Chargers Sign Former Steelers TE David Johnson

The San Diego Chargers countered all the signings of the Denver Broncos by signing TE David Johnson, per Michael Gehlken. Johnson is 6-foot-2, 260 pounds and will be looking to maul you in the running game. He also has experience at tight end. It seems that we are going to combat the defense that the Broncos are building with an offense that can pound the rock.

Our best defense last season was the ball control offense. We had an identity last season of pounding the rock and it looks like we are building on that identity.

With Ryan Mathews and Donald Brown in the backfield, the Chargers added another player on the roster that can help in the running game.

Johnson spend the last 4 years with the Steelers offense and came out of Arkansas State. Not an exciting signing for the fans, but another player on the Chargers that will understand his role and will do work. Hold your applause for later though. I wonder if this means we part with John Phillips.

They are moving to a two TE set. Having rotation guy for Phillips, adding second blocker, and he can catch.
More options for Rivers too get the ball out of his hands.

  • Derek

Guess we’re playing the little team that could again this yr. ….

    • shula

I’d rather them build for success in the next few years instead of just next year. They don’t have much choice this year anyway with cap space. Next year though, probably more splashy signings.

      • Derek

like stephanie smith said if the saints can do it for byrd y cant we for one nt!!

  • Derek

Tt better have a crystal ball into these draft pics because he’s acting like we’re stocked on defense

  • shane

this is not a big deal…and doesn’t really indicate anything as far as what the chargers game plan will be…its a small relatively insignificant signing

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      yup… just a guy.

  • Julien Bélair

Good low profile not expensive signing. I hope the backfield is ready because they are going to handle the workload. Watch out defences!

  • matticus

I get it…playing on our strengths. We were a good pound the rock team last year, so TT’s making us an EXCELLENT pound the rock team. Our D didn’t matter when we could control T.O.P. Plus we can basically go ALL D in the draft now aside from one WR.

    • Julien Bélair

I think he wants to go heavy on D during the draft

      • Diegoblue

        He has to brother ..

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

until we sign that receiver.. haha

  • navw21

Seems we will probably use him as pass catching FB.

    • Derek

Yeah my guess is we’ll have him and gronk battle for a roster spot

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

cool, I was going to say maybe he is the blocker that Phillips was supposed to be. Maybe Phillips is gone now? cool signing as long as he is one bad mother blocker

    • Stefanie Smith

Yeah, as long as he can stay healthy as opposed to his stint in Pittsburgh. This guy has had injuries for a good portion of his time with the Steelers.

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Lucky for us his 40 time doesn’t really matter when your only asked to block =)

  • Nick Mansoor

something tells me were lining up Ladarius Green as a WR, judging by this signing.

    • joerockt

Na. I think this is a guy that will come in during max protect and running plays.

    • CALiFORNiAkiD

Chargers fans need to get over this idea of Green EVER becoming a WR

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

        agreed

      • Diegoblue

True.. Keep him @ TE .. He is a mismatch waiting to happen.

      • Nick Mansoor

I meant as a slot receiver in CERTAIN packages, not a full time receiver. If we line up Gates and Johnson as blocking TE’s and swing out Green as a slot receiver for some confusion, like what we saw in the playoffs last season.

        • Diegoblue

Absolutey … He would create problems in the slot because of his size 6’6 and being deceptively fast

          • arnie

Yup. it’s called two TE set.

  • joerockt

Huh, I remember when they first started this guy and was like “Damn, that guy is basically an eligible lineman”. Hope he can help out.

  • Derek

Maybe that’s it Tt figures since the nfl is so mesmerized by the wr’s qb’s and te’s we will have little competition getting our defensive weaknesses addressed in the draft! Look how van noy, Louis nix, and verrett are being talked about compared to every wr, all the qb’s and te’s. Plus with all these defensive signings that means these defensive stars are going to fall from where they were slated like Mack going to Tampa bay.

  • Diegoblue

I’m not mad at it.. We playin chess not checkers.. Not a sexy pick but a good one nevertheless ..

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      yes! this!

  • Diegoblue

I agree .. I still think we need a vet FA WR..

  • CALiFORNiAkiD

Golden Tate signs with the Lions

    5yr Deal

    • Derek

      Damn! Damn! Damn! Comon Steve!

  • Derek

I’ll admit not knowing what’s going on in sd and seeing all these big signings elsewhere is making me nervous. Been down this road before. I hope these big defensive signings lead to defensive pick free falling to us

    • Diegoblue

No need to be nervous Derek.. Still gotta play the games .. I admit they look good on paper but we all know championships aren’t won in March..

