Chargers Were Interested in Andre Roberts

The San Diego Chargers expressed some interest for Arizona Cardinals WR Andre Roberts, but the Washington Redskins was a “better fit” for what he wanted to do as a wide receiver (Alex Marvez)… meaning the Redskins were able to offer more dough. We didn’t get Roberts onto the roster, but the interest in adding a wide receiver is telling. The Chargers and Tom Telesco notice that Vincent Brown was unproductive at the wide receiver spot opposite of Keenan Allen and they are looking for someone else to add to the roster that can take that spot. It also could mean some interesting news for Malcom Floyd.

The Chargers are looking for a wide receiver this offseason. They are looking for someone who can stretch the field and someone who can take the coverage away from Keenan Allen. Allen saw a lot more double coverage at the end of the year and will see more of it in the coming year if they do not find someone else that can make plays at the receiver spot.

Andre Roberts will not be the guy that will be lining up at receiver for the Chargers. Golden Tate won’t be that guy either. Who will the Chargers go after in free agency now for the receiver spot? Hakeem Nicks mentioned Philip Rivers as a quarterback that he would like to work with. Steve Smith seems like another good option for the Chargers. He still has not been released by the Carolina Panthers, but he is someone who is familiar with a few of the Chargers coaches and he would be a good fit for the offense.

Adding Steve Smith onto the offense would be a nice counter move to the Denver Broncos with their signing of Aqib Talib. The two players have a little rivalry going against each other and it would be nice to see those two battle it out a couple of times per season. ICE UP SON.

Damn… Oh well. Back to the whiteboard

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Decker signing with the Jets is a great move for them, Geno’s gotta have weapons to be productive. I think we get Nicks and draft someone awesome too. If Malcolm has to retire do we recoup any dough? I saw somewhere if we cut him it costs more then to keep him.

    • Jack Huber

Terrific move. If they could get Michael Vick-like performance (sans the injuries) out of Geno, They would be a force

    • arnie

Great move for Deckers wallet. Bad for his stats.

    • Padraigh Keogh

Yeah saw that too. $3.9m cap and $5m dead money so we lose $1.1m. Think release is same as retire unless he agrees to taking no money. Not sure.

  • CALiFORNiAkiD

    WR Wish List
    ——————–
    Free Agency
    1. Hakeem Nicks
    2. Steve Smith
    3. Kenny Britt
    ——————–
    Draft
    1. Davante Adams
    2. Donte Moncrief
    3. Allen Robinson

    • Cooper

Kenny Britt??? That man is an absolute CANCER! No way in hell! Not to mention he can’t catch the ball. Kind of important for a WR. I’d take James Jones over Britt any day.

      • CALiFORNiAkiD

His never played with someone like Philip Rivers.
His never been on a team with the type of leaders we have.

Not to mention he’d come dirt cheap. I’d give it a shot.

        • Jack Huber

yeah. let’s do a 1-year prove-it for a payday contract with minimal guarantees

        • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

I did like when he fell on his head last year, that’s hard to do.

      • Jack Huber

Yeah man. Kenny Britt is a headcase to the Nth degree. Don’t want that guy

    • arnie

      Tutu.

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

if they cant trust him over vincent brown, then why would they want him to come in as the starter?

        • CALiFORNiAkiD

          Exactly.

      • CALiFORNiAkiD

Even after the game winner in KC he still couldn’t get on the field.

    • Calman21

TT won’t sign Britt…too much of a problem personality. Look at the people he has brought it they all have a work hard mentality and are generally positive.

  • Sergio Quintero

I would feel better to know the chargers offered a contract to Alterraun Verner, because that was a damn reasonable deal he signed, to at least say they offered the money but preferred Tampa, I know functionally it makes no difference but I would respect the chargers for trying.

    • CALiFORNiAkiD

Yeah I was shocked he signed for 26M

  • Jack Huber

It would be great to get Steve Smith. Dude was born in LA and went to HS there. I would LOVE to see they guy dueling with Talib. Ice up Son LOL

    • Brandon

Smith would be a great addition he still has a few years. Plus I watched him play down here at the U of U. Bolt up and ice up!!

  • Gunnar Martin

I think we end up filling our receiver holes through the draft, but I would be more than happy to welcome Steve Smith to the Chargers just because of that last paragraph.

    • arnie

I would love to rear him say. ” ice up son…” twice in a season.

  • RZ

Steve Smith would be nice,James Jones,Nicks,Britt..any of these guys I would be happy with, remember they picked up Dontrelle Inman from Toronto Argonauts back in Jan. He’s 6’3” and had some decent stats in the two years he played there, and winning The Grey Cup during that stretch. I hope he turns out to be another DX.Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

  • CALiFORNiAkiD

    Brandon Browner visiting Patriots tomorrow….smh

    • RZ

I am hoping that we sign DRC soon…like tomorrow…lol!

