Chargers Scouts in Attendance at WSU Pro Day: Deone Bucannon

The San Diego Chargers are in attendance for the Washington State University Pro Day today, per Ben Natan. If the Chargers were not interested in any safeties in the draft, then they sure are not showing it with their scouts on hand at different Pro Days around the country.

The Chargers had their secondary coach running the drills for Alabama yesterday and one of their top players in the secondary is safety HaHa Clinton-Dix. Now the Chargers are in Washington State and their top prospect is safety Deone Bucannon.

The Chargers also have had contact with Bucannon during the Senior Bowl and he is a player that could be an upgrade to the secondary. We have Jahleel Addae and he did well toward the end of the season, but will he be the answer for the team at safety for the future.

Bucannon is one of the top safeties available in the draft and could be a player the team targets at the top of the draft. He is projected to be selected within the first two roounds and could be anice upgrade for the team. He would be a nice compliment to Eric Weddle in the secondary.

Guess I had this all wrong lol..

  • Paul Fournier

Good size, good range, good hands and physical. After a few thin years at FS and SS 2014 looks like a pretty deep class. Don’t think HaHa or Pryor will be available at 25. I also like Loston from LSU. Tackling machine, a little undersized but great instincts.

  • Preston Niedert

Wilfork maybe released should we pick him up? He could be a big help to the defence.

    • Derek

I’d be all for it but I think we are going to depend on lissemore to bulk up and a draft pick

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Oh baby imagine his fat belly in Charger Blue, this would be the ultimate FA signing and could hold us over at NT for a couple years to groom somebody.

        • Julien Bélair

is he fat !!? just kidding

          • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

best belly in the NFL easy, Raji wishes his belly was like Wilforks

          • Julien Bélair

hahaha but they got nothing on Liugets’ ass

  • Julien Bélair

I don’t like this safety class

    • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

      They gots nothing on Addae

      • Julien Bélair

Exactly. I have the feeling that if we draft a SS he will et beat by Addae for the starting job anyway. But I would be ok to add a safety in the later rounds just for depth and ST

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Quality depth is needed, regardless. They need to sign someone… I don’t care when or where.

        • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

          ya word Taylor is donezies

  • Eli Rodriguez

I really dont see us needing a safety. I guess TT is kinda doing like last year since we needed to draft a LT but got Fluker instead. Fluker and the entire offensive line worked out pretty well. Maybe TT can do the same same with the secondary. A good safety to pair with Weddle could help out alot. I still like the Addae though maybe he can be a good backup player.

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Should I even say anything here, Ernie?

  • Diegoblue

CB .. NT OR NT .. CB with the 1st two picks

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

P.S. – Stop torturing me with safety articles, Ernie.. you know what that does to me. Everyone has already beaten me down on it again this season, as Telesco is completely happy with Addae, and has no plans to sign a safety.. the idea is simply ludicrous, because that position has been locked down for years in SD & there is tons of depth there. It’s not like they talked to multiple safeties at the Senior Bowl, EW Shrine games, and have been in attendance at pro-days where those safeties are performing… or anything. ; )

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

you know i love the torture.. and you know my stance on this subject as well.

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

        Get a room guys……sheesh

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

So we went too the two best safeties prodays back to back but we are perfectly happy with what we have? I think TT wants him a safety ooooooooor it’s a big fat smoke screen just to fool us fans, well played TT well played. Plus Addae is so buff there is no way he can’t be a starter for the next 5 years =p

    • Julien Bélair

or he is just checking other players… maybe even players that will go undrafted

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Wow… people are really trying to talk themselves out of the fact that TT might sign a safety. I guess it just isn’t possible that TT realizes that if he doesn’t finally get Weddle some quality help, that this defense (and the secondary) is going nowhere.

        • Julien Bélair

I think there are more quality players in the draft in the first two rounds that I would take over any safety in draft.

