Dwight Freeney Restructures Contract

Dwight Freeney helped the team free up some room under the salary cap by restructuring his contract. He took a pay cut from $3.5 million to $2.5 million and gives the team a little more room under the cap for their most recent signings, per Joel Corry.

The Chargers still need some help on he roster, but there are no signs that the team will add any starting talent through free agency. The team looked for a receiver and was interested in both Steve Smith and Hakeem Nicks, but they both signed onto rosters yesterday. Maybe the Chargers can point their eyes toward James Jones, but that seems more of a dream than anything close to reality.

Free agency added depth onto the roster, but no starting talent. The draft will need to boost up the roster.

    Nice. Thanks Freeney.

  • Preston Niedert

They might getting ready to sign a veteran NT?

  • Nick in PB

Team Player! Good job Freeney. That shows class when he knows he got paid while being injured for almost an entire season. He’s going to come back hungry too.

  • navw21

Well since all the good CB, NT and WR’s are gone. What if we gave a one year deal to SS Chris Clemons from Miami. We could move Gilly back to CB and it would bring more bodies to the D.

  • vct

    Howuxh would Vince wilfork cost?

    • navw21

Probably starting around 7 million and that might be low balling it.

      • Gunnar Martin

Whoever would be willing to give him that much at this point in his career would be stupid. Achilles injuries are no joke. I would love it if we got Wilfork, but only if he comes relatively cheap.

        • navw21

I agree but he was unwilling to redo his deal when he was supposed to make 11.5 million. I wouldn’t sign him for more than 3.5 a year.

        • Diegoblue

I agree at 32 can’t get dumb wit the money and over extend

      • Sergio Quintero

Might be cheaper because teams have spent most their money, if Raji who’s younger got 4, I’m putting Vince at around 4-5.5.

  • 619chargers4life

sweet!! now Wilfork needs to come on home. Donald Butler is campaigning for him, so i guess i should as well.

  • Gunnar Martin

    Awesome. Clary better be next.

    • Sergio Quintero

The guy will just not go away, how every other player is taking pay cuts and this guy is untouchable is beyond my comprehension, don’t hate the guy but he’s basically Rinehart which is 3 million dollar player, not above 5.

      • Diegoblue

I don’t understand what the hell is going on with Clary.. Don’t won’t to cut him .. Cool but damn what’s up with the restructure ?????

  • Trey P

Free agency is not over with yet there are still starters out there so calm down and be patient the draft is May and free agency just started we Will sighn a WR and DT trust me..

    • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

      Calmer than you are!

    • Stefanie Smith

Who do you think are the good ones out there still–within a decent price range? What do you think are reasonable price ranges for those positions?

      • Trey P

I Do know that Telsco tryed to sighn Steve Smith and Earl Mitchell that tells us alot there. And also u still have Miles Austin, Sidney Rice and Kennny Brit out there. Those are low risk high reward players.. So I think Telesco is waiting it out and doing a lot of research before he goes after them. Remember the longer you wait the lower the price gets..And dint rule out Vince Wikfork if released.

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

That’s awesome, I wonder if they could get Gates to restructure (and cut Clary after the draft). If Wlifork does get cut I would hope we would go all in at trying to make that happen, Imagine the upgrade Wilfork would be over Cam.

    • Stefanie Smith

Gates, Rivers and Weddle need restructuring, not pay cuts. But it does concern me that TT has not done it. I read somewhere that Rivers and Weddle had offered some time back. If TT is not going for a restructure on those guys– (which usually gets them a contract extension–to spread out the guaranteed money) could mean TT is not sure he is going to give these guys a new deal. Hope he is not that radical.

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

He’s got awhile to figure these things out, if they aren’t looking to sign anyone to a high contract then they have no reason to do it right now.

