Donald Butler Wants Dannell Ellerbe Type Money?

The San Diego Chargers are still working on getting Donald Butler locked into a lightning bolts jersey for the next few seasons, but there is a lot of negotiating that has to take place. According to David Canter (Eric Weddle’s agent), Butler is looking for Dannell Ellerbe type of money.

Ellerbe was a free agent last season and signed with the Miami Dolphins at around $7 million per season. He got 5 years on that deal. That is Sean Lee type of money. Derrick Johnson type money. Johnson has been to the Pro Bowl 3 times now.

That is a big financial commitment that the Chargers would have to put toward Donald Butler. Will the team be willing to put that money toward him. If they have to move in a different direction, what are we going to do in order to fill that hole?

The defense is much better with Donald Butler playing in the game. Can we keep him playing in San Diego? Will we be looking for that hometown discount?

Make it happen now what are we gonna say if he goes oh we should of kept Butler now we have a huge hole to fill again.. make it happen

  • Bolt up!

Dqwell Jackson from browns got released today :))

    • Julien Bélair

sign him up! for 4 years !!

      • Gunnar Martin

        4-3 MLB?

  • Brett M

Damn- I think the writings on the wall. Probably going to have to get someone on open market. Think D’Qwell will
be looking for the same kind of cash?

    • Ernie Padaon

he was already making that type of dough with the Browns. might be a little less though .

      • MachoMenos

D’Quell hasn’t been the same player since moved to a 3-4 defense. Why get D’quell unless we are moving to a 4-3. Let’s see how well Telesco can do in negotiations with Butler. Butler is a beast…when healthy. Tom has to take into consideration that Butler has missed a lot of games due to injury. I personally think Butler will return to form this year but Telesco has to look at the overall picture. Hopefully, they can get a deal done cause after C.J. Moseley is gone ILB is not a strong position this year.

    • Julien Bélair

he is better than Butler but older. I would love to sign for 4 years.

      Bye Butler

  • Cgoodness13

Well bye bye butler then :/ nobody will sign him and his injuries for that much

  • Trey P

Ellerbe wasmt even worth that much
Now we can complain about pro bowlers leavimg like Jackson, Tolbert and Sproles. But butler is No pro bowler he made a good play in Cincy and that Int against manning vut other than that hes not worth 7 mill…Sean Lee Derrick Johnson.. Would easily be the best players on our D is Butler No!!!!!

Say what you want but if Dannell Ellerbe is worth 35M so is Donald Butler.
Eric Weddle got payed 40M without ANY Pro Bowls….So lets kill that argument.

I do think Butler takes the hometown discount and brings that number down.
We have to get him signed.

    • JoseSD

Eric weddle didn’t have any pro bowls but he was regarded as one of the top 5 players at his position, something that can’t be said about butler. And weddle had not missed any games. Butler on the other hand has missed about 35-40% of the games in his career. He’s the best MLB on the team which isn’t saying much, but I don’t think he has earned Ellerbe money, who by the way I think ellerbe is overpaid but that’s what happens in free agency, you have to overpay to get who you want. Let’s just hope he does like weddle after getting paid big money, plays his best season yet and makes multiple pro bowls

      • CALiFORNiAkiD

You’re missing the point. The point was that because Donald Butler hasn’t made a Pro Bowl that he somehow isn’t a good player and shouldn’t get paid.

Butler is already regarded as a Top 10 ILB he can only get better and is still young.

The comments on here might say otherwise, but he is a very good investment.

        • JoseSD

no, i did get your point that zero pro bowls doesnt mean he’s not a good player, the pro bowl is just a popularity contest anyway. what MY point was with you saying Weddle got paid without a pro bowl, but Weddle had a spotless health record and status as a top Free Safety in the league, one of the best. i liike butler but you saying he’s regarded as a Top 10 LB already is just something i dont agree with. he’s not a top 10 ilb yet not with Kuechly, Willis, Bowman. Derrick Johnson, D’qwell jackson, Cushing, Angerer, sean lee, london fletcher, Burfict, beason, and a few others. id say he’s on the cusp of being great kind of like Lavonte David, Bobby Wagner, deandre Levy . he’s improving and deserves to stay here but i dont think he’s worth paying 7 mil a year especially with the small cap room the team has. id rather he stay but his price has to come down

          • CALiFORNiAkiD

Some much to disagree with, I don’t even know where to start!
Angerer and 40 year old London Fletcher seriously?
Let’s agree to disagree on this one.

      • boltingindiego

i doubt he will ever make a pro bowl with willis, bowman, johnson, burfict, kuechly the ilb/ mlb position is stacked.

    • Why O Why

You have to take into account how many games Butler has missed due to injuries during his time here as a Charger. Believe me, I am a Butler fan. More than 5mil a year with his track record of injuries is a bit hard to swallow and honestly not worth the risk. I don’t believe he has ever played all 16 games in a season. His rookie year he played 0 downs. He has to be realistic. Hopefully he comes down a bit and we can keep him.

  • Nick Mansoor

Oh Donald. Donald, Donald, Donald. 5 mill tops?

    • Lem

Give him what he wants based on (16) games played. On the bench because of the injury that will happen no pay for that game!

