Chad Rinehart Will Re-Sign With Chargers

The San Diego Chargers keep plugging away and re-signing their own free agents. This time it looks like they are going to reach a deal with starting guard Chad Rinehart:

This is another good move for the Chargers to keep the continuity on the offensive line. Rinehart was a very good starting guard for the Chargers and will be starting on the left side next to King Dunlap.

Rinehart missed some time last season with injuries, but he did well in the games that he was able to play in. The team now has all their starters on the offensive line returning next season. The status on Jeromey Clary is still up in the air. He still remains on the roster, but there has been a lot of chatter about his expensive contract. The team may look to restructure his deal or cut him loose. For now, all of last season’s starters are returning for another season.

Awesome, TT signed all the guys he needed too. I would still pickup a guard or draft one as Clarys replacement but who knows if that will happen or not, he doesn’t deserve to make 4.5 Mil

    • jamfed

Draft a CENTER in the 2nd or 3rd round, plug him in as RG (for him and Troutman) to compete. And that Center can eventually take over for Hardwick.

    • Julien Bélair

Plus I feel like Troutman can ve equally bad/good than Clary and at a fraction of the money

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

        YES!!!

  • jamfed

THIS IS NOT GOOD NEWS, THIS IS GREAT NEWS! With more and more CORE players resigning, this can change the Chargers Draft focus based on TEAM NEED but to pure talent.
I’m sure Bill’s fans are a little disappointed (because he was on their FA radar)!

Again, GOOD JOB TT and thank you Coach Joe-D for finding Rinehart

  • Julien Bélair

I love it I was scared it was not done yet! Love the guy and his attitude. That’s it TT the culture has change since you got here

  • Diegoblue

BEAUTIFUL.. T2 keeps making me a believer.. Great Re-sign

  • arnie

Great news. Now guard is no longer a priority. I still believe they need to draft a center, that can play guard.

    • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

USC’s center seems to be a really good fit, played guard the last 2 years.

    • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

USC’s center seems to be a good fit, played guard the last 2 years.

      • arnie

I like him. There were a few others that caught my attention at the combine.

    • Julien Bélair

      Good plan

    • Sergio Quintero

TT please don’t keep Clary at his current deal, I’m not against him being on the roster, but he’s much closer to 2.5-3 million player, an extra 2-3 million could do wonders in getting a NT or CB on this roster.

      • arnie

I agree. If they can spilt Clary’s money and spread it over the next two seasons that would be ideal. They will have more cap room in 2015, which would probably be Clary’s last season anyway.

    • Trey P

      Not Lg but Rg is

  • tbell11

I wonder if Richard Marshall will be next to get that veteran presence in the CB rotation.

    • Derek

I hope not marshal was the best we could find due to cox being a bust. We may not be able to afford verner but there are better veteran options out there.

      • Julien Bélair

        agreed

  • Derek

Is a guard or a center more of a priority now?

    • Julien Bélair

      Still guard imo

      • Derek

i like arnie’s draft a center that can play guard. but y do people seem to act like troughtman doesnt exist? he looks like a budding lg due to his strength pass blocking over runblocking

        • Julien Bélair

          I like his idea too.

For Troutman, well first he barely played average last year so we do not want to only rely on him. Second we all know that Rinehart or the other G will get injured at some point during the season. So we need to add a good player at the position.
A perfect scenario would be to draft or sign in the fa a very good G that will start and Troutman will back up both G position.

          • Derek

the only real flaw i saw was his offsides penalty looking beyond that one game he played hurt. but I also didnt see anything he was better than average at. so yeah ur right we need to get another center that can play guard to battle him for that spot. now that i describe him outloud he does sound like a depth player not a starter.

          • Julien Bélair

Exactly but hey he is a very good back up very depth guy but we need a more solid player to start.

          • boltingindiego

trout played horrible in the game against denver cant say i’ve said this b4 but i missed clary for once.

  • Rod

And TommyT strikes again! anther great signing. Signing key players from last years team to keep the core nucleus together. Lets have a good FA & Draft. And we can be serious contenders this year for a Super Bowl run.

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Yes!!!! I love this guy. Glad Telesco does too.

We have the same OL ! We have the same OL ! How sweet it is! Super stoked!

Awesome news. Hopefully we could re-sign Rich Orhnberger to a one year deal. Helped us in the playoff game when Hardwick went down.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

would love to get ohrnberger back

      • navw21

Added bonus… he can play both guard positions as well. Depth. Depth. Depth.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

exactly. he is a good player to keep on the roster. he wouldn’t be expensive and he can play in different spots along the line.