      • tubbs45

Rivers restructured last year, but Clary, Gates and possibly Weddle for sure could. But remember restructuring is usually not the same as a pay cut. a lot of times it is just pushing $$ to the end of a contract and deferring the CAP impact to later…

      • JoseSD

Restructure aren’t extensions, they don’t add more years to the deal just push more of the money towards the end of the deal or turn some of the base salary to incentives and bonus money. I’d rather they.don’t because restructures mean they have a higher cap number later on and usually players get released instead of playing out their contract

      • John Alton

        Duh, Rivers retructured last year.

    • Sergio Quintero

Blanks haven’t you gotten the message Clary is untouchable, why is that, is beyond my comprehension!!.

      • Julien Bélair

        that makes both of us

  • Stefanie Smith

Did he restructure or actually reduce his pay permanently? I was looking around for some analysis. So often, the restructuring is more guaranteed money in the form of a bonus or signing incentive that can be prorated over time. Nonetheless, it still helps making room with the salary cap…which is why there is so much restructuring.
A pay reduction –that is something different, but I guess that could all still be part of the restructuring. Guess the contract terms will be out soon. Not that it makes a difference to me.

    • Gunnar Martin

It’s a pay cut. According to Joel Corry, his cap hit this year is reduced from $4.75 million to $3,843,750 too.

      • Stefanie Smith

That can also come from rolling over a portion of his salary to a bonus, thereby reducing his pay and lowering the cap. Same result for the team, but the guy does not lose his pay is all. NFL will post his contract by Monday. Well find out soon.

People used to think Brady took an actual reduction in pay when he did his restructurings. It has never happened once in his entire career. His pay is just repackaged. Not saying it didn’t happen here, but we’ll see. And still, it’s nice he is talking. If they get to the same result, I don’t care whether the Spanos family keep more money in their pockets or not. Pay cut vs pay restructuring.

  • Derek

I sooooo hope this is making room for wilfork!!!!!

    • 619rockstar

Me too, that would be huge for us

      • Julien Bélair

        350 pounds huge

        • arnie

Gonna need more money that $1 Mil to get him…..I’m not holding my breath.
However i’m encouraged it could happen since the rumor was the Chargers offered Steve Smith a contract.

    • Julien Bélair

      good call there buddy

  • Stefanie Smith

Julius Peppers to GB – $30 mill max over 3 years with $8.5 mill in the first year. Guess Green Bay is mortgaging their future and deciding not to look to the draft for that position.

I was being a little snitty there, but why does a team like GB spend that kind of money on Julius Peppers if many on this site think it is so wrong and not the thing to do?

    • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

That’s Alot, I thought he would only play another year or two. I also thought he was going to have to wait along time like Freeney last year and sign on the cheap. Seems like this year all the old Vet pass rusher are highly sought after, makes sense though cause all the guys from last year did well everywhere they went on cheaper deals.

      • Stefanie Smith

Yeah, I don’t want the fur flying over here. But it seems we are the ones swimming against the current this year.

      • Stefanie Smith

And it is a player’s market. Some of these teams did drive the price up a little, but no more than when Miami signed Mike Wallace. That was over the top. The Chargers/fans remind me of my grandpa. He is so out of touch with what things cost, he thinks everything is overpriced. Obviously not. Because everyone out there (these GMs and owners) are not stupid except us.

      • Stefanie Smith

GB is pretty conservative and they forked it over. Maybe it isn’t as much as we think.

  • Sergio Quintero

WR is a nice luxury but the NT situation has to be a priority, in particular the draft is deep at WR not a NT.

Wilfork is every bit as good as Soliai & Joseph the top NT in terms of money, so go get big Vince, and make everyone on this defense better.

  • Stefanie Smith

NE Patriots – Another team mortgaging their future – Browner gets $17 mill over 3 years. Article says that Browner wanting to sign there is reasonable as NE expects to play way into January.

    • Sergio Quintero

When you really win you get discounts, the Raiders have to overpay for the torture of playing for them, another reason to develop an aura of winning.

