Potential Salary Cap Casualties For the Chargers

With free agency just around the corner and some glaring holes, the San Diego Chargers find them self in a slight predicament. $2,863,830 under the cap and couple of players set to be making big bucks this year, which player should be on chopping block?

The first name that comes to my mind and everybody else’s is Jeromey Clary. He is set to make $6,250,000 in 2014. That’s big time money for a player who has not made the Pro Bowl. Clary is 30 years old and last year was his best year, when he was moved to guard. This is a long time coming for the former Wild Cat. Don’t be sad he is good enough to start somewhere else, lets punch in his walking papers.

Fullback Le’Ron McClain did his part in creating lanes for Mathews but the bulk of our yards came from shotgun formation. Seems like the fullback position is dyeing out. Mr McClain is due to bring in $3,333,334 in 2014. That’s too much for a player who doesn’t play half the time. Lets give McClain his walking papers.

Next up Eddie Royal. I have been seeing his name pop up and $6,000,000 to a consistently injury prone player is no bueno. Tom Telesco said “he wants speed” and Royal has proven while injured he can still mange to get separation from defenders. Let’s walk with Royal while holding his walking papers.

These are the three players that are set to make some big dough this year. Let’s do some calculations and see if we can get our cap up, as you know we still need to sign Donald Butler….Richard Marshall….Chad Rinehart and Darrell Stuckey..

AJ did us no favors with his desperate attempt to save his unability to be a GM let alone find talent. I kinda think we should just kinda trade all of our picks and stock pile them so we can get away from the Gaither signing and some of the other players.

  • Stefanie Smith

And lest we forget, the Chargers’ jewel, Derek Cox. He is getting paid a bundle if he is on the roster. Shouldn’t be paying that if he is sitting on the bench. And yes, we are talking about letting Butler go and paying Clary and Royal all that? Not right.

    • CALiFORNiAkiD

      Perfectly said.

    • lilHurricane

If we did release cox will take a cap hit. Just got to ride that one out for another year.

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

you can release him retro to a certain date and the dead money would get split between this year and next year… if they wanted to do that. would save some cash. they did the same with gaither and meachem last season .

        • lilHurricane

Yes if you do it before June 1 you take the hit this year. after June take the hit next year.

  • Stefanie Smith

    And great article, Alex.

  • pachanga

what about seyi? he has good chemistry with philip and has proven to be a good special team player i like this guy

    • Stefanie Smith

Me too, pachanga. Ajirotutu and Rivers always had some good stuff going on. I hope he gets more of an opportunity and stays.

      • pachanga

I think seyi can put more numbers than V. Brown

  • Sergio Quintero

The beat writers for the UT have basically guaranteed that Cox is getting cut, good test for their future credibility to see if that happens.

Other guys that have to be possibilities: Whitehurst, J.Johnson, J.Mouton, L.English.

Could get asked to paycut: Gates, Freeney, Hardwick, V.Brown. In the case of Gates if he wants to play past 2014 for the chargers it would benefit he take a paycut.

    Possible Reestructures: Rivers, Weddle.

    • gpack17

whitehurt, english, and i think mouton are all free agents..johnson i believe is the only one that will be under contract and has been huge in the run defense and has played well for us..no way any of those guys take paycuts..but clary and mcclain likely are gone

      • Sergio Quintero

Not trying to be combative or contrarian here goes:

Larry English: Hasn’t accumulated enough snaps to apply his nullification of his last year of his contract. More:

        http://espn.go.com/blog/san-diego-chargers/post/_/id/3616/on-why-larry-english-remains-a-charger

Charlie Whitehurst: you are correct sir, he’s a free agent

Jonas Mouton: Is entering his 4th an final year of his rookie contract, his salary is just under 985 k, and would account for cap saving of: 766 K

Jarrett Johnson: Actual salary 5.5 million, saving if cut 2.5 million.