We have a lot of holes. G, Wr(depends if we sign someone), NT(we will not sign any big name in fa so big need in draft) and CB. I see all those position as a much higher priority than SS.

If they sign a safety in the first rd I’ll be real mad…. in the second.. well I might be ok with that if they reallllllly like him.

PS: sorry we are getting into Addae vs draft safety early again

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Guard – Why is this a huge priority again? Clary probably isn’t going anywhere, and they could always keep Ohrnberger. Right now, they have 7 o-linemen on the roster.. 8 if you add Ohrnberger. If they draft one, it will probably be a center / guard in the later rounds.
Wide Receiver – What happens if they sign Nicks, or Steve Smith, and Floyd comes back? Where do you draft one then?
Nose tackle – If they don’t sign one in FA.. which I think they will… then they aren’t drafting one in the first UNLESS Nix falls to us.. and I’m not even sure they would then. If they don’t sign one.. your argument is valid.
Cornerback – They could draft a #1 CB, or wait until a later round if they sign a decent veteran.

Basically, there are too many scenarios to say that Telesco is going in any direction. It’s easy to say you would be mad now, but what if all of the needs you mentioned were addressed prior to the draft? Last season, the o-line was his obvious priority. He addressed it….. the secondary was a close second, and his Derek Cox signing didn’t fix the problem. Why is it so hard for people to think that he might go for a strong safety, when the secondary is clearly the biggest priority? I know people love Addae, but can you say for sure that he is really THAT awesome? He did well, but was it well enough for TT to put all of his eggs in Addae’s basket, with no depth behind him?

          • Julien Bélair

G because Clary even if he stays is not good. We need a badass RG to pound the rock !
I know Addae is a guess but I think a corner could make a bigger impact.

But my first choice and by now I think it is everyone first choice is Nix. After that it depends on how you see the roster.

It’s good to discuss different point of view

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I’m not even here to dispute any of that. I’m just cracking up that people are trying to say that SS is NOT an option for TT.. to the point that they are making up smokescreen conspiracy stories about the Chargers looking at safeties. You know what they looked at like this last year? Middle linebackers… specifically Manti Te’O, and Kiko Alonso. Furthermore, people said that Harrison Smith & Kenny Vaccaro weren’t worth a high round pick, either… not so much.

          • Julien Bélair

You know what I will agree with you. SS is an important piece of defences and Addae is unproven so yes IT IS AN OPTION. I’m not saying that going SS in the first is the option I would opt but yeah it is an option of course ! Addae is unproven and Taylor even more

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

There you go…. that wasn’t hard, was it? I’m thinking the WR pool & CB pool are deep.. the NT & SS pools are not. But, I will evaluate draft picks after free agency gets stale, and you will find out who I like. One thing I don’t do is put time & effort into analyzing players that we don’t even need. I already have too much going on to do that ; )

          • Julien Bélair

ok, I thought that you might have watched some tape because you really want us to draft a safety. To be honest I really don’t like Dix and Pryor.. this is the big reason why I don’t want us to draft a SS in the first round.

Pryor is a hard hitter without awareness.. and Dix I just don’t get the hype.. maybe it’s because he is from Bama but I think he is often late on the play

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I have watched tape.. hahaha. It was some of the first tape I watched, but I didn’t sift through every second of it.. I wouldn’t be sitting here “harping on” about safeties, if I hadn’t… OK, I actually might be still be doing that.. but, as you know, safety has been my pet peeve (even longer than CB). However, that is all I have done…. I have taken a glance at the tape. I haven’t checked out their backgrounds, their potential, their wonderlic tests, what teammates & coaches thought of them, is their ceiling high.. are they athletic.. shoot.. I still haven’t made it all the way through the “defensive backs” combine performances I DVR’d yet.
There is so much more to a player than the tape shows. I agree that the tape never lies, but it doesn’t tell the whole story either (as Arnie would say “context”). What system did they play in.. what scheme.. what school.. who was the supporting cast.. can they be taught.. can their shortcomings be fixed with good coaching? All of this stuff will be researched by our scouts, and possibly myself at a later date.. if I think we will go in that direction.