      • navw21

Yeah 60 million under the cap and still hard to get players to visit and sign with them. I might feel bad for them if I didn’t hate them so much… Well probably still not.

        • Stefanie Smith

Raiders are signing a whole bunch the last few days.. Tuck, Antonio Smith, Tarrell Brown– not so bad there. I think they did okay on Tuck’s deal, but cannot recall what the dollar amount was.

          • navw21

I wouldn’t of minded Tarell Brown for us but the rest of those players have seen there best days probably. All have been in the league 8+ years.

          • Stefanie Smith

Rivers and Weddle have been in the league that long. They still have something left. Manning — a lot longer and Brady.

Justin Tuck still has something left. I don’t know if he will fit well in the Raiders’ system, but we will see.

          • Diegoblue

            2 year deal 11mil

      • Stefanie Smith

Yes. Miami and Tampa Bay had to overpay. There are teams these players like, for sure.

        • Sergio Quintero

San Diego seems neutral to me, if they offer market value they’ll come here, but they wont take a discount to come here.

          • Stefanie Smith

True. I heard some sportsperson call us mediocre and dull. I changed the channel and gave the tv the 3rd finger.

          • Sergio Quintero

            LMAO, hahahaha

      • Diegoblue

        Tru indeed

  • Sergio Quintero

I already mentioned 2 things I didn’t think would happen that appear they will (Brown being WR2, Lissemore starting at NT), I will add another almost impossible Clary staying at his current contract.

    • Stefanie Smith

Sergio: Why do you think they don’t want to use Ajirotutu more? He and Rivers appear to get along and the guy is not so bad. We can’t say he stinks, because they rarely allowed him to play.

      • Sergio Quintero

Every time he’s on the field I think he produces, I’m not against it in any way, I’m curious to see the CFL guy, 6’2 WR with legit 4.4 speed don’t grow on trees.

Either of those 2 would be ahead of the world’s smallest TE V.Brown.

    • JoseSD

I think Eddie Royal should be the #2 WR Brown has only been productive out of the slot . He’s not a player I see making an impact as a Wideout. He’s better off making one cut and slant and corner patterns in the slot against a nickle corner and slower safeties and lb. he could have a niche as a possession receiver. But as a #2 receiver on the outside, I don’t see him succeeding

  • Stefanie Smith

Looks like the Panthers are looking to sign James Jones. Mortgaging their future.

    • Sergio Quintero

I’m sure he was their backup plan after they couldn’t sign Nicks, they need talent on O around Newton.

      • Stefanie Smith

Yes, they do. It was an ignorant move on their part to let go of Smith.

    • Diegoblue

It’ll come back on them but they blew it by letting go Steve and not going hard at Hakeem now they have two WRs who never caught a pass

  • tubbs45

Thanks Freeney. Please go slap the Cheetos dust off of Clary’s face and make him take a cut now!!!
    Happy jazz hands!!!

    http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y462/staffpicks/Animated_GIFs/jazzhands.gif

    • arnie

i hear yah, consider this. If they restructure Clary’s deal, he could be here next season and end up costing against the cap, if they cut him. IF he plays the final year of his deal, and the Chargers have a better/equal option at RG,(and i believe they will) Chargers are free and clear of him in 2015. In the meantime we get a player that can play RT in a pinch, but plays better at RG.

  • Sergio Quintero

Julian Edelman resigns with Pats, no surprise, but another good player of the board

    • Marcel West-Bailey

And Ben Tate signed with Cleveland. Hold no biases. Which would you rather have simply based on previous play. Ben Tate for 2yr/7mil or the deal we have for Donald Brown which I think is like 3yr/10mil?

      • Sergio Quintero

Brown is healthier at this point, with RB’s that is probably more important than even production, Tate is a better player in terms of production, but that is bloated behind the best run blocking line in football.

So long story short Brown, he’s been productive with a bad line, and is healthier at this point.

