Eddie Royal Restructures Contract

Eddie Royal was a possible player that could have been released this offseason, but the Chargers and Royal have reached an agreement to restructure his deal, per Ricky Henne. Royal was going to be a big hit on the salary cap, but Tom Telesco was able to avoid the hit to the cap with the new restructured deal. The details on the contract still have yet to be released, but it seems like a good move by the Chargers.

Royal was a productive receiver for the team and is a valuable player in the slot for the offense. He has to stay a little healthier so that he can join the team in some practices, but it was good to see him fighting through the pain to play in the games. Royal was a big threat for the Chargers in the red zone and should get a lot of action in the slot again this year.

It seemed a little funny to me that Eddie tweeted this out before the announcement of the deal:

The Chargers might be working to restructure the deals of Jeromey Clary also. Clary is a player that has been mentioned as a possible cut, but was a valuable part of the team. Should be interesting to see if the team can work a new deal for him as well. It would be a good idea to work something out.

Thank goodness. Eddie I love you so much more right now

  • Marcel West-Bailey

Very nice Telesco…I still want new unis though

    • Gunnar Martin

Not if those unis turn out like the Bucs’ new ones. Blah.

      • Julien Bélair

hahaha bucs’ unis what a failure. I just want the blue helmet back !

      • Marcel West-Bailey

OOOOOH HEEEELLLLLLL NNOOOOO lol naw. Well I actually don’t mind them that much but I don’t like the numbers. Reminds me of a digital alarm clock. But I think San Diego should do what Oregon did with their jerseys and add a grey and black to the alternates. Then a electric blue and yellow border around the names and numbers. Something like that. It sounds kinda strange when I write it but in my head it looks right. I’m a design student so I’m looking for some markers and stuff so I can render it on paper.

        • Julien Bélair

Good idea but with blue helmet right :P?

          • Marcel West-Bailey

Oh yeah. Definitely. I only play with the blue helmet when I play Madden. I have no idea why they got rid of those.

          • Julien Bélair

I know that was bad ass ! I like all blue unis with blue helmet

        • Gunnar Martin

I agree that some sort of tweak would be good. There’s a lot of cool stuff you can do when you have a lightning bolt and the sweetest color scheme EVER :)

          • Marcel West-Bailey

Have you seen Duke’s basketball jerseys? The one with the faded graphic on the back?

          • Gunnar Martin

            I have

          • Marcel West-Bailey

That faded grey graphic with…idk…a lighting storm graphic across the entire back of a white jersey…you think they could wear that without looking like circus clowns? lol

          • Gunnar Martin

Haha maybe. Doesn’t really sound like something an NFL team would do though. It would have to be REALLY awesome for that idea to go through. But if it was epic, then why not?

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

        Hahaha

    • NativeSanDiegan

Boy did you guys get off topic. Yes, TT did great, but 10 comments on unis? Oh well, to each his own

      • RZ

        I’m glad they’re keeping Royal,bye the way ;-)

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Hahaha… We do this all the time

        • NativeSanDiegan

I know Ernie. I’ve been known to do it a tad myself, but usually it’s somewhat related. Hahahaha…

      • Why O Why

Hahaha. That just shows you that a change in unis is what the public wants.

Seattle got swag after they changed theirs.

New Jerseys would be a good reason for me to drop some coin.

    • RZ

Bring these unis back for a game or two! Loved when they wore the all blues!

      • RZ

Woops..I mean these unis…i they can wear all whites, they can surely go all Blue.

        • Julien Bélair

yes !!! those are the best !

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Not surprising in the least. I would never have let Royal walk, nor did I ever Ithink he would have held out for more money. Glad to see it. Nice to see reasonable people in our front office, and on our roster for once.

    • Gunnar Martin

Same here. It’ll be interesting to see how much he moved to future years though.

      • Julien Bélair

The Chargers is becoming a great organisation. I love the direction this team is going.

The Chargers gained a tons of respect this year and it is only the beginning for what is coming next with our new GM, HC, etc.

    • Julien Bélair

We seems to finally have a GM who knows what to dois do with his players.

      Refreshing

      • Stefanie Smith

I agree, Julien. I am more skeptical of TT than some, but it is so nice not to get an ulcer as we see good players walk out the door. Then, we, as fans, try to justify it by saying they were not good. At least Telesco is trying. And besides being good for business, it is good for the Charger brand and reputation. Some day, the Chargers may have a huge need for an FA. They have to want to come here at a reasonable price. You create that image by getting your good players to stay. Yeah, I’d say it looks good so far.

  • Julien Bélair

very good news ! I’m glad we keep him. He was really good in the slot this year. Him and Rivers seems to be on the same page now

  • rickochey

TT is doing things that only great GM do.

