Chargers Met With Missouri CB E.J. Gaines

The San Diego Chargers were in attendance for Missouri’s Pro Day and they and they had their eyes on corner E.J. Gaines during the workout. They met with him after to get more information on the youngster.

Gaines is a 5-foot-10 Senior that is projected to be taken in the middle rounds of the draft. He is a candidate to be taken between the 3rd and 4th rounds.

The draft is deep with talent at the corners. Gaines is someone who fits the Chargers system. Based off of his scouting report from CBS Sports, he plays a little bit of off man and can also match up in press. He can use those off-man skills in John Pagano’s defense. He anticipates routes well and will undercut them.

His criticisms are that he is more a hitter than a tackler. At least he will actually put on a hit on a player. Derek Cox used to work to get blocked on defense.

Gaines will be an option when the Chargers selection comes up in the 3rd or 4th round. The team better have another corner selected before they select Gaines though. The team needs a lot of love at the position.

to be honest I really love this guy.. I think he will be a steal in the draft

    • Eli Rodriguez

I agree. He could be another mid round steal.

    • Anthony95

Agree – I have seen him listed at 5’11 and 5’10. He can’t be exactly either so does anyone have the exact number.

  • serg21

Anyone notice that the new management we can actually predict in a way who we are going to take not like aj Smith who some times took random players like Larry English Antoine cason players like that

      refreshing

right… if they are good, they likely are on our radar.

    • Derek

But look at who we met with vs who we picked last yr. we never spoke with teo. I dono I like the smokescreen because it prevents teams jumping you to take your guy. Nobody ever knows what the pats are doing. Harbough n the 9ers play their cards close too.

Te’O did visit the Chargers before we drafted him, didn’t he? Go to the bottom where it says “Te’o’s other draft visits include the Lions, Bears and Chargers”. I thought I read another article last year about us working him out, or talking to him, but I can’t find it. Maybe I’m wrong, but I swear the Chargers did meet with him for a personal interview before the draft.

@epadaon:disqus .. can you clarify this? Do you remember that, or am I mistaken (again)?

        • Derek

U might be right because I only checked 1 site immediately after he was drafted. I remember being that shocked. Walter football said he didn’t speak to us. Maybe they just went to the pro day there. But look up our other picks last yr I think we only met one. I think kiko was our planed pick but when teo fell out the first Tt made an executive decision and traded up to snatch him.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

It may very well have been when they were talking to him at his pro-day. I remember them talkiing to Kiko too, and the reports were at around the same time… I agree that Alonso was probably our intended pick.
Just for kicks… I know it’s still early.. but, we saw Kiko outperform Te’O by a landslide this year.. but, do you think Te’O will be better than Kiko in the end? I struggle with that all the time, because I wanted Alonso, and we spent that extra pick moving up for Te’O. What are your thoughts?

          • Derek

I think buffalo is putting kiko in a position to be great. We haven’t been with teo. I think kiko will end up looking better. We have teo playing a bowman role stuffing the initial gap chasing the Rb to butler. They have kiko last season in butlers role. Next season in Avrils role getting sacks and causing fumbles. I think kiko is quicker but teo could have made those same plays if we had him in on 3rd down. I’m not a coach but for a rook teo did well in his role just didn’t get ints because he was rarely allowed in coverage but him and kiko played the run the same, both need to bulk up 5-10lbs to stop bouncing off rb’s. But teo has shown the ability to make his weakness his strength in an offseason…… Kiko makes sense but I’m goin with teo! Pretty sure it’s the charger in me preventing my objectivity but idc

I am hoping for big things from Te’O this season. Especially with better depth, a year under his belt, a healthy foot, some extra weight, and I think he already did his sophomore slump in 2013, and got it out of the way.. hahaha.

    • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

Yup and a big reach like Mouton…. What is that scrub doing on the team still as well as English? Send em’ off to Buster Davis Land already

      • Diegoblue

        Lol..

  • Derek

Yes!!! He is the top zone corner…. Well behind darqueze. Sleeper pic I see Asante Samuel as his ceiling the way he baits qbs.

  • powderBLUE801

This guy is fast he can hit and has soft hands. I think he is more of a late 2nd round pick in my eyes!!

  • Nick Mansoor

Nice to see that TT actually notices our CB situation. Thought he forgot or something lol

    • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

      That was a good one

  • Victor Ruvalcaba

I would love for us to get two good corners in this draft… what do you guys think?

    • maxisthebest

Verrett in the first Gaines in the 3rd or 4th, DT 2nd and WR 3rd or 4th

      • Victor Ruvalcaba

Yea I’m really starting to like Verret yes we know he’s not tall but he plays with confidence and a chip on his shoulder that I like.. wold be awesome to get a tall physical corner down the draft

    • powderBLUE801

I would love to see that happen.

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

I think that has to happen, probably grab a couple after the draft too. There’s supposed to be alot of talent left over once it ends. Hes the man at grabbing his ufa’s he likes.

  • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

Here’s one thing I definitely DON’T want to see…. SD drafting CBs then they don’t keep these guys like the last 2 seasons of RBs they went thru.. I realize there r many holes to fill on the Defense, but upgrades please not just mediocre depth….

  • Nick in PB

As a Mizzou guy, I was hoping they would have an eye on Gaines. I’ve never seen him have a bad game. He’s solid. He’s not a combine killer but his instincts on the field are first rate. He was locked up on A&M’s Mike Evans, a top receiver in this draft, and tall, and held him to 9 yards receiving on 2 catches! He likes a challenge and yes, he can hit. Would love to see him in Blue and Gold!!!

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

nice insight on him…. sounds like a player we could use on this defense.

  • Roy Hobbs

Its kinda, funny how before the chargers had the tallest receivers in the NFL and possibly now they’ll have 2 guys that are 5’8 180 playing corner- but hey they’re fast. I’m looking forward to the draft, though*Bart Scott impression* can’t wait

  • Roy Hobbs

Besides the chargers draft I’m really looking forward to what st Louis does in draft