        • Julien Bélair

Yep Tate is the better player but having a good playing riding the bench isn’t very good

          • Stefanie Smith

For a good player, riding the bench is like torture. Bradshaw or Brandon Jacobs -whoever was on the 9ers, said he was dying because he never got to play. I imagine being they are competitive by nature, it has to about kill them to sit. If we couldn’t use him all the time, glad Tate got a chance to go where he can play more and be utilized to the fullest.

          • Julien Bélair

yeah Brown was the better fit for us

          • Julien Bélair

I’ll go of topic and ask you …. what do you think of Kenny Britt at this point ?

          • Stefanie Smith

I will do more research, but people say he had issues, but I could never find what they were. Maybe, it is just that he doesn’t play enough. It really does drive them nuts, being such competitors. I am going to get back to you and do more research on how he did last year.

I never paid much attention to him.

          • Julien Bélair

ok get back to me on this Stefanie

          • Stefanie Smith

I looked up some stats and information on Britt. By the way, he is also making a visit to the Pats and possibly the Redskins.

Here is something that sounds pretty good.

“Britt obviously lacked confidence and concentration last year, but there aren’t many players more worth a cheap, one-year “prove-it” flier. Britt’s talent hasn’t evaporated and he’s still only 25″

          • Julien Bélair

He could bring some attitude in the receiving corps… I hope he come visit us if he leaves the pats without a contract but I highly doubt it… another disappointment I guess… Maybe we should just go after Wilfork if he is release…

          • Stefanie Smith

He would probably be a steal. He is out to prove himself. We have good coaches here and I think they could turn this guy around.

          • Julien Bélair

But he doesn’t sound like a TT kind of guy. He wants player who are passionate about football and give their 100% all the time….that doesn’t describe Britt

        • Marcel West-Bailey

Man it sure would be nice to have one of those.

      • Derek

Tate wants to be the main back for that reason we prob didn’t consider him. But between the two ya Tate is the better back. Looking forward to seeing between him and Toby who is better

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Ben Tate made it clear that he wanted a starting role… not a back up. However, why did we sign a free agent back up running back at all? That is what the draft is for.

        • Marcel West-Bailey

I didn’t hear that. That is true though. I didn’t think another RB was a priority right now.

        • JoseSD

What’s lost in the Donald Brown signing is the fact that both Ryan Mathews and Danny Woodhead are both free agents next year. If we just drafted a Guy then next offseason we’re left with a 2nd year player as our starter . Who knows if they want to keep Mathews after this year, and Woody might get stolen from us. DonaldBrown provides insurance of a former starter who averaged 5.2 yards a carry not just this year but he’s an a capable starter if that scenario happens next year

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I hear ya. I thought the same thing. I will be keeping a close eye on it. I have been talking to some Colts fans, and they seem convinced he is not starting caliber, and that’s why they went another direction. I hope that he is that guy… because, if not… I would prefer that they get a first round or second round RB If Matthews leaves.

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Males me sick that Clary is still on the roster, is making a boat load of money, and they are restructuring everyone else’s contracts. You would think he was a 7 year pro bowler or something. At this point, now that anyone that they really should have attempted to sign in FA is long gone, cutting Clary is the only option. Don’t even bother restructuring his contract now to sign anyone else. That time is over. Just get rid of that dead weight already.

    • Stefanie Smith

After a huge migraine and a computer crash, I am about burned out with the Chargers strategy right now. I have my idea about it, but it doesn’t matter. Just keep jumping for joy at every friggin bone head move we make.

And one has nothing to do with the other. If they keep Clary and his bloated deal and tell Gates to take a cut or get released, that will say it all.

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Even if there was a restructure of Clary’s contract, they would just sign another offensive player, or 3 fifth string defensive players that won’t make a valid impact. Just cut him, and draft a center / guard so we can replace Hardwick next season. Stop dragging it out. And stop taking money from your defensive players to make room.. Royal needed to restructure.. but taking money from Johnson, and Freeney without using that money to sign anyone significant is insulting. Gotta be honest, Butler is a good player, but he hasn’t wowed me ever. I kinda feel Eddie Royal’s tweet about leaving some money for him.