    • Julien Bélair

      you are right. Great work

  • Gunnar Martin

Just one less spot on the roster we have to worry about. Phew.

  • Cgoodness13

    Gosh TT is doin work

  • lilHurricane

    Really good news

  • lord

just Cut Clary, he sucked last year.

    • NativeSanDiegan

I’ve hated on Clary forever as OT, but last year when he was as a Guard he held his own in pass protection, although waaaay overpaid. There’s also a reason we couldn’t get those 3rd & 1′s, and punch it in for TD’s, until we used Ryan more. Restructure contract and pay like a backup guard, re-sign Chad for 2-3 more yrs, look very closely at Troutman in training camp-he was terrible last year, draft a real guard who can move the pile and holds up in pass the protection, and draft our next center, and hopefully draft our future franchise LT. Is that too much to ask?

      • Julien Bélair

        probably a bit too much

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Hahahaha… I might shed a tiny blue & gold tear if all that happened.

          • NativeSanDiegan

Heck, it’s only 3 picks. Find a diamond in the rough for LT-rd 2-5, really good G rd 2-3, & good C/G rd 4-5. Help Addai develop as starter, move Gilchrist back to covering slot, try to trade Cam to 4-3 team for rd 4-6 pick, develop our 2 young NT’s and sign mid-priced veteran to hold the fort and help young guys. Whew, I’m on a roll now but gotta go

    • boltingindiego

He played solid as a rg last year him and fluker are a nice combo on the right side.look at our rg against denver in the playoffs dielman wasn’t in their and troutman was. chargers offense suffered as a result with the pressure coming from his horrendous play there. He does need to take a pay cut from his over priced rt contract though. we do need to get a future rg though in the draft.

      • NativeSanDiegan

Yep, that’s what I was thinking; and signing and keeping Chad Rinehart (did I misspell that) at LG. About Dielman at RG last year… think you meant Clary. Dielman had retired already; suddenly and without much warning due to concussions. That’s why some of us, J Fedewa (I know I misspelled that) mentioned it in another post, want to draft our future LT if we get the chance. I know… beat writers haven’t mentioned it, but personally I don’t care what they mention. King very well could be 1 concussion away from retirement.

        • boltingindiego

ya meant clary. the dielman retirment hurt since he retired after that horrible concussion wished we had prepared depth at the position. the lack of depth we had o-line during the end of aj smith years killed us. hopefully tt keeps it up after last year and keeps the o-line restocked. with dunlaps concussions and hardwick probably retiring next year were gonna need help.

          • NativeSanDiegan

I think I said Clary: “About Dielman at RG last year…think you meant Clary. Dielman had already retired…”

          • boltingindiego

ya i know i meant clary when i said dielman at rg.. I brought the dielman retirment in my last post because the lack of depth we had at o-line during the end of the aj smith era at lg and lt.

  • MachoMenos

    AJ who?

  • Aaron Johnson

Hell yeah. Ill be rockin my #11 jersey again. Tom Telesco is able to do things AJ wasnt. Big difference, treating players with respect. Its a mutual business and it takes everyone to succeed. I hope they do restructure Clary with the way he played last season.

  • Boborino

Totally makes sense. Common sense GMing. Rather than take a cap hit and cut someone, tell him hes injured too much and not producing per his contract so how bout take a little less and stick around? This move gives me even more confidence in TT. Also, locking him down now gives us better cap and needs clarity moving towards draft and Fas. Smart move.

    • Stefanie Smith

You actually think TT told a player that he wants something out of that he is not producing per his contract? Restructuring doesn’t mean he lost a thing. You restructure an existing contract to lower the salary cap hit. You have to wait and see the terms before you jump to conclusions. Framing it as a negative (“you’re not producing”) would not be wise, since simply cutting Royal would not have helped really. He probably got some of his existing deal rolled into a bonus, so they could spread out his deal over a few years. He got an extension most likely.

      • NativeSanDiegan

        Yup. Makes good sense Steph.

  • supersurge619er

Im glad our new g.m. is able to work deals out instead of letting them go uh hum a.j. btw Eddie is one humble dude that loves it here in s.d I hope he can stay healthy this year …go CHARGERS

  • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon
  • boltingindiego

does anyone know what the #’s of the restructure are.

  • arnie

The writing was on the wall. Royal was either going to take pay cut, or get cut. As an veteran WR with injury history, he wasn’t going to get much interest. It’s all starting to fall into place. I expect Clary to follow Royals lead. If i may be as so bold i think this is clearing the way for Stuckey, possibly Ohrnberger.
