Chargers Re-Sign Seyi Ajirotutu

The San Diego Chargers re-signed Seyi Ajirotutu today, per Ricky Henne. Ajirotutu is a very good special teams player on the roster and also made some clutch catches last season. Ajirotutu will be competing for a roster spot in training camp and will looking to get more playing time on offense.

Ajirotutu led the team in special teams tackles last season and is a key member of that part of the game. Ajirotutu wasn’t able to take many snaps away from Vincent Brown on offense last season despite Brown’s struggles at the receiver position. Ajirotutu has shown a good relationship with Philip Rivers on offense.

Ajirotutu signed a one-year contract and will be competing for playing time during training camp.

The Chargers have been looking at a number of wide receivers in free agency. They offered a deal to Steve Smith and also had their eyes on Emmanuel Sanders and Hakeem Nicks. The team will likely be adding other options at the position this offseason to compete for a starting job.

He deserves more playing time, don’t know why he didn’t see the field more with Brown clearly struggling, maybe Reich will give him a chance, I have a feeling that Brown better show something in preseason or Tutu or Inman will take away some serious snaps from him

Have a feeling the chargers will draft a WR before round 3 is over. They need a stretch the field guy, so my prediction is Paul Richardson in the 3rd round.

    • Julien Bélair

Davante Adams in the second would also be nice

    • Julien Bélair

How fast was Richardson at the combine?

      • Sergio Quintero

4.35 Julien, to Adams 4.57, the only reason he’s not a lock for the 2nd round is that he only weighs 175 lbs, but he did have over 1300 yards in Pac 12 last year.

        • Julien Bélair

The only reason…. This is a good reason. At this weight it might get injured a lot…

          • Sergio Quintero

I’m sure whoever gets him will work to get him over 190 lbs, lets remember DeSean Jackson maybe the best vertical WR plays in the high 160 to 170′s.

          • Julien Bélair

I’m not saying I don’t want him… I’m saying he belongs in the third round! But yeah it might worth taking a shot if he is there when we’ll pick (3rd)

          • Sergio Quintero

Adams, Moncrief, Richardson all look like 3rd rounders to me, especially with the depth in this draft, whoever falls to the chargers I’m cool, order as of know: Adams, Richardson & Moncrief.

          • Julien Bélair

there is maybe depth but players are so good… they all going to be taken very quickly… it is a premium position

      • davacho
    • navw21

What about WR Allen Robinson from Penn St. 6-2 220 lbs in the third rd

      • Julien Bélair

        second rounder

        • Sergio Quintero

I would love to see Brandin Cooks for the 2nd round pick, after his combine it looks very unlikely.

          • Julien Bélair

I have him in the first in my mock at the moment

          • navw21

Okay if we are willing to take a WR in the second what about Jordan Mathews from Vandy? That would be hope for

          • Julien Bélair

I have him as a lat first early second…He is not going to be there… I think we are looking for a Cb in the first and Van noy in the second

          • Sergio Quintero

If I did a mock I would have Verrett at 25, Van Noy at 57, Richardson at 89.

          • Julien Bélair

I my mock I do have Verrett at 25 :)

          • navw21

I was thinking Roby at 25, Gabe Jackson at 57, Adrian Hubbard at 89, McCullers at 121

          • Julien Bélair

We will draft a Wr before round 5 imo but I like your selection.

The only one I strongly disagree is Roby as our first. He is just not the kind of guy TT likes.

Also McCullers should fall into the fifth round imo

          • navw21

Yeah you and Sergio have good points on Roby, I’ll swith it over to Fuller and keep debating on Verrett.

          • navw21

And TCU players in the first round for us have been pretty good so if we do pick Verrett hopefully that continues. LOL

          • Julien Bélair

I wish too but I am not worry at all

          • Sergio Quintero

The history of Virginia Tech secondary players is pretty amazing too, Fuller is very much in the conversation.

          • Julien Bélair

He is… a lot of upside but he will struggle in his first year

          • Sergio Quintero

And the chargers need a starter, Verrett doesn’t seem to have highest ceilling, but the guy is ready to play.

          • Julien Bélair

Yep but he is far less a gamble too. You know that you get a solid starter at the corner position or a beast in the slot.

Fuller might become the better player after 4 or 5 years but it is hihgly uncertain

          • Sergio Quintero

Unfortunately I saw the 2 games he was awful, Abbrederis went over 200 yards against him, and it almost exclusively him.

Robinson split his over 160 yards between him and the CB, so when he got torched twice I said pass for me.

          • Sergio Quintero

Roby gave you my opinion, Jackson I like but WR, OLB & NT are biggers needs, Hubbard is getting the stink eye from the Alabama staff for his conduct, so expect him to drop, McCullers I want to like his skill set, but the guy pretty much bombed in the senior bowl.

I’m production over skill set in my view of picking players.

          • navw21

Im still not sold on Verrett just his height really. What about Roby or Fuller?

          • Sergio Quintero

Not sold on Roby, I’m scared with better athlete than player guys (aka Al Davis guys), saw him get torched Abbrederis & Robinson, has ball identifying problems.

Fuller is rock solid, but Verrett is actually the best fit for a Pagano defense, he wants his corners to play off and play a whole of zone. That requieres elite ball skills, and route recognition skills, which are Verrett prime assets.

