Nick Hardwick’s Return A Huge Sigh of Relief

Nick Hardwick’s news of his return for the 2014 season has to be a huge sigh of relief to Philip Rivers and other players on the roster. The offensive line will definitely enjoy his presence on the line for another season. Hardwick is the anchor on the offensive line and is a leader. His presence will be needed in the huddle.

With Hardwick back for another season, the team can scratch that off as a priority in the draft and offseason. The team still look to develop someone for the position for the future, but they won’t be looking to plug someone in immediately up front. The offensive line will have their bookends and the man in the middle back for next season. We have to find out what happens at both guard positions. Will the team draft someone to take over one position? Will they put their trust in the younger Johnnie Troutman? Will they keep Jeromey Clary around?

Whoever is at the guard position, we know who will be leading the wan in the middle. It will be nice to see those tattooed sleeves snapping the ball off to Philip Rivers for at least one more year.

I say we grab a guard/center no higher than fourth. Aj was good st finding those gems. Dono if molk would have been the one but philly snagged him for a reason

    • Julien Bélair

If we resign ohnberger he could be our next C don’t you think?

      • Derek

Yeah did a good job, but age and durability concern me. He can be a stop gap while we develop a late pick

  • rickochey

Its great to see him comeback.. Are we still under the Gaither contract?

    • Sergio Quintero

They are still carrying dead money from Gaither that counts on the cap this year

    • boltingindiego

i think gaithers contract is still with us for 2 more years.

  • Sergio Quintero

Early results on the combine is moving guys I like one round earlier than I would like them. I thought Beckham might make to 2nd round no way with the 4.31 he ran, and Cooks might not even make to the 2nd round with a 4.30 and it looks virtually impossible he makes to the 3rd round like I had him in my early mock.

    • Gunnar Martin

I had them both in the first round before anyways, but I had no idea Beckham could run THAT fast. It will be interesting to see how high the receivers are picked, and what order. I personally think Kelvin Benjamin should fall to the second, while Watkins, Evans, Lee, and Beckham/Cooks (the loser out of them goes high second) go in the first. That number of WRs is downright insane. 4 or more in the first round? Sheesh.

      • Sergio Quintero

Cooks & Benjamin probably go before pick 45, so that means it doesn’t look good for pick 57, the chargers need a speed compliment WR to Allen but those take the top of the defense guys come expensive even in a deep draft.

        • Gunnar Martin

Oh and I forgot about Allen Robinson. There’s a decent chance one of them drops to us in the second. Only so many teams are going to want a WR.

          • Sergio Quintero

Jordan Mathews made himself a boatload of money, the SEC’s all time receiver, at 6’3 212 lbs, who supposedly was a possesion receiver, ran 4.4′s plus has bloodlines to Jerry Rice. That sure sounds like a 1st round pick.

          • Julien Bélair

Moncrief stands out too. Speed too notch and seems smooth in all drills. Mid second is a good spot for him

          • Sergio Quintero

Paul Richardson who put major stats in Colorado is right there with Moncreif for a possible 2-3 round investment.

          • Julien Bélair

You are right. There is a lot of good wide

      • Julien Bélair

Totally agree. I would love Beckman in the first he is so smooth

        • Sergio Quintero

I want defense because there is a need for difference makers on this roster, but Beckham, Mathews you can make a damn good argument for either at pick 25.

          • Julien Bélair

To be honest I think wr is more a crying need than CB at the moment. Because we have nobody exept Allen…

          • Sergio Quintero

Both positions look similar to me, one young ascending starter, major questions on both. CB is slightly ahead because Rivers can make WR’s look better and carry them. But both positions will get players drafted before 3rd round is over.

          • Julien Bélair

            Totally agree

  • Gunnar Martin

I hope Rinehart comes back, Clary gets let go, and Troutman gets a better opportunity to start and get experience. Hopefully we also re-sign Ohrnburger and maybe draft a guard/center. This draft class is pretty good for O-linemen.

    • Sergio Quintero

Rinehart & Ohrnberger are a major must sign, I expect Clary not to be here is contract is completely out of whack, so he either has to take a major pay cut or pack his bags. We don’t know how any player will react when asked to take a cut.