        • arnie

If they can find someone to replace JJ’s production i can see his cut. I think it’s more than likely he’s here for his final year. As for Freeney more like a cut than asked to re-negotiate. Mouton an English were bodies under contract to fill the roster, likely cut as well.

  • Stefanie Smith

Alex: You are the Bolt Beat talent scout. Who do you see out there in the draft that is in the top 5 for WR? I am trying to recall this guy’s name and cannot think of it. He is sort of built like VJax or maybe even Calvin Johnson. Taller than everyone else and seemed to have something going on at the Combine.

    • charged up

I know you didnt ask me but kelvin benjamin?

      • Stefanie Smith

Maybe that is the name. I just saw this huge guy at the Combine, in the position of WR and was built like either VJax or Calvin Johnson. He looked talented for sure.

    • lilHurricane

I am lol I don’t see us drafting a WR until the 4th and up. The guy you talking about is 6″6 right?

      • Stefanie Smith

Yes, that is about right. And I think Pete has the name. And yeah, you are the talent scout. You said you scout the talent for your mock drafts. So now, you are the Bolt Beat talent scout!

    • gpack17

Would love to get martavious bryant out of clemson with a 3rd round pick if available…or brandon coleman in the 4th round…bryant is 6’4 big bodied receiver who has been a little overshadowed by watkins and hopkins…coleman was a 6’5 stud at rutgers and can run

    • Sergio Quintero

For 3rd round WR my order:
Paul Richardson Colorado: Had 1350 yards in the Pac 12 last season, is 6’0 and ran 4.35, negative is only 175 lbs.

Donte Moncrief Ole Miss: Had over 800 yards in the SEC which was less than his 1100 yards of 2012, is 6’3 220 lbs at 4.4 speed, is said to be quite raw and a little on the inconsistent side.

Martavius Bryant: Top 10 talent as an athlete, very raw as a route runner and scouts mention mediocre to below average hands. But 6’4 230 lbs WR with sub 4.4 speed are very rare.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

The guy they kept comparing to VJax at the combine is Evans.. he would be AWESOME to have, but I don’t see him falling to us. He’s the #3 WR in the draft. They actually said he was going to be practicing with VJax in San Diego this offseason.

  • lilHurricane

With release of Clary, mcclain and Eddie we will be 14 and half million under the cap.

The release of clary and McClain we will have close to 10 million in cap.

If Rivers and Weddle will restructure their contract like they said they would, then we should keep Eddie.

Clary and McClain has to go.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

      Agree… C-Ya!

  • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

Here’s more dead weight…Mouton, English, ClipBoard Jesus, Freeney…. All can be replaced via draft…he’ll add Cam in there too…Youth & Speed Movement Engaged….

    • slickerytrickery

      Clipboard Jesus haha..classic

    • arnie

THIS^ Clary was actually productive even if overpriced. So was Royal. In this group you could afford to keep Royal and Clary. Even re-neogociate his deal.

      • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

Productive bro, but overpaid….would love it if they got someone, anyone that’s possibly younger, better, and the right price

  • Derek

Breaking news!!! The butler is here to stay!!!!!

  • arnie

No. there are plenty of other cuts on this roster, that two of the players you mentioned.
Clary, while over priced, was still productive in his best year as a Charger. Despite al the biased people my feel towards him. He played better under a new HC and GM. And despite how horrible of guard people may think he is, Clary outplayed everyone in camp to be the starter. I expect him to be asked to re-negotiate his deal.
    McClain? gone.
Royal played out of his mind in camp and early in the season, he proved to be the best option “when healthy”, and earned his money. However paying $6 mil for a player that may not be there for more than 8-10 games for you, seems a bit high. (thanks aj) i agree he will probably be gone. The only reason for keeping him, taking a pay cut. I think the Chargers find other options for half of what he makes to fill two spots.
Mouton, English, Freeney, are three names that can walk.

    Nice read Alex
