Johnny Patrick Latest To Be Released By Chargers

Add Johnny Patrick onto the list of players that have been cut loose by the San Diego Chargers today. Patrick was also signed by Tom Telesco last offseason, but wasn’t a big money signing like Derek Cox was. Patrick ended the season on the injured reserve.

Patrick was depth on the roster and was one of the players that got an opportunity to get some playing time while Derek Cox was playing awful.

With Patrick’s release, the team freef up $700k in cap room. Patrcik didn’t have any guaranteed money on his deal, so there is no cap hit for his release.

The Chargers are clearing up some spots on their roster. They are clearing up a little bit of money under the cap to make a run at some players in free agency. Who will the Chargers get after in free agency?

Too bad, useful player, it seems his history of concussion is pushing him out.

In his latest chat Acee is pushing a name for the next NT, Texans starting NT Earl Mitchell, had 48 tackles last season 6’3 305 lbs, 3rd round pick out of Arizona, sounds interesting indeed.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

is there a link to that?

      • Sergio Quintero

It’s from his latest Q & A chat, they asked him about the chargers pursuing B.J. Raji and he answered that a name we should keep an eye on for the chargers is Earl Mitchell.

        http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2014/mar/04/chargers-padres-mlb-nfl-aztecs-sdsu-final-four/

        Here’s the excerpt:

        Comment From Davante
Do you think the chargers have a shot at signing Bj Raji or will his price be too steep?

        Kevin Acee:
Too pricey, I think … Here’s a name for that position (NT): Earl Mitchell. Go back and look at him chasing down Ryan Mathews in the season opener.

    • Julien Bélair

      305lbs is not a big NT…

      • Sergio Quintero

He already played the position as a starter so its not a transition, probably not a star but better than Cam Thomas.

        • Julien Bélair

I just wish we will get a better NT than that. I want a beast :)

          • Sergio Quintero

Free agency in a week we’ll know by then who is the priority at NT.

Have you found anything on Dunlap “being a concussion away from retirement”, I have scoured the internet and nothing to substantiate Fedawa’s claims that sky is falling.

          • Julien Bélair

No word on that. I think he will be just fine

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

    They will sign Brent Grimes.

    • Marcel West-Bailey

I think the Dolphins already resigned him

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Lol… I was just messing around anyway. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if they signed a more expensive CB now. I think TT could be done with signing guys who MIGHT work out. He could make a splash, and get a good cornerback.

        • Marcel West-Bailey

Let’s hope so. If he plans on drafting a corner he might sign a veteran corner for “leadership purposes”

        • Derek

I think this is to make a run at a nt and maybe a wr.

          • Julien Bélair

            I hope NT

          • Derek

            I hope it’s Joseph

          • Julien Bélair

He is my obvious first choice too. lock him for 4-5 years !

    • 619chargers4life

How about a rabbit out of the hat like the Freeney signing and go with Verner, Grimes is off the market . Here’s to wishful thinking lol

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Word…. Let’s get Linval Joseph, Sam Shields, T.J. Ward…. and trade up for Jadeveon Clowney while we’re at it.

        • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Reyes & Vicent Brown too the Raiders for their 2nd round pick. Ya buddy

        • NativeSanDiegan

Now you’re sounding like me Pete

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Hey… I DO say a lot of things… but, I never said we should get rid of Brown OR Reyes… although they are both on my “step up, or step out” list.

          • NativeSanDiegan

Silly discus gave me a reply from you about you saying something about Brown and you replied that you never said anything about Brown. Probably what you deleted but still sent me silly message. Hahaha

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Naw.. it was me.. I looked at the thread wrong & thought you had replied to Mr. Blank’s response about how Reyes & Brown should be cut too. I thought you were saying to him “You are starting to sound like Pete”.. so I responded to that. Then I noticed you were actually responding to me, saying we think alike.. I made a mess of that one.