      • CALiFORNiAkiD

I really like DRC….One of the best cover corner in the NFL
But he’s not willing to do the dirty work.

At this point….I just hope Telesco does something.

        • Jack Huber

He wouldn’t be bad, but I wonder if he has character issues like is former Bolt cousin given he’s been let go so easily a few times

          • CALiFORNiAkiD

Not saying he would be bad, just saying he doesn’t do the dirty stuff.
Jump on loose balls, get off blocks quickly etc

And that all comes with effort.

          • Gunnar Martin

When you put it that way, I don’t think we end up getting him. TT likes those 100%, all-heart guys. DRC doesn’t really sound like his type :/

    • Jack Huber

We need to sign that guy if we want in on the Brandin Cooks/Odell Beckham Jr. train

  • Campbell Parker

I’d like to see Bolts have a look see at Sea Hawk CB Walter Thurmond …

    • boltingindiego

hes a jag already signed yesterday,

  • jcrisp

Im pretty sure its gonna come down to steve smith and hakeem nicks. Really leaning towards smith. And corner is tarell brown, carlos rogers, drc, and the captain.

    • Jack Huber

Do we really have the cap space for either of them?

  • arnie

Just Get Tutu into camp. He was “extremely” under used, and a better “fit” than most people think. The Young man has chemistry with Rivers, and basically caught everything Rivers threw his way. Having 8-13 snaps a game, and then having to beg coaches for more plays. Then go in the game and catch the winning TD in KC, only to get the reward of watching from the sidelines in the next game.

    • Derek

I’m not buying it. This is mike McCoy’s team where 1st-3rd string get equal snaps tutu fit in norvs drop back and wait offense. My guess is he was so so on the practice field

  • rell dogg

Get it done TT we need another threat on offense offer a 2 year deal

  • Cooper

They’re playing the 2006 divisional playoff game bolts vs patriots on nfl network… it just makes me sick to my stomach!

  • Raphael Rodriguez

Ive got my fingers crossed with the hope that If Steve Smith becomes a free agent the Chargers at least make a phone call to his agent in regards to 2-3 year contract. I love Floyds game but he’s always injured, and eddie royale can ball but he’s had toe issues this pass season, vincent brown is a guy i still have faith in, and i dont even wanna talk about danario. Danny Woodhead had to catch idk how many consecutive passes last year on one drive against the redskins and he took a pounding, keenan allen during the first redskins game was the only guy catching the ball the first half of the game. THAT SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN. sign steve and lets see what goodies fall in TT’s lap draft day. no matter what the panthers are on the hook for 3 or 4 million next season, thats 3-4 mill that the chargers would be off the hook….. you only live once so make the best of it

    • Julien Bélair

I would be ok with the Chargers signing steve Smith but I prefer James Jones because he is more an endzone threat

    • Stefanie Smith

Always being injured doesn’t seem to phase the Charger decision makers. This tight end we just signed has been injured for the past two seasons. Doesn’t seem to phase the Chargers.

  • Raphael Rodriguez

It was woodhead in the redskins game and keenan allen in the first chiefs game #4therecord

    • Julien Bélair

      you are up late

      • Raphael Rodriguez

lol this coming from u. lol and i mean that in a good way.I cant sleep

        • Julien Bélair

I am from Québec I am going to work soon.. it is 4:35 am here

          • Raphael Rodriguez

thats cool. are you from san diego?

          • Julien Bélair

no.. I became a Chargers fan because of LT!

          • Raphael Rodriguez

he was a bad mofo in his prime. my fav memory of him was when they went down to foxbourough and snapped the patriots 22 road game winning streak. they beat the tar out of those dudes. the run where he gets hit by a couple of defenders keeps moving foward and plows thru rosevellte colvin #priceless

          • Julien Bélair

Clearly one of his best runs. Wow great memories I also like the person he is. Always classy and passionate

          • Stefanie Smith

He’s an angel to many, Julien. And yes, he has class and so much heart. I think the day we let LT go and he felt so bad, I was so angry with the Chargers.

          • Raphael Rodriguez

idk if you saw a football life with ladainian tomlinson but they show that highlight when flutie was comparing his power running to walter payton

          • Julien Bélair

Yes I saw the show. LT is my all time favorite player and I am a die hard Chargers fan because of him.

          • FitzWilly

Ever been to Sudbury, On. ?

    browner is visiting with pats……

    • Raphael Rodriguez

i like that dude. he’s is HUGE for a corner

      • Julien Bélair

yep but he won’t be a charger

        • Raphael Rodriguez

          they never are….

          • Julien Bélair

Chris Cook visiting with 49 ers so goodbye to him too

  • rickochey

lets not forget that there is the draft, roster cuts for TT to get a WR.

