Top Corner Prospects in the Draft

Take a look at the mock drafts and you will see the San Diego Chargers selecting corners. That is the biggest position of need for the team in the eyes of the mock drafters. It is no secret that we need corners. We need help out there and we are going to pick someone up in the draft. We could pick one up at any point in the draft though, but we will look at some of the first round prospects first. .

Let’s look at the top 3 corners in the draft: Darqueze Dennard, Justin Gilbert and Jason Verrett. Any of the 3 corners would be a huge upgrade for the team and all 3 of the guys are very talented. There still is a ton of debate on where these guys will land in the draft and all of them have the possibility of falling to the Chargers. The combine might have some of these guys move up and down some draft boards. The Chargers would be doing good if they got any of these 3 guys.

All three of them are strong cover corners and would be great playing opposite of Shareece Wright.

Dennard is the top rated corner in the draft right now. If he falls to us in the draft, we would get a tough corner that will play physical and will be solid at getting up in people’s face and making plays on the football. If he is available when we select, it would be tough to pass up on him..

Justin Gilbert is the biggest of the three and can help return kicks. He is a solid return specialist and we need one of those on our roster. He looks the part as a corner. He has the size to battle the receivers and will get a lot of attention because of the success of the Seahawks and their big corner.

Jason Verrett is the smallest of the 3 corners, but he can shut down receivers. He doesn’t get a lot of recognition coming from Texas Christian, plus he is smaller. He is a solid talent though and can get the job done.

The Chargers would be fine taking any of the three corners. We would just have to see who is available when the Chargers go up to draft. Which corner are you hoping gets to the Chargers?

If I had to choose between those 3, than it would be Gilbert. However, I am very fascinated with the Chargers taking Aaron Donald with the 1st and a corner like Kyle fuller in the 2nd or Stanley Jean-Babtiste in the 3rd.

    • Gunnar Martin

If we can get any of those players then I’ll consider our draft a success. Although I’m not sure Donald fits our defense…

    • Derek

Donald’s a 4-3 dt he will need a yr to transition if he is able to

      • Julien Bélair

yeah he is not a guy for us

    • boltingindiego

donalds a 4-3 dt we need a 3-4 nt right now. i wouldn’t want to risk a 1st rounder on a player who would need to to transition to play nt when they’ve never played that position in college too risky.

    • blu3ny3llow

I’m with u on them corners but Donald would be a DE in the 3-4..we need a big boy a NT or an OLB

    • Julien Bélair

SJ-B is the guy I want. It would be awesome. Cut Cox draft Gilbert in the first S J-B in second or third haha

  • Gunnar Martin

Not many other people seem to like him as much as I do because of his injury history, but I would be ecstatic if we took Kyle Fuller from Virginia Tech in the second, maybe third round. I think he’s a future Pro-Bowler in the NFL.

    • Julien Bélair

      calm down haha

  • arnie

The question for me is will any of these players be available at #25? The simple truth is if selected will they be able to contribute NOW? My money is on Telesco taking the best player available. And I don’t think it will be CB.

    • 619chargers4life

      Agreed!

    • Julien Bélair

disagree. if Gilbert is there, he probably is the BPA

      • arnie

That’s fair. disagreeing with me if fine, but to assume we know what Telesco will do, or draft is just opinions. The facts are Telesco is on record for taking whose there. What matters is Who will “he” take.
Gilbert is a nice option, i’m just not going to bet that is the guy Telesco picks, or is even available at #25.

        • Julien Bélair

I didn’t pretend to know what TT will do.You said TT will take bpa and it will not be a corner.but I think Gilbert at 25 could very well be bpa thats all

          • arnie

Understood you the first time. Any discussions here are assumptions. Based on TT tendencies and the way draft plays out, the likely hood of a player you may favor being at #25, TT will see him as the bpa, and select him is very unlikely. The Chargers have options at CB, and i’m sure they will take one in the draft.
When i open my thoughts i usually take into consideration as much information as i can, and express my assumption in context. the one thing i exclude is favoritism in players “I” think TT should take. Telesco is on record, what we think are the bpa doesn’t matter, it’s who he thinks is. That is all.

  • Derek

But there are a few good fa DBS to consider I think Detroit will take one

  • Trey P

I hope they sighn Captain Murlin who is excellent for this.scheme Pagano has the same system as Rivera from the Panthers and draft a corner 2nd round and 3rd.1st round needs to Be either Dt Or offensice tackle or Wr if they do that..

  • blu3ny3llow

For me I’d like 1. Gilbert 2. Verrett or 3. Dennard…but still not big on drafting a CB in the first round….but we’ll see in TT we shall trust

  • MachoMenos

We are not picking a CB with the 1st pick unless someone drops to us. Nose Tackle, nose tackle, nose tackle!