          • NativeSanDiegan

Hahaha, that brought a smile to my face and a much-needed chuckle

    • Derek

      Dolphins locked him up

    • vct

      LOL?

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

OK.. laugh it up everyone… senile old Pete missed the report where Miami retained Grimes. Sheesh.. yall are relentless! That’s the first thing I have messed up in months. Best make sure you guys don’t get anything wrong… Imma be scrutinizin.. lol.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

hahahahahahhahahahhaha….. uh oh. bout to go off.

        • NativeSanDiegan

          Years!

  • Diegoblue

    CLEAN HOUSE…

    • NativeSanDiegan

They cleaned house last year. Now just getting the dust and dirt out of the corners (no pun intended) and under the furniture

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

HA… he said “corners”. I see what you did there ; )

        • NativeSanDiegan

Glad at least one person got it-figured to be you. Actually lied. There was a pun intended

  • Julien Bélair

Go after a big name NT (Joseph, Bryant or Soliai) and draft 2 Cbs int he draft and sign one vet in the FA like Brown.

    • Gunnar Martin

Soliai, Verrett, Aaron Colvin, Jabari Greer. Now that’s a dream.

      • Julien Bélair

        could happen! keep faith

    • NativeSanDiegan

Julien, are you from/in Switzerland or France? Just curious…loved France when I visited

      • Julien Bélair

haha no I am from Canada (Québec)

        • NativeSanDiegan

OK, I know Montreal is French Canadian. Is Que’bec also? I can’t type the e’ on my phone. Oh well, can’t be perfect

          • Julien Bélair

Montreal is in fact in Quebec. I actually live in Montreal

          • NativeSanDiegan

OK, Montreal is the beautiful city in the Province of Quebec. Learn something new every day. How did you come to be a Chargers fan?

          • Julien Bélair

well I played football here in Montreal but I didn’t watch NFL. Then one day I watched a Chargers game and I was very impress with one player….LT! So I started to watch NFL just to find another Chargers game on tv….the love never stopped ! I became a true Chargers fan.

  • Julien Bélair

Any news on Clary yet? restructure of the deal ?? or just get rid of him? those are the only two choices

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i bet he is someone they re-structure as well.

      • Julien Bélair

re-structure(thanks). If we re-structure him and resign Rinehart(highly probable) we would have the same line than last year. It is a good thing.

        • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

The whole line is full of tough SOB’s just happens that one of them is not very good. I bet he gets cut. I know he has that veteran leadership thing but getting Rivers killed year after year isn’t what you want to teach the youth movement lol. I still say cut him.

          • Julien Bélair

dead money is rarely good and we already have enough of that for next year don’t you think?

          • NativeSanDiegan

I’m not worried about dead money, only cap money

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

They will restructure his deal. Now that Royal has done it, I can see Clary following suit. I look at it this way.. I will have another WHOLE year of material to make fun of him = )

      • Julien Bélair

        hahaha priceless

      • Gunnar Martin

TT seems to like him a lot. I see a restructure in the near future. Doesn’t necessarily mean he will start this year though, still a good chance he ends up a backup :)

      • NativeSanDiegan

True, just don’t use him backup Tackle… even TE Philips would be better.

  • Diegoblue

Don’t we get an extra 7th rounder this year?

    • Julien Bélair

I think so but nothing official yet

      • Matthew Johnson

Yeah but we also do not have a 7th rounder as of now..Traded it to Dallas for Sean Lissemore last year!!

        • Sergio Quintero

Damn I forgot about that last situation, good trade though.

          • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Crap forgot about that too, good call there. Lissmore is bad ass so good trade.

          • Julien Bélair

yep really worth a 7th rounder

        • Julien Bélair

thx for the wake up call buddy

        • Gunnar Martin

I’m pretty sure that 7th rounder is in 2015, not 2014. Let me check.

UPDATE: Yup, it’s 2015. Don’t have to worry about that until next year.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

            It was.

