Signing Donald Butler Sends A Message

Tom Telesco re-signed Donald Butler to a good deal and kept him on the roster for 3 years with the possibility of 7 years. He was creative in the contract and it sends out a message to the fans and to the team. Telesco will work to keep his own players and he will be creative with contracts.

Butler wanted to be a top paid middle linebacker in the league, but his performance up to this point wasn’t up to that level. With the contract that was set up, he has the opportunity to get paid like a big time linebacker, but he has to earn it. He has to show that he can do it for the first 3 years of the deal and if he is able to prove it can get done, then he will get that money.

For upcoming free agents on the roster, Tom Telesco showed that he will pay the money to keep his own guys. We don’t have A.J. Smith around anymore to let players like Darren Sproles and Vincent Jackson walk away without anything to show for it.

If only Tom Telesco were around for the team before those guys became free agents. If only we were able to keep some of our own guys on this roster.

We won’t be able to keep everyone on the team, but Tom Telesco will do what he can in order to make it happen. Keep our own players!

For the young players on the roster, they can have that incentive. Corey Liuget and Ryan Mathews will be up for new deals soon. At some point we are going to have to pay Keenan Allen and D.J. Fluker. When their time is up, we can have some confidence that we will get something done.

In Tom Telesco We….

Agree 100% Ernie. I really like how TT wrote up a creative deal that gives incentive rather than the possibility of having that relaxing after a big contract

    Well. “TRUST”.
    I guess,,,,,, so far,,,,,,:-D
Is that the right answere?,,, do I get a prize?
All I want is a,,,,,” LOMBARDI TROPHY”

When do you guys think TT starts dropping the axe and cutting some guys? What date last year did he start cuts?

    • Nate lew

FA starts March 11th and I’ve already seen Seattle drop a few players so imagine we can do the same. Probably much more clear what were doing now that this deal is wrapped up.

I’d be ok to keep Royal for now but Mcclain and Clary should already be gone by now.

Or maybe they are trying to keep the same line that we had last year dunlap rinehart hardwick clary fluker

why not keep clary till we have the guy to fill his spot. McClain seems fine to release since we don’t need him, but Clary is a starter at this point and time. We have made signings and releases in the past in that manner.

keep in mind that troutman played pretty well filling in at guard and i could see him progressing in his 2nd full season and potentially starting even. In terms of mcclain and clary they should both be gone to free up some space. we have way too many holes to fill to keep $3 mill fullback and an overpaid tackle turned guard.

          • Julien Bélair

With competition from the draft I say trout man will win the starting LG or RG job and on the other side we will have Rinehart(resign). no need of expensive Clary

          • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Amen Julien, other teams are making cuts not like its impossible to do so right now or not like we would be shocked if that happened in the next coming week.

          • Julien Bélair

just to make room to buy a NT in the FA

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i think he will keep guys around unless he needs to make that move. there is no reason to make a cut right now without a possible signing in the way. If he makes a big cut, then we can expect a signing soon to come. With the new cap, we seem to be sitting under it just fine. No need to release someone unless we have someone to bring on board.

      • Julien Bélair

Is it possible to release a player then sign a new one via FA in 5 minutes appart? (real time)

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

lol Stefanie always hates cutting anybody =p

There is a little sidebar on this site. It had an article posting there is a rumor that the Chargers want to re-sign Rinehart and Marshall. We will see. I am just glad TT did not let Butler walk out the door. And Ernie, you keep saying that Butler didn’t get what he wanted. First two years, his pay has gone up a ton. He makes a bunch in year one. Probably part of it is a signing bonus or something like that.
