Derek Cox Will Be Released By Chargers

The San Diego Chargers plan to release Derek Cox. The Chargers are making their cuts off of the roster now and a couple of players have already seen the ax. Derek Cox is the latest of these moves. Le’Ron McClain was relesaed earlier in the morning.

Cox did not perform with the Charger last season and Tom Telesco was not afraid to cut bait with him. Telesco didn’t let his ego stand in the way and just cut ties with his mistake. Good move by Telesco.

Cox had the whole season to turn things around, but he was getting burnt like toast all dang day on the field. He was benched a couple of times during the season and finally lost the starting job to Richard Marshall at the end of the year.

As soon as Cox was sent to the bench, the defense turned some things around. Cox wasn’t the main reason for the turnaround, but he was part of it.

The Chargers now free up a roster spot for someone who can contribute to this defense.

Thank Jeebus. Never liked the pickup. Glad TT is cutting the appropriate dead weight.

  • Derek

Does this mean we’re in the verner sweepstakes?!?!

    • Sergio Quintero

Probably not, if you wanted them to be in that bracket then Royal, Clary, Johnson have to be released with obvious company that has been discussed, and they have to be really creative with Rivers, Gates, Weddle, and even Freeney.

They appear to be going in the conservative route reworking deals, and going for cost effective players at best.

      • Derek

Damn ur prob right still holding out hope though. With all their $ tied in livetre and pollard maybe they were trying to short change him and he just wants a decent to gracious contract. Nobody wants to get paid to stay on a annual loser (browns, raiders)

        • Julien Bélair

but we maybe are in the market for shield

          • Derek

Does he fit? I hope we draft fuller or verret if that happens

          • Julien Bélair

Verrett is my first choice. He is very low risk. He is perfect except for size. I would pick him over Dennard.

          • Derek

Me too I think denard is gonna have a lot of pass interference in his career

          • Julien Bélair

I agree and he also do not want to tackle the RB

          • Gunnar Martin

I think Shield is going to get a bigger contract than he deserves. He’s a decent player with tons of potential, but he hasn’t been consistent enough at this point in his career. Obviously he can improve, but his habit of letting up big plays scares me.

          • Julien Bélair

I know I know… Brown could be a better deal

  • Sergio Quintero

When I read articles on guys who truly study film the following observations on Cox came up: “He plays lost with little or no confidence”, “his lack of phisicality and tackling ability is bewildering considering his size”, “has incredibly bad route recognition, which means he’s either very football dumb, or is not willing to put in the time to study film, meaning very poor work habits”.

Nice projection for Acee and Gehlken who virtually guaranteed his release, good for their future credibility.

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

I’ll never forget the day he dropped that pick 6….. kinda summed up his bolt Career.

    • Julien Bélair

I remember as easy as it gets but he found a way to not make the play

  • Alex Pitrofsky

How much does that save us for this season?

    • Sergio Quintero

1.65 million, more details on him and other players on the roster:

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

it also depends on if they released him with a post june 1 designation. htat would spread out the dead money to the next two seasons.

        • Sergio Quintero

Very true, we will get details

Keep the cuts coming! Who’s next? CBJ perhaps? Is that Cheetos I smell?

My mistake… you know what I mean.. I want more “announcements”… lol. I’m sick with it.

        • Sergio Quintero

I know this because I got corrected as well in calling for a cut of CBJ, so I was ready to argue how wrong he was, and low and behold he was right CBJ is already off the books.

LOL.. I wish.. he’s just a Free Agent. There has been no mention (that I know of) of whether they bring him back, or not.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i just saw gehklen.. dont know if i spelled that right… say in his chat that he expects him to be back… i guess we need an expensive clipboard holder. hope gehlk is wrong on that. dont see a need for him

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Yeah… that’s a tough one. It kinda depends on what Reich & McCoy think about Sorensen’s development. I know he looked good against second & third stringers, but that’s a small sample size. It would suck if Philip went down right before a game with playoff implications, and you had to stick the boy in there against Seattle.. or the niners.. lol. Remember when we had Volek, and this wasn’t a concern? Ahh.. the good ole days.

  • serg21

Does anyone know how much money we have to work with now?

  • Stefanie Smith

It’s not going to help much this year. Read above: “Derek Cox’s contract in 2013 came with $5.2M signing bonus. His release saves $4.25M in cash but creates $3.9M in dead money.” Still, TT did not hang on because that was his deal.

  • Stefanie Smith

    Anybody see this at overthecap.com?

“Donald Butler signed a 7 year contract extension with the San Diego Chargers on March 1, 2014. The total value of the contract is $51.8 million and it contains a $11.15 million signing bonus.”

His deal results in huge “dead money”. They’re not actually spending it, but the owners can set it aside and it can’t be spent.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

the dead money is the amount of money he would cost against the cap if he were to be released.

      • Stefanie Smith

When I was over at overthecap.com They state that there is cash spending vs. cap spending. The dead money figures into the cap but you don’t actually spend it. For example: You go over there and they have the Chargers at around $126,000,000 spent–affecting the cap. But if you go on the chart to “cash spending”, the Chargers are only actually spending in cash this year (so far) $102,000,000. So no, the dead money does not only come into play when you unload a guy. At least that is how they figure it over at http://www.overthecap.com.

It seems pretty convoluted and complicated to me.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

you didn’t explain the dead money on the cap. dead money is based off the guaranteed money that each player is making. That is the amount of money that would go against the cap in that given year if they were released, since they are owed that money.

A player can have a different cap number for the year, compared to what there dead money is. Sometimes, the amount of dead money each player has is larger than their current cap number. It basically costs money to release those players.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

          which link are you reading?

          • Stefanie Smith

I clicked on the cap spending tab then I clicked on the cash spending tab for the Chargers. There is about a $20 million difference between cap spending and cash spending. I just did some basic calculating and it has something to do with dead money.

The cap spending number is higher than than the cash spending number.

          • Stefanie Smith

I think the difference in cash spending vs. cap spending is the prorated portion of the bonuses or other incentives that hit each year. Granted if you release the guy then that entire bonus hits the cap all at once. I believe they get to prorate these bonuses over the years of the contract.

Look at Rivers deal. Then click on the cash spending tab and then the cap spending tab. The difference is the prorated portion of the bonus, but the entire bonus that was paid out is sitting over there in the dead money column.

The entire bonus already paid out (along with any guaranteed money) is sitting in the dead money column. I believe a prorated portion of already paid out money hits the cap each year. That would account for the difference between actual cash expended versus cap spending (which should be higher to account for all the prorated stuff going on.)

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

    “CRAP!!!! They cut Derek Cox”.

    • Julien Bélair

      hahahahahaha wow nice one

    • Gunnar Martin

Thank you for making my day. The only thing that will make me happier right now is if some other team in the division is stupid enough to sign him back.

  • vct

So we save about $350k under the cap? $4.25 less $3.9?

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

his cap number was $5.5, so it should have cleared up $1.65 M

  • Nick Mansoor

Wow. Didnt think he was going to do that this offseason. GOOD RIDDANCE

  • Julien Bélair

I am very happy because he was awful but he is a good person I wish he can sign with someone else and turn things around.

    Good luck D.Cox

      Next man up

  • arnie

Is thing on? Let me be the first to step up and admit when I’m wrong. I thought they would keep Cox, then i forgot something. They had options. Richard Marshal came in and the Chargers got better play from the position. No i am curious to see how FA and the draft plays out.

  • Eli Rodriguez

Telescope is the man. Finally a gm who admits their mistakes and isn’t afraid to release a player. And to Cox all I have say is Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na hey hey GOOODBYEEE!