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

          It was for a 2015 7th rounder.

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Besides the draft with so many underclassmen declaring this year, TT knows he can find some serious steals in UFA’s after the draft is over, he did well last year imagine this year. They are saying there is talent that the well is so deep that top undrafted guys year are equal to last years 5th & 6th round talent. I bet that is where we load up!

    • Sergio Quintero

Maybe even Adam Muema, if Lord Rayel lets him sign here if the profetized drafting to the Seahawks doesn’t happen.

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Holy shit Serg, I started reading into that fool last week and watched some of YouTube video’s lol what a Whackadoo!

        • Sergio Quintero

I try to avoid talking about religion but sometimes its unavoidable and too easy to pick on situations like this one. Muema might not even get a contract as an UDFA, because teams will fear Rayel calls him out of the spur of the moment.

          • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

“Though shall not run the 40 under 4.50!, Flee Adam too the Airport in thy combine clothes and cometh not home for 3 days for you shall seek what you are looking for #8 from the Seahawks in no other form or fashion.”

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

            HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

          • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

it was quite funny though lol

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

    They will sign Sam Shields.

    • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

“Peter Rubs his crystal ball with electrodes running through it while eating cheetos”

      • Gunnar Martin

        Bwahahahaha!

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Hahaha… that made me laugh really hard.. good visual!!! I will tell you this… I’m right far more often than I am wrong. My biggest “swing & a miss” was with Starks last season.. I was WAY off on that one. He looked like a pregnant hippo out there… I’ll own that mistake all day.

        • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

That Hippo somehow played on the Rams after us right? man must have been slim pickens over there.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Yes he did. But only for two games. I had to check to see if he was in there when Bradford got sacked 4 times by Carolina, and tore his ACL… he wasn’t suited up that night, though.

    • Sergio Quintero

I’m putting my faith in you, you are my new Lord Rayel!!

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I am a lot like him actually.. except I’m crazy.

        • arnie

This is true. But i still love ya’

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

            Lol… thanks Arnie. Likewise.

    • CALiFORNiAkiD

Brandon Browner just got reinstated and will be a free agent on March 11th

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Interesting. I wonder if he is as good without the peds? If he has learned his lesson, I would kick the tires.

        • CALiFORNiAkiD

I just read the report and it’s really weird. Definitely not steroids or HGH.
I hope Telesco gives him a chance why not.

          • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Hmm looks like he could start the year suspended. I’d pass

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Someone on here said it was aderall… which is basically speed, and still gives you an unfair advantage.. that sort of qualifies as a “performance enhancing” drug IMO. They said he got busted for weed too.. sounds like he likes to party. I’d be careful if they do decide to bring him in for a work out.

        • boltingindiego

browner tested positive for adderall last year and weed this year.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Did they clear him of peds? I haven’t seen the latest report, but I know they were originally saying it was peds. Here’s a quote from an article I read. Even if it wasn’t HGH, Adderall is basically speed.. so that probably is “performance enhancing” if he was taking it before games.. kinda like doing coke or meth.

“Browner was suspended four games late in the 2012 season for a violation of the league’s policies against performance-enhancing substances, which is separate from the NFL’s drug policy”.

    • ERICK ESCOBAR

What makes u so confident i don’t think thier gonna sign a cb in free agency they are gonna draft a cb 1st round

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Well.. I was just being silly, and throwing out names of high priced free agents, to mess with people. Everyone is so serious about this stuff lately. Personally, I am not confident of ANY signings, and neither should anyone else be. There are so many directions free agency & the draft could take, and it depends on how the dice roll.

But, since you asked… they just dropped two CB’s, and one of them was SUPPOSED to be the #1 CB solution last year (Cox). The other CB released was Johnny Patrick, who was more of a depth guy / back-up. That let’s me know that TT will probably need a #1 CB. Shareece Wright is a #2 CB at best (right now anyway), and there is no guarantee that the draft pick will be able to take the #1 role immediately (see Maurice Claiborne in Dallas). I think our CB’s will probably look something like this going into camp.. but, I most definitely could be wrong. This is just my guess.