      • Julien Bélair

that’s it ! everybody need to keep his calm

      • Derek

But tj ward Von miller and d ware on the same damn team! Along with the high defensive picks they used recently coached by john fox and del rio?!? And talib. This doesn’t seem fair

        • arnie

Von Miller couldn’t find Rivers. Ware is in his twilight. Tj? good player. Talib, ice up son, ice up, because Rivers is going to school them both.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i swear if we get ‘ice up son’… boner

    • arnie

Dunlap, Woodhead, Cox. Nothing to dance about last season. A year later we know 2 out of 3 ain’t bad. As of right now King and Danny will probably not see FA at the end of 2014. Freeney was a “big name” FA, while effective, he did not leave the impact we hoped for. Its fair to say, his resume did more talking than his play.
I’m just going to let TT do his job, and continue to clean up aj mess.

  • davacho

laron is gone imo. johnson played fb/te last year. he can play multiple positions which gives us the op to use him in multiple packages- solid signing in my nonprofessional/fan opinion. : )

    • Stefanie Smith

Do you think he played well for the Steelers last season?

      • Diegoblue

He was until he was injured..

        • Stefanie Smith

Yes.. And he has been injured most of his career for the Steelers. Serious injuries.

And I don’t see how anyone can say he was solid last season as he was out for most of 2013 with an ACL tear that I believe he got in the pre-season.

          http://www.behindthesteelcurtain.com/2014-steelers-free-agency/2014/3/12/5501592/chargers-sign-steelers-david-johnson-nfl-free-agency-2014

          • Diegoblue

Yeah I saw that his knee then his arm.. Well I guess the powers that be figured if he’s healthy he can be a mismatch problem and I assume they didn’t break the bank getting him .. They like his versatility more than John Phillips who tore his ACL As well.. Can’t predict injuries plus he is still young

          • Stefanie Smith

Nobody out there a little healthier with talent? Yes, there is. This is not a primo signing.

      • davacho

i’m not sure. i excited at his potential as a FB/TE combo. perhaps we can drop both laron and phillips… tough to gauge a blocking TE statistically (and i don’t watch steeler ball so i have little tape to go off). too many other factors/players to consider before we look at the bottom tier rushing offense the steelers had last season. plus, and i’m sure you know this- system matters greatly. he’s young and i’m hoping he pans out. : )

        • Joel Ayala

LeRon was already cut. Was part of the first wave of cuts.

          • davacho

My b – ur right. The point is that I think he may be replacement? Time will tell/ thanks for reminder. : )

  • michael walker

    WOOOOOO! Superbowl here we come!!

  • RussinSactown

    BMW. The ultimate running machine.

    • Diegoblue

Lol.. I like that.. They should complement each other well

  • Julien Bélair

hey ernie can you make an open threat ?

    • kushtonslater

      *thread

      • RussinSactown

        I like threat. More menacing…

        • Julien Bélair

          hahaha thanks though

  • Stefanie Smith

Do a google on this guy before you say this is a solid pick for the Chargers. Guy has been injured multiple times. Think he is just coming off a season ending ACL tear. Just keep Danario Alexander then, if injuries don’t matter.

Out of all the available talent out there, I am sure there is somebody that is healthier than this guy and is just as good or better. Come on.

    • Diegoblue

Danario blew out his knee like 3 times 2 in the same back to back years and they still were thinking about bringing him back until he blew it out the 2nd time and now he has an infection .. This is just bad luck.. This not same as this guy ..

      • arnie

        Context. Preach!

    • Diegoblue

He’s healthy now .. He broke his forearm last year.. And his ACL in 2012

      • Julien Bélair

yep plus he will play like what? 10..15 snaps top. Great move because our TE can’t block

        • Stefanie Smith

What is the point of him taking up a spot for 10-15 snaps? Guess we will have to see how much the Chargers are paying him.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

            our tight ends cant block

          • Julien Bélair

see ernies’ comment plus Phillips had 10 -15 snaps last year and mcclain even less

          • Diegoblue

Exactly plus 15 snaps can be deadly if used properly

          • Diegoblue

Who do suggest that we should have gotten for our budget?

          • Stefanie Smith

I have no idea, but I am sure this beat up guy is not the only one.

          • Diegoblue

We’ll talk during the season to see how beat up he his

          • Stefanie Smith

Yes. We had reservations about Danario because he got injured all the time but we signed him anyway. That is why his prior team dropped him–because he could not stay health. And surprise, surprise, Danario is out for the season again with a torn ACL. Sort of the same situation for Danny Amendola. When they are out there, they play fine. But the problem is, most of the time they aren’t out there, but on the mend somewhere.

Just know what you are getting into. Then when he does get another injury, no one will be surprised.

          • Diegoblue

The big difference between him and Danario is that they were depending on him to be a starter a 1 WR .. This guy will be a situational

          • Diegoblue

It’s not like we have money all over the place .. This guy is very versatile .. Basically a H Back.. We can’t bring in the big guns this year.. So make do.. People were saying the same thing about Dunlap and he had a good year.. And it wasn’t his foot last year it was his wrist

          • Stefanie Smith

            Yes, it was his foot.

from the article: “The bug struck again, however, suffering a foot injury that cost him his 2013 season as well.”