        • Stefanie Smith

Exactly. And what is the bug in everyone’s craw about getting another WR? We have Royal, we have Ajirotutu (at least we could sign him) and Brown and Allen etc etc… Rivers likes them both (Royal and Ajirotutu) or get one in the draft. Still no decent CB or NT, but we have WRs and RBs. and half the Colts’ team on the roster. (exaggeration there and I was kidding)…

And still no word on Malcolm or Danario, but doesn’t look like they will be back. I hope Malcolm comes back and if he doesn’t that he is healing and feeling better.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I think Malcom will come back. Maybe not for the first game, but he will be back. Nothing that he said implies that he is retiring, or even thinking about it. His words were that he doesn’t “want to go out like that”.

People forget that he was looking better than he ever has in his career RIGHT before that injury. I guarantee Malcom hasn’t forgotten that. If Floyd is healthy enough to play, I’m not totally convinced Allen will take the #1 receiver role away from him. Malcom Is a fighter, and has come too far to let that happen, if he comes back. He was an UDFA, and has an opportunity to be #1!!! He just got rid of premaddona V-Jax, ya know? I’m not sure Allen’s attitude is any different from Jackson’s, honestly. When I asked for a picture, Allen was a total dick and said no. He was being totally anti-social in the locker room. Just sayin.

          • Stefanie Smith

I know. That is why it was probably better not to sign Smith or Nicks. Allen would be pouting. He is sort of a pain in the ass. Talented, but not friendly.

I want Malcolm to come back. Malcolm is a real Charger, not one of these Johnny Come Lately types. I had a feeling that Keenan is going to be one of our future pain in the butts.

Actually, I wish Danario would come back all healthy. Keenan needs a few lessons in humility anyway.

          • Christian Vazquez

I agree that both NT and CB are more pressing needs. But we do need a #2 WR that can stretch the field and put our offense over the top. Though I feel Brown is a good player, he didn’t fit in our new offense and I’m not confident he will.
There’s still Pat Sims at NT and WR Sidney Rice…

    • jcrisp

Id rather him take a pay cut rather than extending him, either way I want him gone.

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Seriously.. I want that to be the next headline.. “Clary FINALLY Cut”. Mediocre, mediocre, mediocre!!! There should be a fireworks display afterward.

    • Sergio Quintero

Your other guard Rinehart is making 3 mill a year, and he’s probably a better player, explain to me why Clary is worth over 5, chargers you already correctly valued the other guy, Clary should be making 3 million or less, get it done.

      • Julien Bélair

GET IT DONE ! GET IT DONE! GET IT DONE !

      • arnie

Clary isn’t worth it, but that was a contract not negotiated by Telesco. However, Clary beat Orhberger out for the starting RG spot.

        • Sergio Quintero

Telesco has already taken the other clearly overpaid players and made them take a paycut, so why not with Clary, all of the position grades from PFF to national media think he’s a middle of the pack RG that and his age should equal to 2-3 million per year, so what makes Clary so special.

          • arnie

First off most of those players were not signed my Telesco. The Chargers needed bodies. Clary was under contract, and was asked to slide over. Instead of throwing a tantrum, an asking to be traded, he moved over. Clary has missed only one game last season and again has been “versatile” for the Chargers, on the O-line playing RG an RT. Is he the best RG in the league? Nope. Did he play “well enough”? Absolutely. Is he over payed for his position and skills sets? Probably. Then again who gave Clary the contract?

My personal feelings as to his contributions in his former position, under a different HC an GM, is completely irrelevant. At the end of the day, Clary played better at RG than RT, under Mike McCoy an Tom Telesco. He has been a valuable player to them, and who’s to say discussions have not been ongoing about his contract?