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I don’t see us picking a CB or a NT in the first. TT wouldn’t even pick one last season, and he had friggin Lotuleilei sitting there. There aren’t any NT’s worthy of a first round pick, IMO. And if there are, they will be gone by 25. I see a free agent NT in our future.

      • Gunnar Martin

Other than Nix, is there really another legit NT in the entire draft? And McCullers doesn’t count.

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Negative.. Nix is a beast, but he definitely looks better with the lack of NT depth.

          • Gunnar Martin

That’s what I thought. Yeah, we should definitely try to get our new nose tackle through free agency.

          • Julien Bélair

plus the injury problem… Personally I don’t want tog et into that AGAIN…

        • Julien Bélair

          Why doesn’t he

          • Gunnar Martin

Sorry? Didn’t quite catch what you were asking there…

          • Julien Bélair

            why mccullers doesn’t count?

          • Gunnar Martin

I don’t see him panning out in the NFL. Plus, if we really want a huge monster at NT, then we already have Kwame Geathers on our roster.

          • Julien Bélair

haha they are not the same guy because they are both big… but I get your point

        • tubbs45

I think there are two other real possibilities that could start at some point during the season, possibly even from the get go:
          Beau Allen, Wisconsin
          Ra’Shede Hageman, Minnesota

          • Gunnar Martin

Hageman is an interesting prospect. I think he has a bright future in the NFL. But I think he ends up somewhere else as a 4-3 DT where he can utilize his skills more than nose tackle.

      • Julien Bélair

Draft a WR with the first if Gilbert is gone ! Or (and I hate to say that cause it is not sexy) a OL. There will probably be zach martin sitting there

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

If there isn’t a CB there..it HAS to be a defensive pick. If TT goes offense in the first round we are in major trouble. There would at least have to be a safety, or an OLB there. The way our defense played this season, you need a first round talent in there.quickly. I don’t care if we draft a WR who is Keenan 2.0, it would still be foolish to pick offense in the first this year. I know we aren’t going to agree on this, but that’s my stance on it, and it’s not changing.

          • Julien Bélair

There is a lot of ways to look at our roster and the future of the team. I am a big believer of BPA but the player also has to fill a need. I think if BPA happens to be a Wr then take him but I agree with you that I rather see a defence player being BPA.

But I think by now you already know where I stand on the safety position

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I do know where you stand on safety. I suppose a left tackle would be OK, but only if he is the top one or two. As much as I wish Clary would go away forever, I can’t justify going guard in the first round either.

          • Julien Bélair

I am a big believer in Addae and I think we should give him a chance next year to start at the SS position. He is young, he seams to learn fast he is a great tackler he has positive energie . and he is a great leader. With more experience I think he can be the solution at SS.

I think if we draft a safety in the first round he would have a very hard time to beat Addae for the starting job. We should look elsewhere this year and give Addae a shot. It ill also give Taylor some time to get back on the field.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Let’s not get into Addae again. We’ve already talked about him ad nauseam, and we couldn’t be further apart there. In my opinion, he played well for being undrafted. He’d make a great rotational guy. Not someone I see as the permanent starter though. Maybe we can trade him to the Pats? They LOVE picking up our safeties.

          • Julien Bélair

hahaha stupid pats. But that is why I told you that by now you know where I stand on the SS position. We agree that we disagree on what we should do.

But to be honest I rather wait after the FA to really make my idea on who we should draft. Until then we can rally know

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Agreed. Personally, when it comes to draft picks, I stopped paying attention to what these mock draft experts say a long time ago. If you really want to know where a player should be drafted (whether he gets picked there or not) look at your own team’s scheme, watch some game tape, look at his measurables, and put that information into context. I will take the eyeball test, over where “experts” think they should be drafted any day. Also, I try to put my homerism aside… like picking a player, because they played for SDSU, or something.

          • Julien Bélair

Agreed but it is kind a fun to watch all the mock draft because it’s offseason and we have nothing more to do than talk about that.

With that being said the guy I truly want (at the moment) with our first round pick is : A) Gilbert B) Dee Ford C) a WR if value is there D) damn it nobody is there take BPA even if it’s a DE or OL

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Besides, isn’t Zach Martin like the seventh ranked OL in the draft? If we took him at 25, TT should have his head examined. No offense.

          • Julien Bélair

The ranking will change drastically till the draft. Martin is versatile lineman I don’t know where he will be rank on draft day but I think he is one of the best Guard in this year draft.

          • Julien Bélair

BTW walterfootball have him to the Dolphins (19th) right now

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Walter Football also said “he is too undersized to be a sure-fire first round pick” just about a month ago. Like all mock drafters, they will continue to over-analyze every player, and jump on the bandwagon of guys like Mike Mayock. Every year, the stock of players gets royally screwed up by these “experts”. Keenan is a prime example. If we pick a lineman in the first, it should be Erving, or Lewan, or Matthews, or someone like that (who won’t be there)…. Otherwise… NEXT!