    • Stefanie Smith

Waiting for a gold mine in the draft is not going to get us deep into the playoffs this year.

      • rickochey

Then explain, keenan Allen, monte Tao, and fluker? Seems to me you have no idea what football is. Did you even look at what the chargers did last year with the gold mine? Your comment is idiotic.

        • Stefanie Smith

The jury is still out on Manti. And we were not in the SB and did not go deep into the playoffs. And do you think those three rookies were the key to us getting to the playoffs?

          • rickochey

Yup allen, was a huge part of it. Fluker was a huge part of it and mante was also a contributor at a lesser extent. And we made it to the 2nd round out of 3.

          • Stefanie Smith

We still lost. We need difference makers this year. Rivers is getting older. Sick of hearing–wait until next year. And every team is not wrong who have signed top-notch FAs–players that will have an immediate impact on their team… I am thinking 2014- this season so that we can remain competitive. Is that a concept you do not agree with? We have a much tougher schedule this year and I don’t think it is wise to put all of our faith in rookies with absolutely no NFL experience and delude ourselves that they can take us to the SB this year. And you may think T’eo had an impact. Sports analysts question (and talk about it) whether T’eo ends up being a bust as the “NFL is too big for him”.

          • Raphael Rodriguez

Rivers is getting older but i dont worry about it as too much. QB’s can play into their early 40′s baring injury. unless peytons neck gets worse hes not going to retire within the next 4 or 5 years and he lets you know without really telling you. the chargers are good at QB for the next 8-9 years. just remember me 8-9 years from now

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I just get this feeling that Rivers has gotten really lucky with injuries. Even his torn ACL came at the end of the season, and he had time to get back out there. Sooner or later, when you play this game, you risk getting hurt.. just look at Peyton. Maybe you get lucky & bounce back like he did, and maybe you retire. Those chances go up as you get older. I pray that Rivers never suffers a serious injury… but, if he does.. this is going to get ugly. Why wait another two years… hope he doesn’t get injured or his play doesn’t get worse… and THEN to try and win? He’s hot NOW!

          • Stefanie Smith

People act like I am suggesting we spend a wad and go out and sign 10 FAs and break the bank. No. But it would have been nice to get ONE DECENT CB ( a true difference maker) at a fair competitive price, to help us not look like asses when we have to play Denver and NFC teams this year. I am all for the draft but not so much so that we start using it as a crutch and an excuse for why we cannot perform NOW.

          • Raphael Rodriguez

Absolutely not, but like it or not that 12 mill in dead money makes in hard to do anything in free agency. Im a firm believer one of the reason why drew brees one that super bowl was because of (shutter at the though of guy now) darren sharper. That monday night game against NE…. Man randy moss and those receivers folded because the hit squad was in full effect that evening. The reason why im down with getting steve smith is because the panthers have to pay him and that helps the chargers

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Why hasn’t Clary’s contract been restructured then, if we are so broke.. or Weddle’s.. or even Gates? Or, any other number of cuts that could be made. Because, TT is not in any hurry.. and I think he should have been when it comes to a CB. We don’t have ANYONE capable of being a consistent starting CB. It’s so bad, that we are getting ready to draft one, and hope that he is the answer. That’s a lot of hoping.

          • Stefanie Smith

Saints got it done with less cap space than the Chargers had. Yes, they unloaded players and traded Sproles. But they still managed to sign their difference maker – Jairus Byrd.

          • Raphael Rodriguez

Lets make it happen! im super stoked! im buying a steve smith jersey if that dude comes here. watch out demarcus because if steve smith comes here its almost guaranteed hes going to win the comeback player of the year award.and have a stellar seasON

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

And we don’t even have to unload a really good player like Sproles, which is a TOUGH decision for the Saints. We just have to cut Jeromey friggin Clary to do it! That’s what burns me the most.. the management’s undying homerism of Clary.. cut him already, and sign a difference maker! Draft a new guard!

          • Raphael Rodriguez

that dude from UCLA will be around. The 49ers have a lot of first rounders on that Oline and

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

That’s great that the offensive players you keep pointing to were good.. they were, and that’s great. But, name one guy who played at their level on defense that TT brought in. And don’t say Te’O, because he contributed at a MUCH lesser extent. He was pretty much a liability for the most part.

        • Stefanie Smith

And you are no brain trust either. The build through the draft diatribe is old. Every team signing FAs is wrong and we are the only team doing the right thing. One impact player at CB–right now from the top notch FAs that were out there. Is that so preposterous for you? We haven’t been to the SB in over 20 years. Time for Plan B. We have already been “building through the draft”.

          • rickochey

This year makes exactly 20 years.

          • rickochey

You just totally contradicted yourself. Back to the kitchen you go.

