Chargers Think Safety First If Nix Is Not Available?

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

First round picks should be focused on the top three positions of need regardless of what team you are. With Louis Nix mocked to go way earlier then pick 25 in the draft, it leaves us thinking who should we get?

Dee Ford, Jason Verrett or even Gabe Jackson are all possibilities. They all would seem like very good picks. Outside Linebackers are not a need at this point in time, so sorry to Dee Ford. Cornerback are in dire need, but this is a deep draft of corners so let’s wait around for that selection. If we have to we can trade up a couple spots to get that corner we want in the later rounds. Offensive guard might be a tough one, but by the time the NFL Draft comes around we should be able to make some changes and sign couple offensive line help.

So now it brings me to safety  his name is DEONE BUCANNON, standing at 6’1, 215 pounds. Mr Bucannon is a straight beast, 114 total tackles, 5 interceptions as a senior  and 1 INT in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl game. He ran 4.49-second 40, with a bench press of 19 reps.

In the box safety or a deep zone, it doesn’t matter. He is an instant playmaker and run-stuffer. That is something we been missing since… not Kiel… not Hart… but since Ronny Harrison. Go over the middle and he will pop you type safety. Marcus Gilchrist can cover the tight end and let Eric Weddle roam the yard more than he did last year.

Bucannon would be a huge upgrade in the secondary. Those two positions would be good for the next couple of years.

I really like jahleel addaes productivity last year and he was a rookie idk I wouldn’t be mad but I rather see corner or wide receiver come in

  • Sergio Quintero

I asked this question to Michael Gehlken the beat writer of the UT:

    Comment From Sergio from Tijuana

How happy are the chargers with their Safeties, do they like Gilchrist, Addae & Taylor enough not to take a Pryor or Clinton-Dix if they fall to pick 25?

    Michael Gehlken:

I’d be shocked if the Chargers drafted either in that scenario.

Take if with a grain of salt, maybe your trust is not super high on the UT, but last year they said the chargers will probably take OT in the first round and they did. I have a feeling the chargers really like their Safeties, a lot people on this page don’t look at it that way, but I would be really surprised they went with a Safety.

    • gpack17

At the same time everyone knew that OT was the biggest area of concern last season and somehow or another they were going to get one via the draft. I would love to get a safety, however i don’t think bucannaon is worth a 1st. He may be available in rounds 2 or 3 but also keep in mind there are going to be quite a bit of free agent options at the safety position and we have a lot of holes to fill through the draft already.

      • lilHurricane

I have couple free agents in mind

        • gpack17

especially with delmas and decoud getting released there will be more to follow.

          • lilHurricane

TJ Ward and Major Wright can be possibilities.

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Yeah… everyone under the sun knew they were looking to pick a left tackle last season. However, I don’t think anyone saw the Fluker pick coming, including the UT. I would like to pick up a safety, but it’s looking like a second, or third round pick. Also, I don’t think TT will pick one, as he is apparently happy with Addae. Personally, I am not as optimistic as everyone else is about him. Let’s pray he doesn’t get hurt, because he likes to use his body as a “head-first” battering ram. Behind him Gilly was awful, Stucky is not a good option, and Taylor.. well… who knows what the “F” is going on with his status, even if he is healthy heading into the season. I really wish they would at least get a FA. Strong safety was a hot mess last season. I fear that will continue, if SS is not addressed.

    • Julien Bélair

Thx since janurary I have been saying that Addae is the guy. Safety in the first would be the worst thing

  • lilHurricane

Jahleel is more of short zone guy. he had a decent year but we do need an upgrade. we can love players but it comes down how much can they contribute. deone is what we need

    • Julien Bélair

with all our need going into the draft I don’t understand why we would take a safety with the first pick when you have a young player that is getting better and better on your roster

  • Julien Bélair

    Addae is the starting SS.

    • Sergio Quintero

They will mix match with Gilchrist but in simple terms yes.