Besides, is this the same PFF an national media that said the Chargers would only win 6 games in 2013……

          • Sergio Quintero

Clearly Telesco agrees with you, and his opinion is the one that counts, Acee had a Q & A basically confirming that he will very likely stay at his current number, I put some of the interesting of the Q & A on the free agency open thread.

          • arnie

He does? That’s a first. See my mind set is Telesco is trying to leave as much cap space in 2015 as possible. Cutting Clary, no mater how much money it would save this year, would disrupt continuity on the online, and force them to find a RG that can start right now. Re-structing his deal would only potentially push him into being on the roster next year, and possibly count against the cap if cut.
Why not let a guy that was productive, play out his last year, draft his replacement this year, and be free and clear of him in 2015? Being he’s such a terrible player, if necessary, he will be an easy FA pick up as depth/back-up, for much less in 2015. Plus he would be familiar with the system.
Don’t get me wrong, the Chargers need to upgrade from Clary.

    • MachoMenos

I am now absolutely sure that Clary, as well as Larry English and Mouton, are gone. Royal, JJ and Freeney have already re-structured. The only other players were they would save money by cutting them or re-structuring is Rivers, Weddle and Gates. I certainly don’t see them getting cut but they might get re-structured. If we cut Malcolm Floyd our cap actually goes up by over $1.2 million. Where else will Tom get the money if Clary and the rest of these guys aren’t cut?

However, with the best Guards all signed in Free Agency, why tip our hand that we might pick a Xavier Su’a-Filo in the first round or another Guard in rounds 2 or 3? I don’t believe it will cost us anything if we keep Clary on the payroll a few more months. Most teams will believe that we’re picking a CB in the 1st round. This is lying season after all. Didn’t we still have Robert Meachem on the team when Telesco picked Kennan Allen in the 3rd round? Maybe that doesn’t happen if Meachem was no longer on the squad.

      • Stefanie Smith

Clary has to get cut or something, because it will affect the other players on the team. It’s demoralizing.

  • Preston Niedert

Any know that the current cap space number is? Michael Gehlken is reporting that the chargers have nearly restructured three or four contracts and by doing that the chargers have about 4millon plus what the current cap space number is.

    • Marcel West-Bailey

2.8 mil I think. I do believe that includes Freeney’s restructured contract

      • Preston Niedert

Add about nearly 4million plus 2.8 million and that’s there number to work with if they want to sign a WR or vince wilfork. He would be a nice pick and would the defense line that much better.

        • Marcel West-Bailey

None of that is happening until Clary gets the boot

          • Preston Niedert

I hope so he need to rework his contract or be cut.

  • Marcel West-Bailey

If we cut Clary, sign McQuistan, offer him a chance to play at home, sign Terrence Cody, give him a chance to play with a Tide teammate and and old teammate from Baltimore, and call it a day I think we’ll be set for the draft.

    • Gunnar Martin

That would be a pretty solid day. Mostly because of the part where Clary gets cut.

  • Bill Nichols

You go Telesco! Can’t wait to see all the rabbits you’re going to pull out of that ass!! Bolts baby, bolts!! I totally have zero FA, and or Draft anxiety, all because of our new jeffe’ . Feels so good, not to have to predict their picks for them :), I am sure that mutha, knows what it is best……….

  • Preston Niedert

WR Emmanuel sanders may sign with the donkeys. Could the chargers swipe him Away that would be the best news all day?

    • Derek

Nope. He’s a Denver hoe too. Elway pimping them all with promises of a ring.

      • arnie

And Money, they will never get. Ask Elvis Dumervil.

        • Derek

          Ha!

        • Derek

Btw is it just me or did he diassapear in Baltimore? Something tells me some if these stars will do the same in Denver. I don’t think sanders will handle outside well. Also that o line will be funny too.

          • arnie

Yes he did. Elvis was never going to fix Baltimore’s defensive problems. As far as Denver goes, they look impressive on paper.