          • Diegoblue

From rotoworld : David Johnson is out for the season with a left wrist injury

          • Guest

            this

          • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Gates can’t block, Phillips was signed to block and can’t block and Green is barely learning to block….That’s why. Phillips is toast

      • Stefanie Smith

Then if he is so healthy, why did the Steelers let him go? Because he can’t stay healthy.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

why did the cowboys let ware go? why did the browns let ward go? why did the patriots let talib go?

not everyone can stay on teh same team forever.

          • Stefanie Smith

But Ernie, this guy is coming off a season long ACL injury for the entire 2012 season and pretty much the bulk of 2013 with a foot injury. How can we argue we want these guys to stay healthy then take on one player that is absolutely injury prone? It’s not like he is some HOFer that is worth taking a chance on. There is no one in the NFL that is a TE that can block and is healthy besides this guy?

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

what is it costing us? nothing much. if he gets hurt, then it wont cost us much either.

          • Gunnar Martin

Stef! Settle down! It’s alright. Why not take a chance on a guy that could help us at a very low cost? Not something to get too worried about :)

          • arnie

Agreed. We had this discussion about Dunlap last season….
King and Danny performed, they are still here. Cox didn’t, and now he’s gone.
If this guy can’t produce, i’m confident TT will pull out his straight razor an cut him to…

          • Stefanie Smith

They let Ware go because of his salary. What is this guy getting paid? Same for Talib. Talib thought he could get more money on the FA market. NE tried to re-sign him but he took Denver’s deal.

        • Diegoblue

They let him go because Steelers have two other TEs they focusing on.. You think Telesco would pick up injured players and put the on the roster???

          • Stefanie Smith

He did sign one. This guy has been injury prone (the majority of his NFL time) since 2011. That is not a couple of weeks with a hang nail.

          • Bsmith

…..the coaches are smart and have Google to….pretty sure they aware of his injuries……get over it…..you have said it like 5 or 6 times

  • CALiFORNiAkiD

Looks like Telesco wants to build the offense through Free agency.
If thats the case, he’ll sign a WR next….Hicks, James Jones, Kenny Britt

    • Diegoblue

I would take any of them if the price is right… Not sure about James Jones I think he’s a product of having a great QB

      • Julien Bélair

he is a TD maker and we have a Qb to make him look good anyway

        • Diegoblue

True .. Phillip Rivers can make anybody look good

    • navw21

Was not a person on my list a couple days ago. But what about Eric Decker? Solid WR and could help our D when we face Denver.

      • Diegoblue

        I wonder how much he’s asking ?

        • navw21

Supposed to be a soft market for all WR with the strong draft class coming. Maybe just get him for a one year deal like everyone says about Nicks and Britt

          • Diegoblue

            That would be beautiful

      • CALiFORNiAkiD

        don’t really like Decker.

      • Gunnar Martin

I would love him in our offense. He makes lots of game-changing plays. Him and Allen as our two starters would be pretty awesome.

  • BlueBoltFan

Telesco said they really like Phillips. I think this is La’Ron Mclain’s replacement.

    • Julien Bélair

Yep he is our new FB and 4 TE

    • Gunnar Martin

TT basically says he really likes every player. I would definitely take those comments with a grain of salt. Personally, I think/hope they cut Phillips after signing this guy.

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

        he liked cox… cut him

        • Gunnar Martin

Exactly my point. No guarantees just because the GM says you’re a good player.

  • Julien Bélair

ok too much comments on a random signing….. can we bring a CB now ?

Captain Munnerlyn Visiting With The Vikings Tonight

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

hahahahha… i know right. we talking about just some dude. he might not even make the roster.

      • Julien Bélair

Exactly !! I think we desperately need something to talk about ! what about Revis ? :P

        • Diegoblue

          Lol.. Amen..

          • arnie

If Revis is willing to sign for $2 mil a year, i’m down. other than that, move along, move along…

  • ERICK ESCOBAR

    LETS GET REVIS

  • Julien Bélair

wow tate… 6 millions per year wtf

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

that is more than i though he would get. crazy

      • Julien Bélair

Ya me too way more… again not worth it

    • Diegoblue

Hard to get people when they droppin $$ like that

      • Julien Bélair

Well you can pay a player 10 millions per year if you want he will still not be better.

Tate is a good #2 no more no less.

Ware is a rotationel player who get pushed around in the running game… 10 millions ? well pay him 10 millions but he will still play for 4-5

        • Diegoblue

Yup and the donkeys will find this out

          • Julien Bélair

Fluker will show the Donkeys how to spent money on a guy who will get pushed back on every play

          • Diegoblue

            Damn straight..

  • Diegoblue

The market is up for everybody this year..

  • Julien Bélair

Bills Sign CB Corey Graham To A Four-Year Deal

come on TT all Cb are getting away for SD

    • Gunnar Martin

Crap! This market is thinning out fast. I would LOVE for us to make a move on Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. Steal a good one from the Donkeys while filling a gargantuan hole. Perfect scenario.

  • 619rockstar

I really hope we get drc

  • 619rockstar

Or it least bring him in for a visit