          • Julien Bélair

Verrett is now 190 pounds and he is physical… a welling tackler and he has one of the quickest feet of the all draft class. At this point he might be gone before we pick… I am really high on him.

If TT has to choose between Roby and Fuller it is really easy. Roby with all his off field issues is just not the kind of guy TT is looking for (historically speaking).

Fuller on the other hand has size (6 foot) he has a lot of upside he would be a good choice if Verrett is gone.

          • navw21

Yeah I could see that all that being a possibility.

          • Sergio Quintero

Doesn’t play as fast as he timed, but had serious production in the SEC, I believe he will be gone by pick 50, if he’s there at pick 57, he’s value you take him.

      • Sean M

He would be a great match with Philip and he is coming out of a school that ran a pro style offense. I would think that has to put him ahead of the curve compared to other rookies when it come to learning an NFL offense.

    • chargersfanfromswitzerland

fuller, roby or verett in the 1st, van noy in the 2nd and a receiver moncrief, adams, bryant etc… in the 3rd and i would jump for joy!!!!! like the receivers alot, the only other option in the 3rd i wouldnt mind is bucannon.
if that happens and tt somehow brings wilfork to san diego… omg that would be kind of awesome!!!!

      • chargersfanfromswitzerland

really like the singning oft tutu by the way, now all the own free agents i wanted back are back, good job!!

        • FitzWilly

          • chargersfanfromswitzerland

            ahahaha okey :)
sounds nice, yeah when youre overhere in europe, you should defintly make a trip to switzerland, you would be very welcome!!

hmh no the nfl isnt that big here, its more about soccer and hockey, but sometimes you meet people who follow the nfl too, guess the fanbase is slowly growing!!

      • Sergio Quintero

I’ll pass on Roby, you can read the reason a little below in the comments, Bryant makes me nervous, I like the others you mentioned more, but I would still take him in the 3rd round.

        • chargersfanfromswitzerland

yeah i red it sergio, actually i dont think tt will draft him, but if we get him in the first, i could live with that… saw the pro day and was impressed. also mayock speaks highliy of him and i kind of like mayock!! :)

      • Stefanie Smith

Are you living in Switzerland now, or now living in San Diego?

        • veazy

          He lives in Switzerland.

          • chargersfanfromswitzerland

            i do sir!! ;)

        • chargersfanfromswitzerland

I live in switzerland, but i follow every step the chargers makes. looking forward to summer 2015 when i hopefully comeback to sd for a few weeks!! :)

  • Julien Bélair

Good signing he will make the team because he is so good in the ST. TT loves to keep his players and that is a good sign for our young group of guys.

    • Stefanie Smith

He’s always been good. Just needs more playing time to show it. Rivers has always had a connection with this guy from way back.

      • arnie

I agree even if Tutu is the 3rd or 4th WR on the depth chart.

  • Joel Ayala

Atta boy TT. Tu-Tu is a solid ST player. And I think he needs to take more snaps than VB this year. VB struggle hard last yr. Imo.

  • Daryl Peek

I’m curious to see Tobias Palmer in the return game. He made a living out of big returns at NC State.

    • Sergio Quintero

Does he have any game as a WR?, haven’t seen much of him

      • Daryl Peek

Nothing special from what I saw on film. Good in open space and had solid numbers.

  • gpack17

i would not be opposed to davante adams, brandon coleman, martavious bryant, allen robinson

    • Julien Bélair

Byrant does seems like a good fit with Rivers

    • Gunnar Martin

      Coleman is my favorite

  • 619chargers4life

Now why would jones go to the Raiders that doesn’t make sense

  • Gunnar Martin

Tutu!! Great to have ya back!

My favorite call of the year by Josh Lewin was the game-winner against the Chiefs-

“…Rivers in shotgun… Clary with a block… Rivers goin endzone looking for Ajirotutu (!!)… He has…. GOT IIIIIIIITTT!!!”

    • Stefanie Smith

I have always like Tutu. You are a fan, too? Tutu and Eddie Royal. Some don’t really go for Eddie, but I like him for some reason. I think he looks sad sometimes though, (not sad playing, sort of sad eyes)

      • Gunnar Martin

Haha yeah I think I like them both much more than the average Bolthead, especially Royal. Don’t really know why so many fans dog on Eddie so often. They work hard and don’t receive tons of credit, and I respect guys like that.

        • FitzWilly

Is this the Royal Tutu you speak of, my good man :)

          • Gunnar Martin

Hahaha. Oh Fitzy, of course it is.

  • SDC3917

I know we need corners but if we don’t get Van Noy in the second this draft class will be ruined for me……:(

  • blu3ny3llow

Good for him he deserves another shot…..I hope they would draft Jordan Mathews in the 3rd or 4th

  • veazy

So happy for Tutu, but I think they should have brought him in on at least a two year deal.

  • arnie

I was praying they would bring Tutu back. For whatever reason he did not see more time on the field, is beyond me. See, if they made he switch from cox to Marshall, I don’t see why they did not make the same switch from Brown to Tutu. Maybe this was McCoys stubborn conservativeness? Maybe is was simply a matter of brown having more time in camp and knowing the offense? Whatever. I like adding a familiar player to the offense to compete for roster spot. At the end of the day, Tutu is still a great special teams player.