          • Derek

I’m sure this is gonna rub some Denver vets the wrong way. My eyes on Danny trevathan he’s the new of it all lb that’s in style if we can’t snag van noy he’s next best thing. And referring to Denver “the dream team” looked good in Philly this time of yr too

          • Stefanie Smith

He had 9.5 sacks and 31 Comb. His numbers have dropped off since 2009. But he is still good. They were saying the same thing about Suggs. I don’t know what the issue is over there, but the entire team was not good. Upheaval. And Joe Flacco’s big deal. Let Joe go out there and get some sacks.

      • Stefanie Smith

Promise of a ring: That’s what most teams work for and promise. Not such a bad thing. Wish someone would be promising the Chargers a ring sometime in the next year or so.

        • Derek

But most teams work for it. Not buy it via free agency. Might sound crazy but when the chargers do get a ring I hope it’s not with abunch of guys that came over for a yr. I know nfl is a business but it’s something sweeter watching our guys we drafted and developed win a ring. Rather than grabbing some other guy. But kudos to the players they deff got their $. I know it must be hard for freeny to read about ware’s numbers. Then again I’m not so sure I’m mad at elway. He’s paying what other teams wouldn’t or couldn’t granted none of them will see their contracts till the end without being cut or restructured. But when ur career is over at 35 gotta get as much while u can

          • Stefanie Smith

Your point is valid, but I hope we surround Rivers with the best and not set up the next unknown QB for success. I don’t think that we should take years of rebuilding when the team is not that fouled up just because somebody wants to do it. We end up wasting Rivers’ best years, along with Weddle and others. One or two people shouldn’t be able to decide to take three or four years, when one year or maybe two would do it.

We have our version of Manning and that is Rivers. Surround him with the best supporting cast and we could make a decent run. And we don’t have to go overboard like Denver. Two or three players and we’d have a chance. It isn’t right to have to wait until Rivers retires to have a decent team for some stranger who ends up as the next QB for the Chargers.

          • Derek

That is priority because the next qb who knows. I’m glad we didn’t have to pick from this bunch. Bridge water (low comp, and basic skill set, bortles drop back qb low comp jake locker arm, Johnny who can be Wilson or tebow, Carr who can’t look more like his bro if he tried)

          • Stefanie Smith

I don’t want the new QB getting handed a great team, when Rivers had to make due with whatever. People keep talking that it will be a few years. No. It should not be a few years before a good SB run.

        • Derek

In summation since the nfl is so lucrative y has our cap increases been so nominal

          • Stefanie Smith

Derek: I wonder the same thing. The cap increases are negotiated each year with the owners and the NFLPA. Why they are so slight, I have no idea. It took a bigger jump this year, but it is not keeping up with salaries of key players, for sure. I am going to see if I can find anything on how they set the cap when the NFLPA and the owners negotiate it.

    • Stefanie Smith

And we probably didn’t even try, Preston.

  • Stefanie Smith

Emmanuel Sanders signs with the Broncos. Go figure.

  • Marcel West-Bailey

Walter Thurmond signed with New York and they are hosting DRC later today

    • Stefanie Smith

      It’s getting sickening, Marcel. Truly.

      • Marcel West-Bailey

I understand lol. I’m just waiting for Telesco to cut Clary so we can have some money. But I told Julien if Telesco cuts Clary and does some crazy stuff with the finances or something heroic and gets us another first round pick or finds more Keenan Allen’s we all gotta apologize. Honestly I don’t think they have intentions of getting deep into the playoffs until next year or the year after so it’ll be a while.

        • Stefanie Smith

That is called rolling the dice. AJ had a couple years of good drafting… and misses. Luck. We are down to hoping this guy gets lucky.

          • Marcel West-Bailey

Well I never said I liked it lol. But I don’t think they are playing to win this year. I think next year Telesco will feel like he has the team he wants that can go out and compete.