      • Julien Bélair

Addae will be better than people expect and Gilchrist is our starting nickel now

    • John Alton

I could not agree more. This will put Gilchrist in a Nickel and spot duty at SS and CB.

  • lilHurricane

need to go bigger how I see it. addae will still get PT we play a lot of zone anyways.

  • Sergio Quintero

This is not that I love Addae I think the chargers love Addae, they think he can be an above average SS next year. From reading the UT to the chargers own page, they can’t hide their enthusiasm about Addae.

The simple answer the first few picks will focus on OLB, CB & NT.

    • lilHurricane

agree 100% Addae does things an undrafted player shoulden’t. second round still will have corners, DT, OG, OT, WR, and RB but theirs not alot of big safety’s with Deone talent.

      • Sergio Quintero

Don’t be shocked that Buchanon is available in the 2nd round, most of the “experts” seem to have him behind Clinton-Dix and Pryor.

        • lilHurricane

I really like Stanley Baptiste corner back in the second round might have to trade up to draft him. If we get those two players secondary is straight with addae playing slot zone plays. third we need to address the DT

          • Sergio Quintero

A lot of corners with 2-3 round grades, the key is not to be persistent with only one of them.

Roberson, Purefoy, Jean-Baptiste, McGill, Desir, Roby all have been talked about at around the chargers pick. Be patient several should be there.

          • lilHurricane

if not Jean or Mcgill then EJ Gains

          • Sergio Quintero

Lets say pass rusher in the first, I really like Roberson, McGill & Jean-Baptiste in the 2nd round.

          • Marcel West-Bailey

If you’re picking SJB in the second round, cool but I don’t think McGill is worth a second round pick. He needs work. He’s got potential but not second, maybe not even third round potential.

          • lilHurricane

pass rush with the players we have now?

          • Marcel West-Bailey

Not unless they do PCP before the games and go clinically insane

          • Sergio Quintero

I haven’t read on McGill work ethic basing it mostly on potential, Roberson seems to be a favorite of scouts who like technique over physical skill set.

          • Marcel West-Bailey

There are a few videos on Youtube. Don’t watch highlight videos obviously because they’re are biased but watch the ones where it just shows him playing. Watch the fluidity of the hips, if he gets his head around, recognizing the down and how to play the receiver, things like that. I noticed that he really doesn’t like to tackle. Like he shies away from it. He just looks like he doesn’t want to be there.

          • gpack17

I would say if not Jean Baptiste then Breeland or Desir.. gaines wouldnt be a bad pick either but i am definitely not buying into mcgill..guy looks like he plays lazy..

          • MachoMenos

Gaines will be available late in the draft. Pierre Desir is better than McGill and Jean-Baptiste at this point in there careers. He’s still slower than they are, though.

  • Marcel West-Bailey

I don’t know (not that my opinion matters) if I would draft a safety if it isn’t Calvin Pryor. I watched the Washington State game against Auburn and he’s not bad but I would rather draft someone we absolutely NEED. Addae is good and some people predict he’s going to breakout this year. That and you build a defense from the line back. Not from the back forward. We can’t control the line of scrimmage and that’s where we need to start in the draft if we haven’t in free agency.

    • lilHurricane

your opinion always matters on boltbeat.com we are family here

      • Guest

I bet you say that to everyone

        • lilHurricane

          lol

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

          Yes!!!

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i am with you on this… if it is not pryor… then why would we go that way? I even would take Clinton-Dix over Bucannon in the draft.

If it is not Pryor, I don’t want any part of a safety in the first round.

  • arnie

Here’s the thing. I like this choice and I understand why he makes sense, but the Chargers have two players in the middle coming off of IR, and i don’t see Addae being moved aside. Jahleel is just as productive, but it was his limitation of snaps that kept his effectiveness low.
OL is were i can see the Charger at 25. Why? Hardwick isn’t getting younger, the cap is tight for FA and they have options, so they don’t need a C/G to start right now. The class of OL is good, but not as plentiful as DB’s.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

If Zach Martin was there, would you take him Arnie? Seems like he can play any position on the line pretty well. You know how TT likes his versatility.

