Titans Hire Chargers TE Coach Jason Michael

Former San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt was able to take one coach from the Chargers. Today, the Tennessee Titans have hired on former Chargers TE Coach Jason Michael to become their offensive coordinator. Michael had interviewed with the Titans after the Chargers have granted him permission to interview for the position. He worked with Whisenhunt on the sideline this season and had gained enough respect from him to get the opportunity to be an offensive coordinator in the league.

The Chargers will have to fill that vacancy now. They will have to find a QB Coach and a TE Coach on their coaching staff now.

Michael had become the Tight Ends Coach for the Chargers after Rob Chudzinski left town to become the offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers with Ron Rivera. Chudzinski was just recently fired from the Cleveland Browns after becoming their head coach for one season. He could fill in to be a nice tight ends coach with the Chargers again.

whats up with Gary Kubiak? With his stroke he might be willing to take a relaxes position as OC. Do you know anything?

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

we have frank reich as our OC. Kubiak doesnt really fit… unless he wants to be a QB coach or TE coach

      • Derek

Plus from what I hear he’s very rigid and uncompromising “there’s only one way to do everything” doesn’t fit with McCoys “find what players are good at and put them in that situation as much as possible”

        • Stefanie Smith

He became too predictable. Every other team in the NFL knew what he was going to call. And he makes Whisenhunt look radical.. Kubiak is not creative in the least.

Personally, as I read about these other coaches and guys getting canned, I think this “conservative” streak you often see, is a smoke screen for, “Hey, I don’t know what I am doing, and this is all I know and yeah, I pretty much stink.” It’s not like that all the time, but often.

Think about the really great coaches, maybe Bill B. He is installing new wrinkles in his game plan every week, not the same stinking thing. Teams don’t know what the good coaches are going to come up with., Granted, each team has an identity, i.e. run game, strong defense, etc, but they have the football knowledge and ingenuity to think up something new for the opponents they face.

Conservative play calling = I am full of crap and have no clue what I am doing. Norv was the same stinking way,

I think from what I’ve seen Johnny pags has tried to do the same with our players. As we saw he was able to do more when our roster improved. I think that’s why bill josh and Brady work so well together. Josh can get creative with the playbook and how he uses the h back and te’s. Brady can get the ball wherever it needs to be and bill takes the defense and gets as creative as josh with the lbs. when I look at the pats I see an entire team that is as balanced as can be. There are plays for the wr, TE, hb, qb. Same on defense. He will throw his lbs in man coverage or his linemen in zone just to make you respect all 11 of his players. There are no superstars on the pats. That’s something that’s true in sd too now we just need to drop some of the liabilities

I don’t think I mentioned him as an OC for the Chargers. i asked, “Whats up with Gary Kubiak. Do you know anything?”

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

oh… havent heard anything on him. his name is being mentioned for some OC positions, but not sure if he will get anything right now.

    • Lee

      We already have an oc

      • Nick in PB

Rickochey… the Texans hired our tight ends coach to be the OC. I don’t know what’s up with Kubiak. He’s likely going to take the year off like many fired coaches do. Andy Reid was the exception. With his failures and having a top rated team, I doubt he’s going to get any HC position. Maybe Cleveland where they can’t seem to find anyone that will take it.

  • Cgoodness13

Congrats to him, he’s earned it.

  • PakMaN

    Fuck you Whisencunt!

    • FitzWilly

      Nice PM
      best one yet :)

  • Rob Base

I wonder who’s on McCoys radar?

  • 619chargers4life

I wonder if he would have to give a two notice ? Lol

  • arnie

Okay, my two cents. Should I really be mad at Whiz for taking away a staff member from the Chargers? Or should I be thanking Whiz, he took a leftover from norv turners regime, who did’t seem to impress me as the TE coach? Specifically the inability to correct the “ball security” of Gates in practice? Aside from the sporadic great play here an there, what type of spectacular play did we get from the TE unit?
For me, I see a pattern. This guy was with the TE group for 2 seasons. Gates has gotten worse, and Green is just NOW emerging as talent?
    Yeah i’m gonna say……thanks Whiz.

    • Derek

Think ur going a lil too far, gates doesn’t have a fumbling problem just had a bad day. LeMOREious I blame on norv, remember how Melvin and shereece along with damn there everyone we drafted never saw the field their rookie yr. sparingly their sophomore yr. I don’t think it is that big of a deal who we get as a TE coach because we have gates I’m certain that’s who has the biggest influence on his development. I think we need to spring for a new d line coach like the cowboys guy or the texans guy. I kinda put rivers in the same catergory as Peyton, whoever becomes his qb coach will just be a guy making suggestions or provide ideas that phill can implement or not. Maybe we could hire CBj!!!!

      • arnie

I never said Gates had a fumbling problem. Just stated a my point, the TE crew wasn’t that impressive this year. So losing the TE coach was no loss at all.

  • JoseSD

I know this has nothing to do with the story but you think we can start referring to Kellen Winslow JR as Kel, or something other than Kellen Winslow. That guy is an embarassment and disgrace to his father’s name. He has all his dad’s physical gifts as a TE but is too busy being a jackass to live up to his father’s legacy. First the whole “im a soldier! ” at The U, then he messes up his rookie year crashing a motorcycle in a parking lot and now he was caught jerking off in a target parking lot. What a disgrace

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      he is embarrassing.

  • Stefanie Smith

There is nothing to thank Whisenhunt for – now crowned the Chargers’ past Assistant Coach and Assistant Coach of the year.

  • Bill Nichols

Gates can coach Green. Save our money. Lol. Kidding of course, sort of. But I do envision Gates becoming a bolts coach someday.

  • Bill Nichols

And love the Whisencunt moniker. Good one.