      • Julien Bélair

Yes they are major sign but I think we will be able to resign both. If not coach D will be able to work a new O-line next year I am not scared at all

    • chargerfan#21

Troutman is a beast as LG but when RG he is trash so he’s better off as Right Guard

      • Gunnar Martin

You mean left guard right? Haha

        • julian vesga is chargerfan#21

          Yeah lol

  • Nick Mansoor

Well no matter what happens, we still need to look for a center for the future. As well as someone to replace Clary, that guy is a money sucker and he is just an average player. I’m sure TT will figure something out.

  • chargerfan#21

Haha clinton-dix is a funny name a college safety

    • chargerfan#21

      I heard he is talented

    • Sergio Quintero

His name is HaSean, his nickname is Ha-Ha, really interesting SS.

      • chargerfan#21

        How about captain munnerlyn

        • Sergio Quintero

How about Courtland Finnegan the Rams are going to release him, draft a corner in round 1 or 2, and have him sit behind Finnegan for 2 years, and make a championship push, with a feisty very productive player.

          • arnie

Finnegan best asset is his mouth. He’s physical, but gets burnt.

          • Sergio Quintero

I don’t even know if the chargers have enough cap room for say a Corey Graham, I mention Finnegan because he’s still above average, and because of his age shouldn’t come too expensively.

The chargers should look for starters at CB & NT in free agency, not star players.

  • Julien Bélair

Hey guys what about trading up in the top ten and get Khalil Mack? (just some offseason talk)

    • Sergio Quintero

Deep draft means you want to keep your picks, and the chargers have a lot of holes in particular on defense, but if you would trade up for someone Mack is my guy. I doubt the chargers go in that direction.

      • Julien Bélair

I know it is unlikely by I don’t think I would be mad. It would solve our pass rush problem for years with Ingram/Mack tandem. Our CB will also be better. Maybe it is worth it

        • Sergio Quintero

Not against it, would have to drop to about pick 10-15 for it not to be too expensive, with Mayock showering major love his way, seems very unlikely.

  • Sergio Quintero

How many of you guys would take Marqise Lee at 25, he was supposedly the best player in college football 2012, 118 catches and 1721 yards, plus he averaged over 26 yards per kickoff return for his career. His slightly bad day in the 40 might push him down to the chargers pick.

    • Julien Bélair

Right now here is my wr list
      watkins
      evans
      beckam
      Mathews
      Lee
      cooks
Lee range for me is 18-28

      • Sergio Quintero

Watkins & Evans long gone by 25, the next 3 depends on the taste of teams but one easily will make it to the chargers pick, and will be better value than 3rd corner and very similar in value to Ealy and Ford as pass rushers.

        • Julien Bélair

Yep I have been saying for a month and a half now that the Chargers will draft a WR if the right guy is there. After the Wr combine I see more a more Lee mathews or Beckam being the pick there.

For the record I rank Benjamin after Cooks. I think he has size but he is very raw in terms of route running

      • chargerfan#21

        Benjamin????

        • Julien Bélair

after cooks I think he has size but he is very raw in terms of route running.

          • chargerfan#21

He can jump ball he is 6″5 not sure if Benjamin is fast is he

          • Julien Bélair

4.61 40 yard dash. nothing impressive

          • chargerfan#21

            Slow

        • Sergio Quintero

He would bring something very similar than Allen, plus he’s really raw, the chargers need a WR to penalize the defense for stacking the box, a speed WR.

      • julian vesga is chargerfan#21

Sometimes, I’m saying sometimes it’s risky taking a wide receiver in the first round remember “THE BUST”
        AKA:Craig “Buster” Davis!!!!!!

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      i definitely would!

  • arnie

I know I’m rehashing here, But the Chargers have options at OG. Having Hardwick back only give them an opportunity to get a Center, that has experience playing OG. And there are some Good options that the Chargers will be able to get in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

    • Gunnar Martin

I like Marcus Martin the most. Has experience at guard, could develop to be a much better center. Don’t know if we could get him in the third or fourth or if we would be forced to take him in the second. His stock is kind of up in the air at the moment.