          • Julien Bélair

hahaha a lot of work ahead of you ! well keep me posted on that when you will start doing it ! Maybe I will chance my mind about drafting a SS who knows

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Oh.. that is my plan sir… hahaha.

          • Julien Bélair

            perfect then !

        • Julien Bélair

          .

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

They could just be exploring their options, which is normal.. but, it sure is looking like they have an idea of where they might go with that first pick. If they do, I think I would have a heart attack, and drop dead before I even got to see him play on the field. I wonder if Eric Weddle refused to show up to practice if they didn’t AT LEAST explore some options? I can hear him now… “Look… you took care of Philip last season.. how about you give me some help this time around, instead of surfing the UDFA pool for help”? Bwahahaha… Weddle would never say that.. or would he?

      • Julien Bélair

Addae vs 1-2 rd draft pick all over again

  • Derek

I’m calling smokescreen, Tt doesn’t wanna be so transparent so he’s feigning intrest in ss to avoid a team trading infront of him to get nix should the steelers pass

    • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

TT is one bad dude at signing Undrafted guys, Might as well scout the big schools that have tons of talent. It’s a good thing for sure.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

That’s pretty elaborate. Not saying they will pick a safety, but it doesn’t surprise me that Telesco is looking closely at them. I doubt it’s because he is trying to fool anyone. We haven’t had an above average strong safety in 12 years. I think that’s a longer drought than any other position on the squad.

“If there is a player that we feel can make this team better, we are going to try to go out and get them”. – Tom Telesco

      • Derek

but bias aside because i think you have harped on our need at ss before. how would u draft? knowing for this 3-4 to work we need starters at nt and cb and phillip looks to only have one wr outside wr next yr and free agency is over

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I won’t, because Free Agency just started. But, if you want to see some guys I liked, I wrote an article about it last week. I took a stab general at it, but that will probably all change.

What I do know, is that got a back up running back, an inside linebacker, and are looking to sign a free agent WR. I need to see if they sign a FA nose tackle, or CB before I go predicting draft picks. There is no point until that has happened. Heck.. I might be on board with drafting a WR in the first round in a week or two.. they could pick up a depth safety.. who knows?

Furthermore, everybody else has been harping on “their” favorite position of need… like, endlessly… Am I not allowed to do that, because nobody wants a safety? Looks like TT isn’t kicking that idea out of bed.. why should anybody else? I am not thinking for Telesco, and saying I’m certain that he is (or isn’t) happy with a player / position. I have my opinions of what he should do.. but, to sit here and say “He is not going to draft a safety” (or any other position) is not something I will be doing.

          • Derek

Ur right I should choose my words better. I do enjoy hypothesizing our gm’s next moves because it’s something chargers related to do. Madden’s getting boring. But it’s w/e my words got no weight. Just trying to find the real story through the rumors

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

No worries… They are talking to safeties.. multiple times actually.. that is not a rumor. If they actually like & sign one of them is another story. At least they are keeping their options open.. I like that, and so should everybody else. I would say that they probably go defense with their first pick.. that much I will predict… but, you don’t need “inside information” to guess that. Hahaha.

      • Julien Bélair

Hey Peter just for the sake of the conversation can you rank me from 1 to 5 the safeties you want in this draft

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

          No thanks = )

          • Julien Bélair

            …ok then

  • gpack17

I really hope we are taking a look at bucannon..if we have a shot to take him in round 3 i would pull the trigger..bucannon or loston would be solid round 3 picks..at this point i would be happy with a corner in round 1..guard in round 2..safety in 3..receiver in 4..olb in 5..and speed or ol depth in 6 and 7..i feel at this point we are going to see a lot of lissemore at nose with geathers getting some time and jerideau when someone is injured..also remember to keep an eye out for some undrafted fa’s