          • Stefanie Smith

What’s Coach McCoy supposed to do in the meantime? Here’s to hoping Telesco has the team he wants soon—real soon!

We should at least be able to expect to improve over last year. At least two wins in the playoffs and more wins over last year–or we took a step backwards.

          • Marcel West-Bailey

Maybe try to get one game deeper in the playoffs. There isn’t much that can be done. Once he committed to building through the draft, he knows it’s going to take a few years to acquire and develop good quality players.

          • Stefanie Smith

Even the conservative Packers know this (the draft) is not solely how a team is built. We weren’t far off as last year showed. A couple key impact players… and the Chargers are opting out and making sure we drag this on for years.

Key quality players: Even the best of GMs get it wrong in the draft. Do we have to wait a couple extra years if mistakes are made? Two to three if everything goes perfectly. If mistakes are made, then five or six?

          • Marcel West-Bailey

I get what you’re saying but free agency isn’t over yet. It’s been less than a week. Yeah players are getting signed and we have yet to sign a big name but none of the Seahawks were big names until they started playing. Give it time. The draft isn’t even here yet and a lot of us are pulling our hair out and angry with Telesco because it seems like he hasn’t done anything. If the draft gets here and we haven’t made improvements to the roster then we can start looking around but give it time.

          • Stefanie Smith

Doesn’t have to be a big name. But usually everyone knows who the NFL difference makers are. The difference makers are about gone. Does not mean there aren’t some second tier players out there that could make a difference. I remember AJ would say that the best buys in the FA is after the first wave.lol Right.

Surround Rivers with the best… we have our version of Manning. If we won’t do that, then we are wasting Rivers when he is at his best right now.

          • Christian Vazquez

There’s still Pat Sims at NT and WR Sidney Rice. CB DRC would be awesome!
I ain’t giving up hope. These paycuts have 2 be for something…

          • Stefanie Smith

I hope so, Christian. I am tired of waiting for us to at least look like we dominate. Just be able to play competitively against the good teams (more wins than last year) and go one game deeper in the playoffs. That would be progress. Of course, a Super Bowl would be the greatest.

I think the Chargers are close now. No sense dropping a bomb on them and making this a long term project.

          • Christian Vazquez

Agreed. Rivers is not going to play any better. He needs a better supporting cast. Let’s keep it in perspective, it’s year 2 for the new regime. All in all, great job done. Some FA misses and watching Denver get whom they want is frustrating, I have 2 admit.

          • Stefanie Smith

We didn’t necessarily have to go to the extremes that Denver did. But we have our Manning — Phillip Rivers. I sort of believe the Chargers have an obligation to surround him with the best. A couple key players and we would be there–at least in the mix. We’re wasting Rivers if we take another course of action that takes years to show success.

And personally, because we have Rivers, I don’t think it is right for Telesco to take a long term approach. It would be a disgrace if we end up building a great team for some other future QB.

        • Stefanie Smith

So guess they are packing it in on Rivers because he doesn’t have a whole bunch of years left. Build up a team later for a new QB? Nice. Rivers is hot right now.

Every season — it’s always “in a year or two”. This expression is a staple of the Chargers’ organization since the one and only time they went to the SB and lost.

    • Stefanie Smith

Thurmond, Browner, Revis—and possibly DRC. Not going to beat them. At least the Chargers will not beat them. We can wish all we want and say I am a Negative Nancy. Not happening with the way it is now.

  • Stefanie Smith

Brandon LaFell signs with the Pats. Why bother knowing about this? Just jump for joy that Freeney took a pay cut. That will get us deep into the playoffs.

  • Stefanie Smith

Kenny Britt visiting the Pats–inevitably cross him off the list. But hey, Freeney took a pay cut.

    • Gunnar Martin

Britt never should have been on our list anyway. If he signs with New England, then that should be a positive. One less headcase we have to worry about, and one more they do.

  • Marcel West-Bailey

    Josh Cribbs anyone?