      • tubbs45

I’d be fine with that too. Nose tackle is a huge transition from college to the nfl. it can take some time (and alot of weight lifting) to really become the run stuffer!

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Exactly, Tubbs. Seems like that may be the ONE position we have a good shot at landing a decent player in FA. Not that I’m not down for drafting one, because we need to real soon. Just not sure TT does it this season. I kinda see us getting a top nose tackle, and maybe a top center in the early rounds next season.

          • Gunnar Martin

It scares me to think about what will happen if Hardwick retires this offseason…

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

What would happen is that you would have a new #1 need in the draft, hands down.. unless they are sold on Ohrnberger.. and just get a guy for depth.. which I don’t see TT doing.

          • Gunnar Martin

How about that Richburg guy from Colorado St? I’ve heard a lot of praise around him lately. Do you think we’d be able to get him or someone around that talent level in the second round or later? Or would we have to spend our first rounder?

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Probably not 1st round material.. 2nd it’s where we would have to take him, because of where we pick. Interestingly enough, he plays guard too. Not sure who else is looking for a center either. I would have to see who might nab him in the second before we do. Unless we could trade down into the top of the third, and get an extra pick, and take him there, without losing anything.

          • Gunnar Martin

There’s also Marcus Martin from USC. He’s only played center for a year, but has done really well at it apparently. He’s probably third or fourth round material, but his stock would be much higher if he had played the position all throughout college. Just another name to sort through. Ugh, I really hope Hardwick just stays another season.

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Eh.. seems like a risk, because of his limited experience… my eyes are on the prize.

I like Swanson, but he might be gone by the time we pick in the second. He plays with a mean streak, and Florida called him dirty.. lol. But with Fluke’s leadership, I bet they would be beastly! Can you imagine those two? Plus they said he would be a quick starter in the NFL. That sounds about right. He could plug and play in 2015.. Maybe a trade-down from the first into the second, get an extra pick, select him, and then a CB if nobody is there at 25?

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

            He won’t.

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Gilbert, if I had to pick one. Mainly because TT likes versatility, and he returns kicks.. we need both of those things. But, if he isn’t the BPA, TT probably won’t pick him. I am really pulling for us to get Baptiste. That would be great.. and we still have Stevie Williams coming back. I mean, I know it’s a major position of need, but if we have Wright, Cox, Williams, Baptiste (or other draft CB), Gilchrist, and maybe Marshall or Patrick (I think one of those two stays).. or possibly a free agent CB… that’s a pretty full house already. I think TT might still give Cox a shot at being the starter, so we may see CB addressed in round two or three, unless someone falls, AND they are the BPA.

    • Julien Bélair

If Gilbert is there at 25 he probably is the BPA

  • burt reynolds

Wait till round two! Or three. pierre desir, kyle fuller or someone like that. I hope we get a high charafter guy, with some fire like rivers.chargers need to get the reputation of a tough hard nosed and disciplined defense. That what I’ve been waiting from the chargers. Especially with rivers playing so good they would be unstoppeable. If you look all the leagues best quarterbacks and teams that make it to the super bowl they’ve always had good defenses. The patriots had a great defense when they won three straight. Ben roethlesburger’s always had a good defense besides this year, the ravens, 49ers, giants, etc. The chargers have had good defenses at time but they’ve never been too conistent through the years, and they don’t have the reputation of say the seahawks or what the steelers used to be. If they could get another tough player in the draft like last year a la dj fluker and keenan ( maybe teo soon) that can make big contributions next year can give them that reputation and help us get to a super bowl.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Can I say Burt to you.. Mr. Reynolds?

  • ChargerFan94

I think we should take louis nix or david yankey if these corners are gone by our pick

    • Julien Bélair

I love Nix but at the same time he as problem keeping his weight down and he as an injury historic with his knee….I’m not sure what to think about him. Anyway he should be already gone

  • Will Davis

    VERRETT!!!

    It’s a tie between Dennard/Gilbert for me.

  • C.Steele

I’m fine with where ever TT decides to go with his first pick. He won me over with the fine job he did last year. With that being said, If he does go with a CB, He can’t be 5-10″ and he must be wiling tackler. We drafted a 5’10″ corner last year. We need bigger corners to deal with the likes of the Broncos wide outs.

    • Gunnar Martin

      Agree on all accounts.

  • Bolthead17

I would like TT to grab T.Cody in FA, then pick Calvin Pryor in the first and Jean-Baptiste in the second

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i would love those moves. bring it. pass rusher in the third.