  • Derek

i say we try to bring orhnberger back and if not sign a back up center n go all out for playmakers in the draft defensive and offensive

  • 619chargers4life

    Hopefully Rich is next !

  • Sergio Quintero

Priority resignings left have to include Ohrnberger & Marshall, everybody seems to forget about Marshall, you at least want a can play as a starter backup, preferably one with experience in the defense system.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i agree…. Marshall might not b a player that everyone goes nutty about, but he is a solid player that can back up at the position. He has shown that he can be a decent starter.

      • Sergio Quintero

As of today the backup CB’s are Williams & Crezdon Butler, yikes if free agency continues to have insane prices for CB’s, the chargers will have to pick 2 corners by the 5th round and I’m being conservative.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

exactly. and who wants to rely on rookie corners for the whole season. it takes time to develop those guys into good players. we would have to live with the aches and pains of them playing all season long in that spot.

          • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Wad up with Peanut Tillman? I’d sign him

          • Sergio Quintero

The best talent per $ CB in the market is Browner, but I don’t think TT is the kind GM that would risk signing a player with a drug problem who’s probably one offense from a full year suspension.

          • boltingindiego

plus hes out for the first 4 games.

    • arnie

Ha! I hope you weren’t talking about me? When they cut Cox it became clear, while most everyone was looking “outside” for FA CB, i knew that cleared the way for Marshall. The position stabilized when he played, and it only makes sense to bring him back, and let some Rookies develop under him.

    • Tazzster

I’m totally down with keeping Ohrnberger, but Marshall? Maybe on a cheap contract to play back up, because Marshal is not that great. He really suffers in coming up to play run support. I’m not sure he likes to tackle guys.

On an intersting note… I think Clary is a better guard than Marshal is a CB. So, to all you guys who hate Clary and think we should get rid of him, go back and watch the right guard play during the Denver game when Clary was out with an injury… its ugly.

      • Sergio Quintero

I think finding guards is easier and cheaper than finding CB’s, don’t hate Clary but don’t think he’s 5 million dollar player either.

Marshall is at best when he’s your 4th corner on the roster, no way should he be a starter, but at same time the chargers don’t have that 4th corner right now.

        • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

ya if Rinharts a 3 Million per season guy, Clary is a 1.5- 2 Mil guy and thats just cause he’s a veteran.

  • JoseSD

I liked Rhinehart since he was in Buffalo, a really underrated Guard. Its no coincidence that when he came back for the final stretch of the regular season the pass protection improved and they won the last 4 games. Good move . In Telesco we trust

  • Stefanie Smith

I like the common sense of how the new regime operates. Rinehart may not be the Player of the Year or some superstar, but if you signed him to begin with and he played pretty well then why let him walk? No sense signing guys for a season to let all of the NFL see what they can do and and what they can offer–by letting them walk at the first opportunity. I am thankful for this change. In the past, Rinehart would be gone.

  • Stefanie Smith

Do any of you guys think that TT is venturing into the FA market outside the Charger re-signings? I don’t think so. We would have read about some rumors by now. Maybe, but I think the Derek Cox bust really got him gun shy.

    • Sergio Quintero

Bill Polian is his mentor and biggest influence, and didn’t article recently come out on Polian warning Telesco on the dangers of free agency on the UT.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i think he will sign some players, but don’t expect too many huge names to come through. the Chargers have been great at keeping any rumors from spreading with the new regime on staff.

      • Sergio Quintero

Even with AJ they were extremely tight lipped, other teams are so much more open about theirs, everybody and their brother knows Arizona is going to make a run on Branden Albert.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

right… and everyone knows that miami is in on that also. we will sign some players in free agency. just might not be big names. tom did get a lot of production from those small name players last season.

      • Stefanie Smith

AT least TT is not stupid. Miami made a fool out of themselves overpaying for Mike Wallace. He is a good player, but that was way overpaying. I think the Raiders’ GM is going to do the same thing. Overspend then get canned the next season. Heaven help us if the Chargers now have to contend with the Raiders.

  • Derek

why not let marshall test free agency? there are plenty of better options available tmrw. marshall took short plays and kept em short thats all. the defense had ingram to thank for keeping qb’s honest and not letting them have 10 sec’s in the pocket on a damn blitz.