        1. Starting caliber free agent CB
        2. Shareece Wright
        3. Marcus Gilchrist
        4. Richard Marshall
        5. Steve Williams
        6. Yet to be named draft pick (whatever round.. not necessarily first round)

        • NativeSanDiegan

That makes sense, along with my OL prognostications, of course… haha..both could actually happen, along with a SS to go along with Addai and Weddle, a slashing, powerful rb to use with Ryan, and our WR situation.

        • ERICK ESCOBAR

good point nice to see thiers other people that actually know about the chargers

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Lol… I have to know this stuff, or Ernie will fire me from the writing staff ; )

  • Alter Ego

    I hope its Jairus Byrd

    • NativeSanDiegan

Haven’t seen you in a while Paul. Jairus would be good FS addition, but talking $10 mil. I’d stick with developing Addai and add solid veteran SS. Of course, to develop him and the rest of D, need DC and staff that will actually do that and prepare D for every game. Also, stop with the 3 man rush giving up tons of yardage and TD’s.

      • Alter Ego

Out of the loop for a while Native…evil wife issues.
Yeah the sticker price may be too high – but he would be a huge asset to our DB backfield.

        • NativeSanDiegan

Sorry about the domestic situation. Hope everything works out for the best. Now for our little distraction from real life (I’ve been out of the loop for awhile myself), he would definitely be a great addition to our def backfield. Hang in there Bro’

          • Alter Ego

Thanks Native..divorced – moved from Va to Bend Or…I should be able to attend some games now.

          • NativeSanDiegan

You’re a lot closer than I am. If they play in Seattle you’re almost right there. Maybe you’ll run into Dan Fouts there.

  • arnie

Is there anyway English an MOuton can get on this list?

    • Lee

probably not. i think english is with us on his rookie contract still because he gets an extra year for not playing enough snaps so we have him on the cheap and he gives us depth.

      • arnie

Agreed. However that applies to nullifying his contract. They can still release him. body or not anyone else on the squad is a better option.

  • FitzWilly

So Cox got pulled out prematurely :)
    wooooooooooooo hooooooooooooooo

  • vct

Two DBs gone?!?!?! Get Verner please.

  • serg21

I think we should look at corners like captain munnerlyn and Corey graham.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i like captain a lot and tom telesco tried to bring him in last season. lets see if he tries it again .

  • julian vesga is chargerfan#21

Cut Rinehart get FA guard to mentor Troutman draft a center draft a RG insured pod having a penalty machine (CLARY)
Draft a wide receiver for M80 to mentor
Get a blocking tight end to have the best tight end group in the NFL GREEN GATES
    (And future blocker)

Get FA LaGerett Blount to handle the rest of Mathew’s carries.

get Alteraun Verner in FA to be our franchise corner I just can’t see him be a Free agent bust like Cox, Verner is just too Good for that

Make Marcus gilchrist our nickel corner and jahleel addae our starting SS get a veteran backup SS like Ed Reed and draft a depth corner

Get a veteran depth linebacker like Demarrio Williams, welcome back!

Draft Dee Ford, Freeney will retire Jarrett Johnson will retire too after next season
Thomas Keiser will be on the practice squad

Get Ryan Picket from FA sign him to a one year deal then Kwame Geathers starts you should seriously see Geathers pre season tape he was a Monster! He should get more playing time though Cam Thomas gets released Byron Jeradeau is depth

I forgot draft de’anthony Thomas or dri archer especially since Telesco wants more “speed” it wouldn’t hurt to to have one of the two.and both can return kicks our punts……

    So that’s my offseason opinion

  • ERICK ESCOBAR

Look for chargers to find thier DT in free agency and draft a cb in the first round wouldn’t be surprised if they move up to get a good corner