  • Cgoodness13

I’d like to see how Addae develops, but a star SS is something long overdue. I’m pretty sure Addae is going to be a very good gunner on SP Teams in the future

  • John Alton

We all see what we think is the #1-3 top priorities, but what does Telesco and McCoy see as the teams top 3 in the draft? If the players they like are not there, do they go in a different direction or do they take the next best thing? Do they draft a player they don’t like just to fill a void(I doubt that) or move to next position of need or the best player on the board regardless of primary needs? Do they eliminate a need through FA? Right now, its all is based on assumption and guess work. Its fun to ponder and read all of the temper tantrums when all is said and done. These questions will be answered soon enough.

    • ECAVILLE/Ace of Spades

Telesco/McCoy have a plan that most people are not able to pinpoint but I believe you are right about them picking players at positions of need only if its the player they wanted. Best available is the style that best fits Telesco. I like the way they evaluate football knowledge, attitude, and character, not only physical atributes. This is a deep draft class tailored specifically to The Bolts needs. Even at middle linebacker although I would like to keep Butler. Either way The CHARGERS will be just better than fine. SUPER BOLTS!!!

  • serg21

    Marquise lee marquise lee!!

  • lilHurricane

Allen Robinson if I was to pick WR

    • Julien Bélair

in the second and I even like Mattews and Moncrief more right now

  • TheTrueBlu

Deone Buchanan is a straight up stud. He will do whatever it takes to help a team win

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Seriously… I would love to have him in our backfield.

  • Kenny Redman

    It’s Rodney Harrison.

  • Trey P

Chargers will not Draft a saftey Early Guaranteed!!! YOU HAVE TO SHORE UP THE FRONT BE FOR YOU GET THE BACK. Im tired of safety talk…

  • Bolthead17

Addae is no Star, Pryor will be

    • Gunnar Martin

Pryor is no star, Addae will be

      BOOM.

      • Bolthead17

Addae barely took the starting job from Gilly, if he is what we are looking at as a cornerstone on our defense then R.I.P to the secondary again!
        BOOM

        • Gunnar Martin

Dude, it was a joke. You couldn’t tell that it was a joke? (And that was not good enough to BOOM me back. You gotta have a sweet comeback to do that.)

  • Rod Santos

    RD 1 Bradley Roby CB
    RD 2 Gabe Jackson OG
    RD 3 Allen Robinson WR
    RD 4 Jerimiah Attouchu OLB
    RD 5 DAT WR/RB
    RD 6 Jordan Tripp MLB
    RD 7 Aaron Colvin CB

We don’t need Deone Buccannon if we don’t need Dee Ford.

  • RZ

Addae is our SAFETY…they probably go Corner if they sign a NT in FA.

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Just a heads up for anyone who thinks “TT couldn’t have known that Cox would be this bad”. Ummmmm…. not so much. Love me some TT, but he should have had at least SOME idea that Cox might not be the best choice. Check this out… Just sayin ; )

I disagree about not needing an OLB ( I also wouldn’t go safety with the 1st pick). Jarrett Johnson is not an accomplished pass rusher, though he is great against the run. Dwight Freeney is still rehabbing from injury and may even be a salary cap cut. Ingram has not established himself as an elite pass rusher yet, and even if he does (which I hope), two pass rushers is better than one. That helps the secondary more than a rookie CB or Safety.

So my vote is for Dee Ford (then go CB…or DB…in the 2nd or 3rd round and go after a veteran CB like Sam Shields in Free Agency). That said, the team has enough holes that pretty much any position group besides QB and maybe TE could stand to be upgraded with that 1st pick.
