,Gilbert, roby have shown exceptional ability to make the jump to the outside in the pros. Now history shows that prob 2 of these guys will show to be pretenders but it’s just as possible Xavier could be one too. Y can’t we draft the top center next yr? Fredrick made the transition well after a few hiccups. I say we lock ornburger down for a yr since he can slide over and if a talented c takes a slide or one gets cut out of preseason like our old back up did we snatch em. But with the 25th pick and no comps I say best cb is more important than bpa

    • Julien Bélair

trade down with 49ers and draft this G

  • powderBLUE801

I would love this pick too gunnar. He is a beast!!

  • Daryl Peek

Can someone explain to me why so many hate Clary when the coaching staff and his teammates clearly love the guy and all he means to the team?

    • Sergio Quintero

Hate is a strong word, for me, its overpaid, I think he’s very similar in production to his teammate Rinehart, and he makes twice as much. If you release him to the open market there is no way he will make 6 million he makes here.

      • Daryl Peek

I can dig that but more often than not I see folks on these blogs talking about him like he’s stealing money and is hot garbage as a player.

        • Sergio Quintero

There are people that hate him a whole lot more than me, I don’t want him gone personally, just get him to take a paycut like other veterans.

They already correctly valued their other guard in Rinehart at 3 million, pay him that and I have no issue whatsoever with him on this roster.

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

It’s not like I hate him… I don’t even know the guy.. it seems like everyone around him thinks he’s a good person, so I imagine he’s probably cool. But he is making a dollar for every time I have seen him on rollerskates, or letting his guy fly by him, or jumping offsides like a rook at the absolute wrong time, or just getting pushed out of the play by someone smaller. One thing I do like about Clary is that he stays healthy.. but that just isn’t enough for me. You have to be good, and he is barely average at either position he plays. I know there is much better talent out there, and at a much cheaper price tag. Like this guy up here^, for instance. It’s time to move on from Clary, whether people think he is some huge presence in the locker room, or not (which I don’t see his leaving drastically affecting the climate). Having said that, something still tells me that he isn’t going anywhere.

          • NativeSanDiegan

I could not agree with you more! Don’t hate HIM. Just hate him letting a guy run right past him. He could do that a few miles south in the Bullring. And being pushed back10 yds into PR by a midget! OK, that’s a slight exaggeration, but Peter’s right. It always happens at the worst possible time…

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I mean.. he has improved SOME since they “demoted” him to guard… and by “improved”, I mean he isn’t a total friggin’ liability when he’s out there… But, not to the tune of 6 million dollars improved!!! I don’t even want a pay-cut at this point. I honestly believe you could find a younger guy that plays guard at about the same level as Clary in the 3rd or 4th round, and at a much cheaper price tag.. lol.

  • Joel Ayala

Beef up that Oline for years to come. I have a feeling were going Oline or Offensive player first rd. I’m trusting TT. I’ll be happy either way. Bolt up!!

  • Julien Bélair

    trade down with 49ers!!

  • Craig Hasan

Why don’t we just restructure Clary’s contract? We’d be good at RG for a bit longer and save some $$$, thus allowing us to focus on other positions. Please don’t tell me Clary is seriously concerned with money.

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

    Now… that’s news!!!!

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Also, are we trading for Jackson, or drafting a receiver in the first round? I wish I knew what was going on there somehow. On second thought… maybe I don’t want to find out.

    • Gunnar Martin

Maybe they are a lot more optimistic about M80 than we are, along with the fact that they think Vincent Brown is a lot better than he showed last season. My guess is that we draft a receiver in the third round or later.

      • Sergio Quintero

Clearly if he gets the doctor go ahead Floyd is coming back, he’s made his intentions pretty clear, and another consideration is that JerMichael Finley who had a very similar injury is expected to return.

If the chargers haven’t taken a WR by the 3rd round its pretty clear they have positive reports on Floyd.

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I agree. Even if it isn’t week one, if he can get back on the field, I have a feeling he will. I just hope it’s with the Chargers.

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I have a feeling we will know more about Floyd very soon.

  • Tom Spalsbury

Almost to good to be true. I bet he’s gone before we get a chance to pick him up.

  • gpack17

starting to feel like they let go of clary, draft a og, wr, and safety in the 1st 3 rounds..move gilchrist back to corner..