  • lilHurricane

If we can’t get him should we switch to a 4-3 D

    • Julien Bélair

      hell yeah

    • Gunnar Martin

      Dreaming is always fun…

  • Stefanie Smith

He wasn’t even making $2 mill. Derek Cox is raking in more. Granted that is a different, but still. Double it and give him something in year 2 of his new deal. Wonder if he would fly with about 3.75 or 4 mill. Ellerbe is due for $6 mill this year. I just checked. However, Butler was underpaid last year. Way underpaid.

    • johnpurcell21

yeah 6m this yr but is due to earn 14m over the first two years fully guaranteed. 40% guarantee on the deal. no way butler takes 4 million from us if there is 15m extra on the open market

    • rod santos

He was deff underpaid last year. i think you hit the nail on the head with the 3.75-4 mil a year though! Sounds about right to me.

  • Julien Bélair

    Not worth it… Bye Butler

  • 619chargers4life

To many injures for that type of money . He’s the miles Austin of LB’s

    • Julien Bélair

      lol better please

    • CALiFORNiAkiD

      No thats Sean Lee

      • Julien Bélair

  • Stefanie Smith

If we can pay Derek Cox a boatload, we should pay Butler better than what he got last year and not just a couple of dollars. TT had no problem with a nice big pile of cash for Cox.

  • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

This is the AJ aftermath that SD will be dealing with for years to come…Donald is great when he’s on the field PERIOD… But not at Ellerbe money…
TT has a plan and I’ll wait it out to see how his art turns out….

  • Gunnar Martin

Let’s take this with a grain of salt people! This is not official, and didn’t even come from his own agent. No offense to Canter, but he doesn’t know this for sure. Just because he “heard” something doesn’t mean it is the written-in-stone truth. Butler deserves a nice paycheck, but I think he will be very willing to listen to whatever the Chargers end up offering him.

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Ellerbe isn’t even worh Ellerbe money lol, If this is true I say peace out. He rated as one of the worst MLB’s in the NFL last season. You are only as good or going to get paid as your last season and he by faaaaaaaaar did not earn any type of raise.

    • Ernie Padaon

      hahahahaha…was thinking the same thing

  • Sergio Quintero

Maybe because of his age and level of play I could justify it, but the history of injuries say not a penny more than 5.5 million per year.

    • Ernie Padaon

that is the number i am hoping for right there. Seems about the right amount

  • johnpurcell21

you have to look at it both ways. with the cap increasing from last yr, butler could be looking for 7m a year but it is less than the % of the cap than ellerbe got last yr. the market will set the price and it only takes one team to make a crazy offer and he is gone. the window to earn money is so small in the nfl, he may only ever get one chance for a big contract.

  • rod santos

justify the error with a right act. Cut cox to gain more money to resign Butler. Make sure you get a good deal, Butler is not worth ellerbe type money. He more deserving of 3.5-4 mil type player at this point in his career with his injury history.

  • Daryl Peek

Sean Lee is more injury prone than Butler. Interesting how we don’t value ours?

  • Rob Base

I say 4.5 to 5 mil a year at most especially with the injury history.

  • Aaron Johnson

Worth it. He is a game changer.

  • Peter Thompson

They need to make it happen. I just bought my Butler jersey this season!!!

    • CALiFORNiAkiD

  • vct

If the team believes he is irreplaceable, then pay him! Salary cap is expected to increased even more to over $130M so make it happen!

  • arnie

At this point it doesn’t matter whether he’s worth it, the bottom line is the Chargers have some cap decisions to make, and 7 mil is out out of the question. Okay context time. If there was better option out there in FA I’d say he can walk. The problem is we already have two aging LB/DE on the squad, with injury issues, on the last year of their deals. Moving forward, Butler has youth on his side, and this team is better with him on it. My take, I do not want to see what his team is like, with Freeney and JJ on the trainers table, an Butler in Jacksonville, Detroit or Houston playing out of his mind.
These are the cards that have been dealt, and I don’t think it’s worth nickel and dimming ONE ILB. If it’s that serious, franchise him or back load his deal until 2015. Why? Gaither, meachum & aj are reason why this is an issue at all.

    • Aaron Johnson

Ill say what you didnt, if you dont pay him you create another need for the Draft and FA

  • John Alton

Its not a matter of should the Chargers pay it, but can they afford it? The cap situation is glaring problem. They have other areas that the draft is not going to address. If they don’t resign him, its not on Telesco. 7 mil is just to much for a player with his injury history.

  • C.Steele

I’d like to keep him. I’d rather keep him at the $5M number everyone is throwing around. However, if we are going to pay him $7M I want it highly tied to playing time and production. With his track record, this should go with out saying. But, the higher his cap number goes the lower the base should be with corresponding hikes tied to playing time and incentives.
Incidentally, I believe (could be wrong) that the franchise tag # is around $10M. We can’t afford to do that with our cap issues!

  • Bolt up!

Well sources are saying its not looking good with butlers contract

  • Alter Ego

Give him a 3-4 million multiple year contract with achievement laden bonuses that could pay him superstar money for superstar performance. Win – Win