          • Stefanie Smith

You have no clue what you are attempting to communicate. It’s all right. I am just not amenable to the “build through the draft” concept when it hasn’t worked in 20 years.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Exactly… Teams that are competing for the Superbowl are signing free agents, but build primarily through the draft.. which I am completely a fan of. But, at some point you HAVE to entertain signing an impact player, when you have zero championships, and the cupboard is bare.. or in this example.. the trophy case is bare. Joerockt & Sergio were discussing this yesterday.. Wiley & Boston were the last big name free agents we signed. Boston was a bust, but you can’t turtle up because you picked the wrong guy ELEVEN years ago, and it didn’t work out. That’s like accidentally marrying the wrong person, getting through a divorce, and then never trusting anyone ever again… and turning into the cat lady. The Chargers are turning into the free agency “cat-lady”. Shoot… even the PATS dropped some coin yesterday, because they knew they had nobody in their backfield.

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Manti Te’O? You were almost credible… and he was nothing to write home about, despite being forced to start, because the other options were awful behind him.

  • MachoMenos

Steve Smith would be great but now that the Broncos have lost Eric Decker if Odell Beckham Jr. is available at 25 we should not only take him because he would make our passing game incredible for years to come, we would also be taking him away from the Broncos who pick after us.

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I’ve decided not to get excited about players anymore until we see cuts and restructures first.

    • Stefanie Smith

Same here, Pete. I am about giving myself an ulcer over it. I wore myself out getting worked up about it. I just want the Chargers to be competitive and get deeper in the playoffs this year, not in five years from now. Waiting to see if there are cuts and/or restructures.

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

You would have thought that this would be out of the way, and we were ready to bid, like most teams in the league. Clearly, they feel comfortable waiting to scavenge from the scrap heap. We should change our names to the San Diego Seagulls. Maybe we’ll get another Jarius Wynn, Johnny Patrick, or Crezdon Butler from the dump if we’re lucky!!!!! What a bargain!

        • Stefanie Smith

AJ used to do this and I couldn’t stand it when he did it. Scrounging. It makes us look weak. I think that is what pisses me off the most.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I won’t even say that you can’t find value, and production there. But, when you need a guy to cover legitimate #1 receivers (or even #2 in our case last year) Marshall, Butler, Patrick, Wright, and Cox showed what you get from the bargain basement. They may pull off a solid game here & there, but they are not consistent. That’s what bugs the crap out of me when fans are evaluating CB’s in free agency.. saying they are “too inconsistent”. Who was more inconsistent than OUR secondary last season?!!! Anybody would be an upgrade. The ones that are consistent, people say “they are too expensive”. That’s because they are good, and consistent! You can’t have “consistent & cheap”.. that’s not how it goes, unless they get hurt all the time. The exception to this is Alterraun Verner.. who we didn’t even take a stab at.. we were too busy dicking around signing a back up running back, a back up TE, and trying to sign Andre friggin Roberts… he was just about the only wide receiver that has been signed.. meanwhile, there are no shut-down corners left. I thought we were going to focus on defense? We haven’t even sniffed a defensive player yet. Oh wait.. Earl (who cares) Mitchell.. and we let him go to Miami first. What?!!!!

          • Stefanie Smith

Chargers do the scrounging so much that it makes us look like we are just putting bodies out there with no thought at all. Just put anybody there. I am waiting for the towel boy to get a starting spot eventually.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Totally. And when they play a good game here and there, everyone says “See.. look.. they can be good”. They can also really SUCK! Most of the time it’s smoke & mirrors. Eventually, good offensive coordinators figure it out, because Pagano isn’t consistent at making smoke & mirrors work either. He suddenly changes everything up inexplicably, or the talent plays like what they are.. back-ups. I’ll never forget how AWFUL this defense looked in that last regular season game against KC. The playoffs were on the line, and the D laid a big fat egg at home to a bunch of back-ups. People can make all of the excuses in the world, because we beat the Bengals in the postseason. Backups, Stephanie. Embarrassing.

  • Stefanie Smith

    Sproles to the Eagles- trade.

    • Julien Bélair

      For a fifth rd pick

      • Stefanie Smith

        Sad.

    • Raphael Rodriguez

Hopefully Darren and his wife are somewhat happy with this trade. Realistically this is a great situation for him in terms of system. One thought keeps popping into my mind though, the reason why he left was because of the salary cap and everyone knows that its only getting bigger. Are guys like drew brees and jimmy graham just going to ask for twice what they want/got now, then? they chew up soo much salary cap space that guys like darren cant get paid.

      • Stefanie Smith

I agree with you. Something has to be done. It’s not right that only one or two players get the bulk of the money on the teams and everyone else gets the shaft. Yes, Drew Brees and Jimmy Graham will end up getting the bulk of any available cap space.
