Chargers Projected Cap Space in Comparison to Rest of NFL

The San Diego Chargers are not in the best spot in terms of salary cap. The team doesn’t have any room going into next season and we are in one of the worst spots in comparison to the rest of the league.

The Chargers are already going to start the year over the cap, even with a few players becoming free agents. The team will have to make some moves in order to get under the cap and do some work in free agency. Tom Telesco will have to work his magic again. A.J. Smith had left us in a bad spot with the wasted money on this roster.

Telesco will have to cut some fat and also re-word some deals in order to put out a solid squad next season. The NFL draft and undrafted free agents will be big for us again this season.

Here is the projected cap outlook for the rest of the league:

Wow we won’t sign any ”names” in FA aren’t we

  • Stefanie Smith

We are still in the “paying off the Jared Gaithers and Meachem” debacle – payment 2.

    • Padraigh Keogh

Agree 100%. And if Cox is released, more dead money. Too many poor signings on high salaries

      • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

Understood, but somebody, anybody, chime in on this…Can Cox be Coached up or not??? Pagano like Whiz was stubborn to the end by sticking with crap that wasn’t working. IF and I say that in a big way these coaches can learn from their past mistakes and adapt their schemes on the fly, they may be on to something….

        • Padraigh Keogh

In all fairness, last year the Jags were the second worst team and we signed one of their CB that they didn’t want back and gave him a trunk load of cash. If this year we get a free agent we want to be a starter we must get a player from a good team who has played good all year long.

          • Julien Bélair

we don’t have the money for that

        • Gunnar Martin

I think I’d be fine with keeping Cox another year, as long as we make him take a massive pay cut. If he agrees to a salary that pays less than 1 mil a year, it would probably be worth it to take the chance and see if more experience/coaching cleans up his act.

      • boltingindiego

the cox dead money is only 1.25 mil. he has a cap this year of 5.5 mil and we would save 4.25 if we cut him.

        • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

See ya! Wright, Williams, Gilchrist, a 2014 draft pick, and cheap FA signing is in our immediate future. MAYBE we can get a good CB out of our UDFA’s this year. Isn’t Cromartie technically still on the practice squad? Thought I saw him listed on the roster still.

          • boltingindiego

he used to be he was promoted to our active roster mid december. depending on the free agents at cb bringing back marshall wouldn’t be a bad option either for more depth.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

            Cromartie is still on there

        • Padraigh Keogh

On cover32.com the dead money is $3.9m. A saving of just $1.65m. Can we afford that big of a hit along with Meacham and Gaithers money?

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

you can spread that over two years if you cut him retro to a certain date.

          • Padraigh Keogh

Do you know if meacham and gaithers money was over one or two years? Can you see them bringing back Royal at $6m next year?I doubt it.

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

both were spread over two years… otherwise we wouldnt be paying for any of their stuff in the coming season. I can’t see us keeping Royal for that much. Need to redo his deal or find a different receiver

          • Padraigh Keogh

Thanks. Don’t get alot of nfl news here in Ireland except for nfl.com and bolt beat . Gotta tune into British tv for games too. Thanks.

          • boltingindiego

in cox contract hes only guaranteed after the 1st year for injury only so he can be cut on the 3rd day of the league year when ever that is. and we would save 4.25 mil.

          • Padraigh Keogh

            Ok. Thanks for that.

  • davacho

it will be fine. deals will get restructured- not worried in the slightest. : )

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

      Me either.

  • Stefanie Smith

TT will come up with something. Restructure Rivers, Weddle, and Gates and probably unload Cox and a couple more. Larry English? I don’t know. But it will be okay, because they have to get under the cap to pay the draft picks. Also, the salary cap may go up a little. Remember a couple years back when they said the salary cap would go up based on the new revenue sharing or something like that?

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

some guys are going to get cut. have to make some room… clary likely will be gone. he makes too much money.

      • vct

        Plus royal?

        • Julien Bélair

I would love Royal back to be honest. we only have him and keenan at wr…
I hope they make it work.

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Wow that is not much lol, I can see Alot of cuts coming up to free up that much needed FA dough.

    • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

at least are rookies will all be high picks and small contracts, cutting Clary alone would pay for most of the the 2014 rookie salaries.

      • Julien Bélair

I think we do to have the choice to cut clary. It is the most obvious cut way more than cox

  • Stefanie Smith

I think Hardwick is thinking of retiring. That would be $4.4 mill in cap savings. I think I read somewhere that there is a strong possibility that Freeney is gone also. I hope not, but ya never know.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

malcom might come off the books…. still up in the air if freeney will be healthy enough to return

      • Julien Bélair

Freeney made it clear a few days ago that he wants to come back

    • Gunnar Martin

I don’t know, Freeney seems pretty confident that he’ll be back next year. The question is how we handle the center situation if Hardwick hangs it up. Draft one early? Sign one of the better but more expensive ones in FA? I’m just hoping he decides to stay for one more season.

    • Julien Bélair

but one more roster spot to fill

  • boltingindiego

try to restructure rivers, weddle, gates, clary, and royal. cut cox

  • vct

    Wow jerry Jones! Lol.

  • ECAVILLE/Ace of Spades

I am not worried at all. Telesco and McCoy have a crystal clear vision for what they are doing. This team will be even more impressive than the Seacocks model. A late round running back could add thunder to the lightning (Devonte Freeman). So many great lineman coming in through the draft along with defensive players who would fit in great with this coaching staff. Pagano has already learned to mix up his schemes. Chargers have a identity. It’s Chargers Football, hard nosed grinding, team work, next man up! Frank Reich just might propell the offense into a never count us out mode that will translate into wins. I’m feeling optimistic and happy to have a well put together TEAM coming together like Voltron! BOLTASTIC!

    • Julien Bélair

What about hyde in the second

      • boltingindiego

we have too many needs on D to get a rb in the 2nd.

      • ECAVILLE/Ace of Spades

Early rounds should be defense oriented. Freeman would be a steal in the 5th round. He just fits. Hyde is a beast though.

        • Julien Bélair

and he fits our running style

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

I like Hyde, but would want a defensive talent around there. Still think there will be plenty of talent around that pick

        • Julien Bélair

I know I want as much defence as we can in this draft especially early but if they decide to draft the RB of the future I would not be mad
